Just finished Son of Zorn and am kind of annoyed we won’t be getting any more of it

I’ll just get right into it. Son of Zorn isn’t anything phenomenal, but it was fun. It also seems to have failed for two reasons:

- It aired on Sundays

- It wasn’t really shooting for any Emmys

I can understand why FOX would want to put a show with any 2-D animation at all on their Sunday adult animation block, but this wasn’t an animated comedy. I think the people who still watch the Sunday block (which in itself isn’t what it once was) were aware of that too. 

It had a lot more heart than a conventional animated comedy too, taking more from the live-action family sitcom (which it really was) than the animated stuff which tends to rely on shock value and feature a whole cast of degenerate characters that never seem to grow, unlike Zorn who actually has some character development in the season.

The other issue is that we all want everything we watch to blow us away. That’s a horrible mind set to have, as it makes amazing less special. I intentionally watch silly, simple shows and read silly, simple comics more than half the time, so that the extra good stuff hits harder, but that’s not how most people consume media now, and it still wasn’t how most people consumed media in 2016 when Son of Zorn aired.

Viewers, readers, players: they all want something they’ve never seen before, that will surprise them enough to keep them enthralled. With so many shows on and off cable that are worthy of an Emmy, people don’t have time to watch entertainment that only wants to entertain, and that’s sad.

Son of Zorn is the type of show that would have found a cult following in the early 2000′s, but there’s too much TV now to try to save one of the fallen. Instead, those who enjoyed its run can hope that the creators cared about the idea enough to give it another shot, albeit with enough names and situations altered so that the networks don’t realize they’re trying to pitch them a similar show.

It may end up perfectly fine, but this new design for Lunella in the Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur cartoon rubs me the wrong way.

You’ve got a little girl who wore frumpy clothes and was a pretty innocent soul in the comics wearing a weird leather outfit and displaying a lot more of a “fuck you” attitude than she did in the comics.

Like I said, it may end up totally fine, but it seems just as likely that this series is going to undo a lot of what the comic built up.

Craft beer is over: it’s the mixologist’s time to rise

I’ll preface this post by saying I have no background in mixology. I have no idea how the hard liquor wizards of the big city make the God’s nectar and/or elixir that I semi-regularly throw back slow enough to enjoy but quick enough to catch a buzz. I just know there’s nothing quite like it.

Craft beer is cool, but its more subtle flavor notes are often buried by the overwhelming taste of earwax and soap. You know that taste. You try to convince yourself that it’s a part of the experience, all the while your sensible side is screaming out. “Nothing you put in your body should taste like soap!” it says. You ignore it.

My favorite flavor in a cocktail is definitely cinnamon, and I don’t know if mixologists are bestowed with better cinnamon when they graduate that 6-hour mixing science class, but I will die on this hill insisting it, and shaming loudly and publicly an entity like TGI Friday’s for even trying to imitate. As an avid hip-hop fan and hobbyist rapper, I’m not a fan of biting another’s style.

Craft cocktails are kind of like when your older brother comes home from war. I’ve never had an older brother, but the feeling those commercials give me where the kid’s older brother comes home from war is pretty similar to when I drink a craft cocktail: a final moment of relief after months of drinking dark flower water.

This isn’t to say that if you drink craft beer in 2019 you’re stupid, you just don’t know as much as you could, okay? Like how craft cocktails are garnished with leaves and whatnot, and how the essence of hops floating around in a craft beer only suggests THE IDEA of leaves. The choice is simple.

You can’t do any real good sharing posts and giving opinions about every topical social and political issue.

Find the issue that means something to you and dive into it like your favorite video game. Uncover every nook and cranny. Don’t waste your life knowing just enough about every headline when you can know far more about a single community and cause.

These are people experiencing these issues after all, and if you don’t talk to them, then you’re missing something very important.

Don’t let your desire to get stuff destroy your ability to connect with other people

I’m writing this because I need to hear it. A month ago, I might have been writing this in the same way an H.P. Lovecraft character writes his final letter to the University that had him visit the town where he found THE THING AND OH MY GOD IT’S COMING, which just wouldn’t have been a good look when I reflected back on it months later. If you’re like me and your drive drastically exceeds your sense of creative direction, then you need to hear this too. 

Jobs are easy. When I’m told what to do at a job, I do it. A lot of creatives think creating content is a step on a path to getting a creative job, but the past couple of years have made me realize that if you’re taking steps to make sure people see that content, and building a network of people who will share your content, you’re actually starting a business, and that takes a lot of work and time.

I’m told I can get what I want faster if I ‘hustle” which seems to mean to the person who said it “work so much that you don’t have the time or energy to love” and I’ll gladly take the long way round. Hell, I know people who “hustled” the way I just described it and still haven’t achieved anything more now than they did a couple years ago. I’m still not where they are, but I don’t think I have a huge desire to do what they do.

For the past 2 years I’ve simultaneously been trying to be a rapper and a comic book creator. If you know how much time it takes to create quality content doing either, then you know. If you don’t: it’s a lot. Put that to the side for a second and these are still two very different industries with two very different social contexts, and when I started I didn’t really have a decent grasp of either. 

Now it’s more like I took what I thought was good about both, and absorbed them into who I was as a person. Add on top of that that I’m still trying to build a career in digital marketing and my girlfriend is pissed. OH YEAH I ALSO HAVE A GIRLFRIEND.

We’re in the age of doing it all and no sleep, but if you look at the output of a Childish Gambino, it’s way more controlled than a dude in his bedroom on his computer from the moment he wakes up to the moment he goes to bed. That’s what a lot of us first think of when we think of productivity, and it’s wrong.

Work is a diet, and if it’s all carbs you’re gonna sink. I don’t say this from a output and reward place when it comes to what your work can do for you financially or in terms of brand awareness. I say it from a place of spiritual wellness. Kanye West has everything, and he’s dying inside.

I’ve started to equate my projects to video games lately. There’s nothing else really that the average person spends hours trying to complete and (hopefully) tries to squeeze in the time to do it around family and work responsibilities. But it also comes down to what kind of person you are: someone who wants as much stuff as possible as soon as possible, or someone who will work toward their dream like they work toward 100% completion in Skyrim, not as a way to change their reality, but as a way to create a part of it that is just for them.

This is the first page of a then-topical storyline that ran eight years ago, and even then Octopus Pie was so good at establishing setting that I - seeing this storyline for the first time - was able to understand that it takes place during the 2011 Occupy Wall Street protests. It’s really good!
