Spring Tour (first leg)
We recently returned home after a week on the road. We’re going to rest up for a few days and get back at it later this week. We head to Red Deer, Lloydminster and Saskatoon. Here's a recap of our past week:
Monday - The Ironwood, Calgary - Our first order of business in Calgary was a radio performance at UP 97.7. This one was a solo acoustic performance. We played one cover (Mrs. Robinson), and one of ours (Bring It On Home). We haven’t done too many of these so it felt pretty good to get some airtime. Next order of business was loading in at the venue.. When we walked into this venue we were all like, “Oh yeah!” There’s just nothing bad about this place. The room is beautiful, and the sound is second to none. Our sound guy JT was an absolute pro. He’s been doing sound for as long as we’ve been alive, mixing for bands like Nazareth back in the day. The room was full and we were thrilled to play to a crowd that was there to hear and enjoy music. This show became one of our most memorable to date, a great we to kick off the week!
Tuesday & Wednesday – Rose & Crown, Banff – Pulling into Banff is always a great feeling. The place just puts you at ease. The big difference with these shows was the absence of our bass player, James. Unfortunately he couldn’t make these dates due to work. We were happy to have good friend Dallas Ference step in to play bass with us for both of these shows. There was a decent amount of people at these shows, but it was totally opposite of Ironwood. They listened, but their #1 priority was getting wasted.. We just stuck to our guns, had fun, and played a ton of songs. About 45 each night. Dallas did an awesome job. Huge props to him for stepping in like that! Playing 2 nights allowed for lots of time to enjoy the mountains. We hit the hot springs, ate good meals and watched the Leaf’s first playoff game in 9 years!! I (Justin) am the only Leafs fan but come on it’s been forever!
Thursday – Day off, Calgary – The group was narrowed down to 3 guys on this day. Dallas went back to Edmonton early this morning, and took Meryll and Danielle with him (Justin & Colin’s ladies). The two girls came along for a few days of fun, but returned home for work. Calgary was really hot so obviously we decided to spend some time on Wurst’s patio. Colin actually suited up and put in some hours at a law firm earlier in the day. What a keener. That evening we just sat back, ate a home cooked meal courtesy of friend Andrew Webster, and watched playoff hockey. Andrew put us up twice on this trip, so big thanks to him!
Friday – The Slice, Lethbridge – The drive to Lethbridge was pretty quick and easy. We had another in studio performance to make at Rock 106. We did a quick interview and performed ‘Bring it on home’ again. After that we had a lot of down time. Lucky for us our hotel had a waterslide! Need I say more? We were reunited with James early that evening. He bussed from Edmonton to Lethbridge to make the show. The Slice is a pretty cool venue and the show went well. We made some new friends and fans.. mission accomplished! The strangest thing happened that night in the hotel room. When James was setting up the fold out bed, he touched something and jumped back in the dark. When we turned on the lights we saw OLD roast beef that had basically become jerky in the sheets. We were grossed out, and went on to find half eaten chicken rotting in our fridge. We were looking for out best sleep in days and didn’t get it after this. Of course there wasn’t a manager on duty that night, or the whole weekend for that matter. We are still fighting for a refund.
Saturday – Kergano’s, Moose Jaw – This was a big drive. We had to make a 3pm Radio interview with Mix 103, and just got there in time. We were all getting a little nutty in the tour van. Teagan interviewed us and recorded an acoustic verion of ‘Bring it on home.’ At the time we thought the performance was live, but as we were driving around town, we heard our interview on air, and pulled over with excitement to listen to the recorded performance. I don’t exactly know how to explain what we felt at that moment, but it was one of my highlights of music in general. We do receive some radio play around Edmonton, but to hear something like that 8 hours from home, in a town that’s foreign to you was pretty special. To us that was a little taste of what all those big bands get every day. We were buzzing after that. The show at Kergano’s was a full band, acoustic performance. It’s a classy place and called for a more intimate sound. The place wasn’t too busy, but those who were there responded well. Thanks to our friend Kerri who brought out her friends! She also spoiled us with comfortable beds (roast beef free), nachos, and brunch the following morning. Thank you Kerri, and thank you Moose Jaw. We all really enjoyed the charm this place has.
Sunday was a long, tiring drive. We unloaded all of our gear at the jam space, returned the tour van and headed home. It was a great week, full of fun and fatigue.. However, fun always outweighs the fatigue. We just wanted to keep going!
Spring Tour is here!
