The same craggy cliffs. The same stones, cracks and fissures running through the same rock. The same clouds and the same mountains, blue-tinged and jagged peaks in the distance. It’s been two years, and Lan Wangji remembers exactly where he left him. Wei Ying. Where tufts of moss and grass and weed gild the ground, and where he faltered, forcing his feet forward when everything else in him stirred the other way. He never made it back to Gusu in one piece, and the ache’s never really subsided; it stalls behind, a strain in his chest every time he breathes.
In the grand scheme of things, the chances of finding him here again are slim at best. Being here at all now is a feat in itself, because Lan Wangji doesn’t do impulsive. He doesn’t miscalculate, doesn’t stray. Over three thousand rules conduct his life and constrict his mind, and yet here he stands, trekking up the steep slope of the valley without a hitch in his breath. Without remorse. After his brother gently prodded him for weeks, Lan Wangji ultimately surrendered and left the Cloud Ressesses, because his home, he knows now, never was in Gusu. His home wears black and a smile too wide, a hint of mischief under a fan of long lashes, and two years down the road, Lan Wangji strays—or maybe he finally roams the path he was always meant to walk.
