6 years later still sad, on this day I lost my most loyal friend. My beautiful boy was gone after 17 years. He was the most beautiful black Labrador, last of the true English line. I was trapped indoors with my sadness because the official pandemic lockdown was going to start. Since then I still feel a loss, not just for him but for other things that didn’t happen because of the pandemic.

I am not from Pasadena/Altadena but I worked in the area. One of my favorite jobs was working in a school in Altadena. I’ve seen two people I remember from back then that lost their homes on the news.I messaged my last boss to ask her how her family was, I knew she grew up there. She said they were affected by the fires. I even reached out to someone I don’t speak with anymore and found out they also lost their home. I am scared to reach out to anyone else, there is just so much loss.

Altadena is a beautiful, historic and diverse community with deep connections. The great risk of losing generational wealth is a concern, because like most of Los Angeles it’s skyrocketed in price. A million dollar home is common but it’s not what outsiders think it is. The comments from people not familiar with this part of town are offensive. If a local especially one that lost their home is trying to explain what it’s like, you should listen. I keep liking posts from local Black residents that explain how their families have been there for generations. It’s important to learn about this especially if you’re not from the area. Early Southern California limited where Black families could live, it was called red lining. If someone is explaining that don’t try and say but the homes are expensive, it’s still majority White. You’re not acknowledging their risk of losing generational wealth and falling to understand that house prices in the area are tremendously high because of lack of supply and location.

Pacific Palisades has also had extreme loss in their communities. It should be seen as such, and not taken for granted because everyone assumes all those people are wealthy. Loss is loss, only someone that went through that will understand. Yes, being wealthy will make the recovery faster but the pain is still there. We need to all support one another, to keep insurance companies, utility companies, politicians and predatory investors accountable. Cherish what you have, stay safe.