After months of anticipation, we are finally hitting the road for our spring tour. We kicked it off this past Friday night at the Whistle Stop Pub in Jasper, Alberta. It was a fun night and we were really impressed at how many friends from Edmonton made the trip to be there!
Today is April 28th, another day we've been looking forward to for a long time. The Edmonton Music Awards take place tonight, and we are nominated for 'Rock Album of the year'. Knowing that our hard work has been acknowledged with this nomination means a lot to us. We're looking forward to the event, whether we win the award or not. It's humbling to share the category with some great artists.
Hopefully we don't have TOO much fun tonight, because we are hitting the road at 7am tomorrow. We rented a tour van this time around, which will be a luxury. I still don't know how we packed 4 guys with merch and gear into an SUV last time around. We are scheduled for a radio interview at UP 97.7 in Calgary Monday morning. We will also be performing 2 acoustic songs, one original and one cover. We will be doing radio performances in Moose Jaw and Lethbridge as well. We hit the Ironwood Stage for the first time that evening. It's an early show, first band's up at 8pm.
We will keep you up to date with all of the tour happenings. Check out our Instagram, Facebook and Twitter for live updates and pictures from the road (@shortofable). Please take a look at the tour dates above, just in case we're coming to a town near you!

Canadian Music Week (in closing)
To pick up where the last entry left off, the Sask / Alberta showcase was an awesome night. The Gladstone hotel was the venue for the evening and the room just sounded amazing. The bands on the bill were Andy Shauf, Nuela Charles, We Were Lovers, Sidney York, Foam Lake and Wool on Wolves. I've never seen a performer that makes a room fall silent like Andy Shauf. When he plays, everyone shuts up and listens. A musician's dream.
One of the highlights of the week was a trip to Joao Carvalho's Mastering studio. Both of our albums were mastered here, and our jaws were on the floor during this tour. The place just felt comfortable and creative. His mastering room is one of the most acoustically precise rooms in the world, complete with beautiful woodwork and the best equipment money can buy. We gave him a copy of each album, and were happy to sign them upon his request. Once we had seen all the rooms, we went across the street to see the 'Revolution Recording' studio. Once again, our jaws hit the floor when we toured this building. Pictured above is Studio B. It sounds just as good as it looks. We heard a girl singing in the next room and he informed us it was Serena Ryder recording something new live in studio. Pretty cool. It would be a dream to record here, and we left this place buzzing with new ideas and inspired by all the possibilities. Joao's one of the best in the business, a true master at what he does... get it? I'd say he's also one of the nicest.
The last days of our trip involved more learning at the conference, and lots of opportunity to talk with major players in the music industry. The nights were pure music, and the last band we watched was Edmonton's own Shout Out Out Out Out at the Horseshoe Tavern. The place was absolutely packed, and their show was awesome. A great way to end the festival.
The whole week was a blast, and we didn't really waste any of it. We played our showcase, met some of our idols, made some contacts, made some fans, ate lots of street meat (great hot dogs in TO), drank beers, saw a Leafs home game, and had an endless supply of great live music. It was a cold week, but we missed Edmonton's winter apocolypse so can't complain.
We're proud to be part of a city (and province) that's full of really good bands, and it felt good to represent that in Toronto. Now that we're home and getting some sleep, the focus moves to our next show. We are playing Avenue Theatre on April 4th. We open for Two Hours Traffic and Rah Rah.. Can't wait!
Canadian Music Week (so far)
We have been in Toronto for 3 nights now. The plane ride got a little interesting when we were told we could bring our guitars on the plane if overhead storage allowed for it. A few of the plane's clientel got really heated when they saw us tucking our guitars in, and it got pretty heated. There was a lot of swearing and name calling.. towards us. I've never felt so ganged up on. It was an odd start to the trip but we ended up moving our guitars into the fragile storage, and they were still in one piece when we got to Toronto.
We did a little touring the first morning here.. you're never more than a stone's throw away from a pub, so.. we saw a lot of pubs. It really felt like the longest day ever, as our showcase was at 1am that night at Cherry Cola's. We were pumped to find out it's a common hang out for bands like Foo Fighters, Arctic Monkeys, etc.. Them Crooked Vultures played the same stage. We were worried we'd have a dead bar with a 1am showcase in a city that's foreign to us, but to our surprise, it was pretty packed, with a really attentive music crowd. Our set felt good and we had a good reception.. it's really all we could ask for. Some old friends of ours sacrificed sleep that night to come support us, big thanks to them!
