perfectlycrystal replied to your post: Hanji could be a Japanese word as well.
its a type of korean paper its also used in japanese but its more traditionally used in korean they might be right depending on if its used more as a name in japanese
yeah i mean japanese are korean are both similar languages as well so idk i didnt find more than korean paper when i looked it up
Hanji could be a Japanese word as well.
i said that as well lmao
[12:15:00 AM] connie: what could hanji be [12:15:13 AM] connie: hanji’s really asian sounding so maybe she’s like mikasa [12:15:21 AM] Niko: hanji is a korean word
alright so this post has gotten p popular and i although the art is very nice, the majority of the nationalities aren't well thought out. my friend niko and i have narrowed down what the snk cast's nationalities could be.
➞ first off i'll list the ones that are obviously german due to their names?
- eren jäger. jäger is "hunter" in german.
- reiner braun. half german/half scandinavian since reiner is old german and old norse.
- sasha braus. sasha is of russian roots but is a common general european name. braus is german.
- berholdt fuber. berholdt is an old german name.
- annie leonhardt. leonhardt is dutch but snk is thought to take place in germany.
- jean kirschtein. he's possibly half/half due to jean. niko thinks french/german.
➞ next are the ones we narrowed down as part or full dutch due to the name meanings.
- armin arlelt. research proves that armin is a dutch name.
- marco bodt. last name is dutch and first name is italian, so half/half, possibly?
➞ the only full french character we've decided is
- rivaille. there isn't actually much information on that name, but the spelling has french traits; the english pronounciation would sound french as well.
➞ scandinavian
- ymir is the name of a norwegian god, so we pegged her as norwegian. the artist said swedish, and while both countries are nordics, the names are considerably different.
➞ characters that are either english or american
- connie springer was seen as american in the art; springer is an english name, so the reasoning of him being american is not very far off.
- irvin smith. irvin is celtic and smith is originally english, so we put him as generally british.
➞ half european/half asian characters
- mikasa ackerman is half/half in canon, as seen by asian mother and european father. ackerman is german while mikasa is japanese.
- hanji zoe. hanji is a korean word, which zoe has been used in different countries, since it has latin roots. it's commonly used in mediterranean countries, so hanji is half korean/half medditerranean.
(i'm sorry this is so sloppily written!! this was the outcome of a long skype conversation within our group and i think we all did a pretty good job!!)
niko and i have been rearranging that snk nationalities post and figuring out the possibilities of what the characters could be!! should i post what we've deduced?
