Today Is Henry Jamison’s birthday!

An empty cupboard. A child crying with hunger. Harassing phone calls from creditors. An eviction notice. Contempt from people who happen to be doing better. . . . The catalogue of humiliations and deprivations faced by those living below the poverty line goes on and on. And this is an overwhelming prospect that more of us are confronted with, as a changing economy and social structure widens the gap between the haves and the have-nots, putting many of us one paycheck away from ruin.

Do you see yourself in this article? Something needs to change. Wages are so low, that someone can work full time and not be able to make ends meet. So many of us are struggling, while the boss drives by in his shiny new Land Rover. I’ve seen comments on articles similar to this that say things like, “If you don’t make enough, get another job, go to school, gains new skills.” It’s hard to work two or three jobs when you are short on energy due to lack of food. Too many jobs pay too little wages. Going to school requires money and time, which are luxuries to many workers. Being poor does not mean people are lazy or stupid-it means that wages have not risen along with the cost of living because those at the top continue to take bigger slices of the pie, and feel that their employees are expendable. If one is not making enough to pay for necessities, eventually it will hurt the overall economy as consumer spending goes down. I know many people who do not own a car, do not have a smartphone, and are only getting by because they buy food, heating oil and pay for insurance via a credit card-which increases their debt, but increases the amount that big banks make on interest. And those people work full time. This is the United States of America, and we won’t ever be the greatest country on Earth if the majority of our citizens can no longer “make a living”.

With so many online options, Americans now expect more from stores and restaurants. But a labor shortage means that service employees don’t need to put up with rude customers.

People working in customer service jobs are underpaid and overworked. Today’s customers are more demanding than in the past. The next time you have to wait in a line, or a mistake is made, don’t take it out on the person waiting on you-have a little empathy. Until wages go up, workload is evenly distributed, and breaks are given-these folks are doing the best they can. They are not trying to cause a customer to have a bad experience, they are just trying their best to make a living in these bad conditions.

Yep. Paying so many people low wages so they must use credit to survive. The fat cats make money off the poor’s interest payments. Banks do well, making the economy look better, while so many bust their asses every day trying to survive.

Do these people realize that many folks who work forty hours a week are struggling financially? Workers need a living wage. Many baby boomers I know never plan to retire-they plan to work as long as they can get a job-which is a struggle in itself.