Wednesday day and night were awesome. We did a lot of downtown exploring, and ended up at the Horseshoe Tavern and saw some killer sets by NQ Arbuckle, Jim Cuddy/Danny Michel to name a few. I (Justin) was standing beside Luke Doucet and his wife, and as a fan I was really excited and bought them both a beer. Later that night, we met Dave Foley, Jim Cuddy, and Rachel McAdams was in the bar. Not used to seeing so many well known people in one place. There's so many bands playing at night, and we've been hitting as many venues as possible. So many awesome bands, I haven't seen a bad one yet.
We've been hitting the CMW conference all day for the last couple days, and soaking up all the knowledge we can. There's big names and important people everywhere, so there's great networking opportunities. Had a sit down with Alan Cross today and learned all I could in 15 minutes with him. The schedule is pretty gruelling, as the shows run until 4am, and the conference starts by 9am. And it's Effing COLD here.. that kind of cold that just soaks into your bones. That's my only complaint.
Tonight is the Alberta and Saskatchewan music showcase, which we're really looking forward to. Doors are in a few hours so we're going to take a nap and head out for the night!
We are off to Toronto! For the first time, Short of Able will be attending Canadian Music Week. The Festival runs March 19-24, 2013, and it will be the first time we've ever played in the East. Our showcase is late Tuesday night, at Cherry Cola's Rock'N'Rolla Cabaret, which has played host to bands such as Them Crooked Vultures. We're pretty pumped to step onto a stage that has had some of our musical idols on it.
This week will offer plenty of opportunities, and it's a great learning experience. We're looking to get our music into the hands of people that can further us as a band, and learn what the next step is. We're lucky to have been selected to attend the Festival, and owe a lot to the people that continue to support us. After we get back home we will be preparing for a spring tour, and we'll have some new merch to unveil as well. Before we hit the road though, we will be playing an Edmonton show April 4th at Avenue Theatre, opening for Rah Rah and Two Hours Traffic! See you soon!

Happy Fall!
We hope everyone has had a great summer with lots of patios and sunshine. Last time we blogged, we were right in the middle of recording our album. Its been a crazy busy summer, but we are happy to say we are done our album and we cannot wait to get this album out to you all. The album has 15 songs and it is called "The Last One's Gone". There is a good mix of modern hard hitting tunes and some stripped down acoustic tracks. We are extremely proud of the album and look forward to playing it live this fall. We are currently working on an official website that will have all of our information with regards to tour dates and album and merch sales. Stay tuned for an announcement of the website launch. It should be fairly soon.
We wanted to mention one more thing in todays blog. We were awarded a grant to create a music video this summer. With this grant, we hired Blake McWilliam from Back Road productions to help bring together a video we have wanted to do forever. We brought 30 of our closest friends and fans on the High Level Bridge Streetcar for a live intimate acoustic show. The streetcar drove right out to the middle of the HIgh Level Bridge in Edmonton and stopped, where we played for about 40 minutes out there as the sun went down. It was an amazing time up there! Blake and his crew filmed the entire day, from arrival at the trolley headquarters right to the return from the High Level. We look forward to seeing what Blake comes up with for a video. It should be great!
This is it for now, however, keep posted! There will be lots to talk about over the next few months.
Cheers
May.... Our favourite month
Well its been a few month since the band has done any recording. We have all been busy in our personal lives and working hard to clear some time to hammer out this record. We have recorded all the drums and plan to start the bass guitar tomorrow. We are doing this very raw and will not beat using many pro-tool cheats to tighten the band. What you will hear is what we actually played and performed with out quantizing, or beat detective or synth beats. We are planning to finish recording un June, followed by a mix and master completion in mid August. An album release is in the works and we plan on hitting towns all around Western Canada on this album release. Be sure to let your friends know about us
With all that being said, May is a crazy month. Both Justin and Devin have the same Birthday, and all the boys will be heading to Vegas for Colin's Bachelor Party and a couple guys are heading home for their 10 year reunion in Saskatchewan. Maybe some new songs will come out of these adventures.
We thank you for reading and keeping up with the band and we promise a lot of new music and other cool media coming this summer. Stay tuned, this is just the beginning.
In the meantime, Cheers from Short of Able
1 year ago today we released our debut album. Its been an amazing year! THANK YOU TO EVERYONE INVOLVED!
Hey friends, We are putting in some hard work getting this album going. We spent the better half of this last week laying down drums. Colin is doing a great job and he is getting some awesome grooves. We have just a couple more songs left on the drums then we will get James going on the bass. For any of you just tuning in, thanks for following us on our new album journey. Stay tuned..
On the road!
