ây'know--â
as with everything nowadays, vash takes his time with talking.
there's flowers drying where they hang above the doorway to their kitchen. it's miracle enough -- the fact that they have flowers to dry in the first place. vash looks to the counter where a band of gold sits waiting eagerly for him to finish the dishes so he can put it back on. looks to his ring finger -- there's a clear division where the sun has kissed around the wedding band as often as nicholas has. his husband leans on the counter next to him and vash feels --
( loved, whole, perfect, safe )
-- at peace. he could flood the desert with the tears that threaten to spill at the truth of it. but the world is quiet and his hair is black and his lover breathes quiet in the morning light and peace is the only word that fills his lungs with air when he inhales. smiles and it finally races to light up his eyes. nicholas says his last name like a sunday hymn. the stampede is hung up against the door with his coat the color of his mother's favorite flowers. vash prays he never has to wear either again.
finally--
âshe would've loved you.â
do you want to tell me the truth , this time ?
no. no i don't.
vash wants to find an excuse, any excuse, to leave the room. as it is, he doesn't look summer in the eye for a long, quiet moment. the truth is it's not safe if i stay. he bites the inside of the cheek until he tastes copper. the truth is, i never should have thought that i could stay. his past is a hungry wolf at his heels. he has never felt like prey but his rabbit heart kicks in his throat all the same. the dog is at the door. in the back of his mind, he can hear the hinges creak. the monster ready to swallow him whole.
if the world was fair he would be dead already.
he wants to tell summer the truth is he's scared. he wants to cry about the unfairness of the world and how badly he wants everything to stop long enough that he can catch his breath. he's been running for so long that he can't remember the last time oxygen hit the bottom of his lungs. he's been running and it isn't his fault.
he wishes he could tell her the truth.
âi'll be back soon enough, promise.â liar. broken record. seller of empty promises. bringer of disaster. humanoid typhoon. out in the world there are terrible things. horrible things. summer is no stranger to them. she's stared down the shadows with him plenty of times that they're both familiar with how they give way to light. but this is different. it feels different in a way that vash can't place because he feels it on a level he can't explain to a human. because you aren't human. you will never be human. it sounds like his brother's voice. it sounds like a threat. like the only promise that will ever be kept in his lifetime.
vash will never be human. he will never be able to lay his coat across the back of his friend's chair for more than a day without feeling the dread creep like bile up his throat. he feels nauseous all the time. he can't remember the last time he ate.
still his smile comes sure as flowers in spring. bright as daffodils in a window. he feels like broken glass. âc'mon -- you're one tough lady -- you don't want me around darkening your door all the time, do you?â
i think more people should hit vash with hammers
hey guys can we talk about vash the stampede

đ. | iâm not gonna let you keep acting like a jerk. / @shotheaven.
â you'll forgive me for not buckling in terror. â an acidic retort that pierces through thick, stagnant air with a knife-sharp tongue. still, their voice, a nethermost octave so low that one would need to strain to hear him, forcing absolute heed, does not waver from the typical monotony that accompanies them. saĂŻx does not quite acknowledge the unwelcome visitor as much as study him, the exquisite golden hue of ferocious eyes digging, like teeth into meat, onto his frame nearby.
they know, quite intimately, the naivety of those whose humanity still lies intact. a lifetime ago, they, too, were swaddled in ignorance, unaware of the extremes of existence itself, and the desperation of such beasts who lack the privilege of being. darkness laps along their sharp edges, imbuing their skin and reaching out, like thin and crooked fingers, towards the reality surrounding them. it binds to the atoms around him, perverting what light still remains after the collapse of their childhood town, serving as a warning of the violent cacophony looming just beneath their surface. â i'm not here to waste my time with someone trying to play the hero. you know nothing of what you fight for. â
â'm not any kind of hero, sorry for the misunderstanding.â the word skitters, insect-like, under his skin the moment it leaves saĂŻx's mouth. there's one thing that vash has never allowed himself to be and that's a hero. far in the past he'd shied from the term as he watched children march to war convinced that they would turn into heroes in their own stories. now, the memory sickens his stomach.
he knows how it looks. the brightness of himself and how close he lingers to the light. naĂŻve. scared.
he's neither of these things.
