𝚨 𝐃𝐄𝐄𝐏 𝐈𝐍𝚮𝚨𝐋𝐄 𝐓𝐎 𝐒𝐓𝐄𝚨𝐃𝐘 𝐓𝚮𝐄 𝐖𝚨𝐑 𝐈𝐍𝐂𝐈𝐓𝐄𝐃 𝐈𝐍𝐒𝐈𝐃𝐄 𝐎𝐅 𝚮𝐈𝐌𝐒𝐄𝐋𝐅—anything, any word given against his own intentions felt like a sin dropped into the jaw of death. steve was as bucky remembered, nothing major had changed within him like he had felt within himself. the drastic way he felt of life was almost compared to black and white. still, he fought this difference back inside of himself as if it were unwelcome to rear its face amongst the other emotions that dwelled freely without consequence. bucky’s eyes lowered to the ground at the sound of the word ‘choice’. steve knew that bucky had not been given much choice in the matter for where is story would continue—still bucky felt as though regardless of that he was guilty of the sins where his chapters lied.

bucky lowered his gaze further more to the ground. no answered willed themselves forward, much to his expectations. the sound of steve’s voice cutting through the silence brought him anxiety, and he knew that his words would not measure up towards the weight that he had caused in simply existing. he inhaled deeply, his eyes falling onto steve’s ❝ and what if that’s not enough? ❞ his own voice sounded out through whatever silence that had taken place in the absence of sound, ❝ what if, no matter what efforts you place… nothing will ever be enough? ❞ a short pause before he furrowed his brows to drive his words in deeper, ❝ don’t tell me it’s not true and don’t say it’s possible… i know what i’ve done… i know i’ve hurt people. ❞

as disappointing as the news was, it was nowhere near enough to topple the feeling of hope and happiness that now radiates within steve in knowing that bucky was out there and alive. bucky is alive. he does his best not to notice the sorrow lacing that smile as he places a hand on sam’s shoulder and gives it a light squeeze. ❛ 𝐢 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐢𝐭, 𝐬𝐚𝐦. 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲, 𝐢 𝐝𝐨. ❜ he should be the one out there doing the work. finding bucky is all he can really think about these days. it’s all he wants. would it really be so selfish to give up saving the world for one second? it wasn’t like he was the only one looking after it, after all. instead, it falls to sam.

as he listened, steve took a long, quiet, and slow breath in. steeling himself again. if he was sure of anything right now, it was that coming apart right now definitely wouldn’t do either of them any good. it wasn’t his place to fall apart, anyway. ❛ i know. ❜ steve replied and fell silent. but you deserve to. you deserve a second chance. you deserve to forget. you deserve to be happy… steve wanted to say all of it. he wanted to say it because it was the truth. but would hearing it help? and how long until bucky actually believed it? steve would repeat it until his voice gave out if he knew for sure. but he didn’t. steve didn’t have any answers… but he was here. no matter what happens. ❛ so you do what you can. tip the scale further and further in the direction you want it every chance you get. ❜
