hi starlings! we've gotten all of the stories for this season of the short story tournament!! you can see the list here, and i'll be posting the bracket tomorrow.
i'm busy this week (my partners are visiting :3) but after this week the short story tournament will commence!
here's our bracket for this year!!
i know we just started but im pausing the short story tournament for a day or two cause i got covid and am feeling unable to do anything rn. im rlly sorry
i think perspective in science fiction is important. premee mohamed says the redoubtables was originally going to be from the pov of one of the scientists, but switching to this new perspective made it click. its a strong choice to write about an incident indirectly - its one of the cores of science fiction, exploring how tech changes the world, but its also tough to avoid just showing it directly.
im so fascinated by the directions in the husband stitch on how to read the story out loud. im really fascinated by how it treats gender. my immediate instinct is to read it as showing the literal performativity of gender, how these roles are a story we tell. and that makes the choice to describe the narrator's voice as high pitched and forgettable so interesting - i feel like she's leaning into misogynistic views to make a point.

Still rising, the edge of the thing reveals itself. No chaotic meteor-strike with lacy edges of ejecta but a smooth dinnerplate of a crater, whitely bereft of life, and in the center a darkness so profound that it seems astronomical rather than nautical, a black hole from which no light can escape, nor the grains of sand or stars.
julian k jarboe describes writing i am a beautiful bug! "in a bad mood, atop an uncomfortable chair, inside of a poorly-ventilated room, while listening to the Katamari Damacy theme song on loop". and i think you can tell. the narrative voice of the piece is astounding and the way it just keeps going and spiraling stranger is a joyride
liking what you see: a documentary is so fascinating - i like that it comes up with an issue i genuinely dont know where i would stand on. its a really messy topic, and i think chiang does a great job at showing conflicting opinions and then making it messier by showing you, for example, what corporations are supporting

morrigan in the sunglare fascinates me. its a really interesting choice to lean into the earth as pacifist - this might be the first short story i've read that's made me read a wikipedia page on philosophy! - but also to contrast it with war and if it could be necessary. having read the story, im still not sure what to take away - is war necessary? do we just tell ourselves it is? is it human nature to be pacifist or to be violent? if y'all have thoughts on the story, i'd love to hear about it!
i got to see theodore mccombs read from his book live last summer, and something he mentioned was how two-tongued jeremy wasn't working until he wrote the ending scene, which i find fascinating bc the ending is so out of nowhere (fully different characters!). if people have thoughts on that - or on anything else about the story - let's talk about it!!

no worries!! i don’t think most people know. she’s been vocal abt it but isn’t SUPER vocal about it and she’s kinda kept a lower profile since. and honestly even if she was super famous for it i wouldn’t blame you, things fly under our radars sometimes.

im gonna try to be more talkative on here this year. bc for modern stories with less of a readership sometimes i read a batshit insane story and find that no one else has ever talked about it online and i wanna talk to folks abt stories i like!!
sorry to be the bearer of bad news but i will not be including a story by chimamanda ngozi adichie due to her public transmisogyny. i feel weird addressing it but id feel weird deleting the submission without saying anything. im not conducting full background checks on every writer but adichie has been in the news for her transphobia.
