Yesterday morning was a very dark morning. At around 9:30AM my grandfather passed away after his lengthy battle with Multiple Myeloma and Dementia. He truly was a tough Irishman. Many times over the years, he had gotten sick and persevered through it. He was as tough as they come. In the 1950s, he served as a Marine in the Korean War. He would write to my grandmother and send her gifts from overseas. They were married for 62 years. Only 5 and a half months ago my grandmother passed away and he was absolutely heartbroken. Everyday after school I would go to their house. He always had on the History Channel, Law and Order or Judge Judy on TV (my love for Law and Order definitely stemmed from that) and he would sit in his chair making some of the funniest comments about the crazy people on Judge Judy which always made me laugh. Even while he was in the nursing home, he would say some of the funniest things when I visited him and it really showcased his personality even through the dementia. I learned many things from him, including how to play Rummy, that there’s never a bad time to have wine and Scotch and making sure any restaurant knows who I am when I walk in. This year has been a very hard year for me and my family, especially the last 5 and a half months. But knowing that he’ll be able to celebrate his birthday in 16 days with my grandmother gives me some peace. You’ll forever be my poppy 👴🏻❤️
