My heart is broken. #Repost @domzthompson • • • As you may or may not know (those living overseas), there is a huge hurricane hitting the Carolinas at this very moment.  At this point, the storm is expected to do severe damage and be declared a national disaster.  Rightfully so, people living in the path of this storm have evacuated with their families and their companion animals (dogs and cats). However, one large group is being left behind.  This group, is farmed animals.  They are deemed as property (not life) so they are replaceable to farmers via the USDA.  To give you a better perspective, two years ago, hurricane Matthew hit the Carolinas, causing widespread destruction and damage.  Over 2 million farmed animals drowned.  Yeah, two fucking million and if you ask me, too fucking many.  North Carolina is home to about 9 million pigs.  It’s ranked second in the nation in pig production.  It’s also home to millions of farmed chickens and turkeys.  They rank 3rd in the nation in this category with respect to production. To those of you who don’t care about these farmed animals, I want you to care about the people living in this area.  Why? Because the low-income community there will also be affected.  How?  Public health officials have warned of the animal waste storage ponds (already a problematic issue, holding tens of millions of pounds of animal waste), set to contaminate rivers and more, causing a public health and environmental emergency.  People impacted by this have some form of protection.  Some.  Farmed animals are afforded NO legal protection.  None.