âbut i can't let you continue on here.â he knows a bit -- about the ones in black and the things that they seek. the violence that follows them sure as shadows and vash shifts his weight from one foot to the other. lifts his hands as if in surrender. apology. but he doesn't wilt beneath the gold of saĂŻx's gaze. there's nothing in him that can melt so easily. in his own version of defiance, he smiles. âso if y'could just-- skedaddle now? that'd be real swell.â
you're used to being stared at, for one reason or another. it's nothing new, but there's something different in the way @shotheaven looks at you. you feel your palms dampen with anxious sweat, and even though your hands are gloved, you wipe them against your sides anyways. you've been looked at in a lot of different ways, and the guilt etched onto his face mirrors the same look you've seen on your dad's, on uncle qrow's, every time you so much as glimpse at a photo of your mother ( rare, considering no one seems to want to talk about her, anyways ). â um... hi? â you don't mean for it to sound like a question. but your throat feels weirdly tight. you clear it, and instead offer a smile.
â are you okay? â genuine concern makes itself known, and you give a vague gesture towards... well, all of him. silver eyes train on his face, and your smile drops just a fraction. â you look like you've seen a ghost. â
âhuh--? what? oh no, no ghosts here little lady, no thank you. they scare me.â your laughter always comes easier than it feels and now is no different. you scratch the back of your neck. you refuse to look her in the eye
âyou don't remember me, do you?â you held her when she was small enough to hold your pinky with both her hands. when she was big enough, she tried to steal the glasses off your face and you still remember the warmth of her mother's laugh when you tried -- delicately -- to steal them back. she looks an awful lot like her. it has nothing to do with her eyes. it has everything to do with the sadness in her smile. âi mean, not surprised if you don't, you were real little last time i saw you! a little-r little lady.â
when you continue, you sound almost guilty. you always sound guilty, when you talk about the past. âi knew your mama. we were good friends.â
will you just let me be silly for a sec. there's this dread so ancient in me
ok hi. despite the pacifism and morality guiding vash, he very much believes that there are certain people out there that deserve to die. yes he believes in second (and third!) chances. yes he believes that everybody deserves a chance to live. but sometimes he does think that there are people out there that should die and the world would be better for it.
but that isn't vash's decision to make. and that's a large part of what drives the decisions that he DOES end up making. just because he thinks someone should die, does not automatically excuse him should he be the one to end that person's life. he offers people second chances, he offers people fair trials, he believes that everyone has the capacity for good because these are things that are (most of the time) the less permanent, less harmful options. we do see times when vash allowing someone to live does lead to someone else being harmed (i am begrudgingly looking at BLR especially for this). but vash's motives have never been to condemn people, nor are they to play as judge to those that have done wrong. vash refuses to decide who gets to die, because he is one person and that is never a decision that belongs to one person alone.
he does get angry, though. he does want revenge, sometimes. he does witness horrible things being done and has a moment where he thinks yes, this person deserves to die. and that's where his morals come into play because without them, he would be a very, very different man.
' one day , i wonât come back . '
âi think the same thing, a lot of days.â the admission isn't one that vash makes easily. but he's fast to cover it up with a laugh. an easy smile that hasn't reached his eyes since the big fall. âit's a lot easier to head for the hills, y'know --?â staying and fighting had only been his style when people wanted him around to stay and fight. vash remembers monster and get out and never come back more often than thank you. he thinks about how often rocks have hit his back long after he turned it. the ache of his legs when he runs and runs and runs and there's no place far enough to keep the pain from coming.
he doesn't want to imagine the kid in a similar situation. so he won't.
he doesn't know where sora comes from but he's familiar enough with the strength that comes with the weapon he wields. after all, centuries ago it was the first weapon he ever held. he ran then, too. he didn't look back. he couldn't go back now, even if he wanted to. vash threads his fingers together as he looks down at sora. the truth of his concern hidden behind kind smile.
âbut why d'you think that you won't come back? is it something i can help with?â
heheheheheheheh
