This latest chapter in Lookism really opened my eyes to some characters and the use themes in the story. First of all, it made me realize that PTJ is legit making the story up as he goes. It also brought up the topic of female-on-male rape. Now, I’m not sure if everyone in the fandom is going to take Gap being taken advantage of by Rei seriously.
However, this can explain how he became so sex crazed and frequently cheating on Minseon. It could also explain why he’s not that emotionally active in his marriage, raising Jake, and in the other son’s lives. According to a research article on adult sexual assault by the US Department of Veterans Affairs, men “may engage in compulsive sexual behaviors as a way to cope or reaffirm their sense of manhood.” (Keith and Skidmore, n.d.) His philandering and genuine dismissal of the aftermath of his excursions would be the product of Rei’s assault.
Now all this is just my theory. We do see Gap flirting with every woman he sees in previous chapters. However, we’re not sure if he was just a charismatic, young adult male who’s obsessed with the idea of romance and having a legacy. The assault might have skewed something in him. Granted, PTJ is pretty hamfisted with the talk of rape since we had Mitsuki and Darius’s assaults not having any lasting effects on the characters. It also seems like everyone forgot about the victims of Club Vivi and all the stuff Workers got away with. So, I doubt PTJ would have any in-depth thoughts on creating this new character.
I’m sorry for being long-winded. This topic in media is very important to me and my line of work. I can’t help but analyze topics and scenes when they are used.
