Fast forward at the end of the story, during the scene where Grace is teaching the Eridian children, he actually uses a piano-like instrument to translate English into Eridian, which i think is so cute.

one subtle detail in the book that i absolutely love is that the Hail Mary crew's names are written in their native language instead of being Americanized or transliterated. Grace is written as "grace", Yáo is written "姚" and Ilyukhina as "Илюхина".

Its such an insignificant detail but i think makes the crew feel more diversified and also respects their cultural identity.

Yesss and probably this detail has been mentioned before, but i havent seen it; during the funeral, im pretty sure grace tucks a sheet of chinese ink calligraphy into yao’s hands 😭😭

Take the rest w a grain of salt bc im a banana who mostly learnt this shit thru the internet and reading hundreds of cn webnovels (but also my fam has been gifted 春联 and upside down 福 before!)

Calligraphy as an art was, at one point in history, one of the four great scholarly arts (琴棋书画) along with the qin(instrument), wei chess, and drawing (but more like painting)(ink painting i thinkg?). If u had a skill issue w it then people were like. Hah, he cant even calligraphy. What a broke low class illiterate loser.

Outside of daily writing, this skill served to indicate that 1) u got the time and monee to spend on a teacher & practice, 2) u have the patience to refine the skill to a certain degree.

Your calligraphy was, and still is seen as a reflection of you as a person; rash, impatient, scrooge-y, elegant, soft, forceful, etc.

It’s often used in webnovels (idk in the real world but probably smth similar HHAAHHA) as a method of 1) gifting (bc great calligraphy writing is seen as valuable!! People analyse this stuff akin to painting analysis), 2) calming one’s mind (bc making art is theraputic!!! Yayyyy), and 3) pondering yourself and philosophies/reaffirming your purpose in life or your life path, the actions you are going to take in the future (e.g. writing “耐” (literally, to endure) to remind oneself to be patient, or smth; this is a VERY banana crude example ive seen in webnovels 😂😂😂)

Anyways so i was thinking those calligraphies probabky held some insight into what yao was thinking, heading into space to try and make use of what little hope tau ceti could offer humanity 😭😭 would love to read it, i wonder if they actually wrote anything pn it! Fuckk meeeee but when grace is holding the stack of papers for him (went and watched scene again to verify that there was calligraphy paper haha) im pretty sure yao packed himself his child’s handwriting sheets 😭😭😭 this one is less clear but, its 1) the handwriting is BIG and in square boxes (like in children’s [or amateur] practice sheets!), 2) it looks like mine (mine is shit and childish hahahahhaah) so its not mature handwriting, and 3) i thibk i catch a glimmer of a red circle??? On the top of the page??? 😭😭 which could be a teacher’s marking 😭😭😭😭😭 omggg

For the childish writing; 1) is where i see the red mark, looks to be some kinda thing (number?) in a red circle, 2) is the scrawling handwriting haha (ngl i cant recognise any of the characters, it coukd be trad chinese! Or we are seeing the side where the ink has bled to the other side (i always practised using pencil tho haha), or it could be japanese??? Idk cant read it lmao (there is one character resembling horse. I wonder if its just bc the handwriting is REAL bad… 😅😅)

For the calligraphy; 1) the borders fat asf, common in calligraphy paper, 2) the lettering looks thick, like it was made w ink & brush! 3) the characters seem to go downward in columns, and trad calliraphy (and early chinese printing!!!) is read right to left, up to down in vertical columns (which worked well bc chinese characters are of uniform size [cough the struggle of making 中 vs 喜 the same size hhhhhh])

Anyways i always cry at this scene 🥺🥺🥺 like bro is just a guy. He probably copied his fav passage to read on the ship or smth 😭😭 or maybe it was a gift from a family member to strengthen his willpower and keep the depression at bay 😭😭😭 my shaylahs

I have a little theory (actually its not even a theory) in the scene where Rocky saves Grace after their taumoeba collecting mission.

In the movie, you can clearly see Rocky visibly venting out what looks like smoke (?) but ig it's never rly explained. However in the book, we get to learn more abt Eridian biology and as it turns out, Rocky is essentially steam powered. Eridians have 2 circulatory systems - an ambient one that runs at 210 degrees and a hot one that reaches 305 degrees.

My guess is that what we're seeing isn't smoke at all, but rather steam escaping after Rocky pushes himself out of the dividers to save Grace.
