Once upon a time, a batch of us decided to redraw the first book of Detective Conan page by page into a Zine. And it was good.

Once upon a closer time, another batch decided to do the same with the first book of Magic Kaito. And it was good.

Why, then, not take the magic a little further still? Why not stroll around Tumblr and beyond, see how many of you like the idea of doing it with some real pillars of Shonen and Shoujo? 2026 has a whole bunch of Big anniversaries coming up, one after another...

So if this summer you think you'd like to put your pen and tablet to a certain boy's first Transmutation... a certain Pharaoh's first Shadow Games... a certain Princess's first Moontiara... and many, many more...

Aaaaaand that's time, folks, you've been a great votership! @livmadart, if you'll please hand me the winn... oh who am I kidding, we all know who the favorite was.

So our main priority will be getting his Redraw off the ground this summer (with a certain King of Games in a close second). But if you voted for one (or more!) of the others, despair not. We said we'd make a serious effort for every series that got more than 70 votes, and by now all of them have left that figure far in the dust! Maybe we should've set the bar a little higher...

Getting down to business... a set of preproduction emails has already gone out to all of you who checked (or mentioned) interest in modding one or more Redraws, so if you haven't already, please check and respond as soon as you can. And if you never checked that but figure you might be open to modding after all... please let us know ASAP! Inbox and DMs are always open on this blog!

To clarify: no formal signups have gone out yet. Those will go up individually for each zine that makes it off the ground, once a Discord infrastructure and proper number of mods have been established. We'll do our best to keep you updated both on Tumblr, and through your emails (if you left those on the Interest Check).

That should be all, except... oh. If there's a particular page of your chosen series you just can't get out of your head, and will Literally Die if you don't get to redraw... read on for a sneak preview of the method we'll probably be using to assign pages!

So we'd be lying if we said First Come-First Served isn't going to factor into this, but trying to soften its sting as much as possible, we created the following system for the Magic Kaito Redraw's signups:

Got it? Decide what page(s) you want ahead of time, and jot 'em down in order of priority. We've got a spreadsheet wiz on staff who can take all the aggregated results and hand at least 93% of artists one of their top-five picks! If you and someone else put the same priority on a page, though... it's back to First Come-First Served.

(Some of you are no doubt digging your personal volumes out, but try not to stress too much over exact page numbers before the actual signup(s) go up. Only the folder of pages we personally assemble for the signup will count.)

On a separate note: if you have thoughts about collaborating with someone else on your redraw, please talk it out before the signup. The only kind that'll be allowed are those who jointly sign up as a team, not artists who look for partners mid-event.

In fan works, Conan seems to have the tendency to call KID "stupid" or "stupid thief", and I literally do not know where that came from. At no point, do I recall, Conan ever calling KID that in canon; in fact, as far as I can tell, Conan regards KID as anything but stupid. I know fan works sometimes have fanons mixed in, but it's kind of interesting how fans have decided this is Conan's nickname for KID. XD (I wonder why.)

lol yeah, it's another one of these things. "stupid" is just one of these affectionate things people say. I also call my dearly beloved cat stupid and an idiot. It's really just a term of endearment

As far as fanon goes, this is the least egregious for me (and I'm very guilty of it myself, because again, I use it too)

Of course Conan knows how brilliant Kid is, but he can't just say that, can he? Then Kid might think that Conan likes him, and he can't have that!!!! They're rivals, enemies! Thy have to insult each other after all 😁

(canonically, since movies are canon now, Conan calls Kid his "destined rival", and that's not gay at all)

Fun fact...

In the original Japanese, Conan's most recurring descriptor for Kid is "Kizana" (キザな). This is a word that, depending on how much sincerity you read into it, can mean anything from suave to dashing to cheesy to pretentious.

Well, any who've stayed, your patience has not been in vain. This Remaster's only dead when I say, not a second before.

No denying it, this was a bigger gap than any of us expected or wanted. Certainly, there were some major diversions, but to be painstakingly honest: this was always my least-favorite story of Vol. 1, which made Locking In an ordeal either way. That said, being stuck with it for a year and change did help (force?) me to appreciate whole new angles I never would've considered before. It's probably still not going to top anyone's list of best, or most-memorable, or most-coherent... but beneath it all may well beat one of Gosho's most ambitious scripts, with villain to match.

So set your compass and batten your hatches for Kaito's second too-wild-for-TV adventure, out in the billowing blues of Okinawa. Who knows, maybe Kaizoku-Ō ni, kare wa naru!

It's done.

In the beginning, we had a dream: to show Ekoda's prince of thieves, Gosho Aoyama's favorite son, all the love and talent that four-eyed little smartass in Beika can get without asking. Like so many dreams, its path was neither short nor easy; things waxed and waned and, at least once or twice, might've fizzled out altogether before that first interest check even went up.

But we believed, and you believed, and whatever pits and bumps came along the way, all of us worked it through. No phantom thief could ask for a better assemblage of artists, or a better community.

Most zine blogs (I'm told) were even quieter than this between recruitment and release... But we're much closer to the latter than the former now, and anyway what kind of love letter to Kaito(u) doesn't at least try to keep the party going?

Last week we ran a little poll on the server, asking what everyone thought was the 1412 tune. It was, to say the least, fascinating—much too fascinating to keep cooped up on a private server.

Hey, everyone. Been a while since you heard from us, hasn't it? Some of you might even be wondering if this show of ours ever got off the ground...

Wonder no longer, because the Redraw server is live, packed with some of the best artists you've ever heard of (and not a few you haven't!). Come Fall, you'll have a front-row seat to a cross-creator cornucopia like no other, as only manga's Prince of Thieves deserves!

But let's take the clock back a little. As all true 1412ologists know, the charming Mr. Kuroba had a birthday on the 21st—and one of our artists took it on herself to host not one, not two, but five communal whiteboards in his honor! If this is your first time hearing about the whole deal, we'll give you the short and sweet of it: we're recruiting artists to recreate the entire first volume of Magic Kaito! Each person who joins gets a page (or maybe two!) and then we put the whole thing together to make a tapestry of over a hundred artstyles in a single volume.

A lot of people have already signed up, and we want to keep the momentum going! Better hop on quick before the slots are all full!

The Redraw officially launches on June 15, and we want as many of you as possible settled-in before then, so don't anyone go whale-watching, cave-diving, or joining Greenpeace!

Please respond as soon as possible--if you don't respond by June 20 your page may get reassigned to someone else!

If any scheduling curveballs come up, please let us know as soon as possible. The more warning we get, the more chance of something being worked out for everyone!

Now, life being life, we couldn't give everyone their first pick. But we tried our damnedest, and you'll know your assigned page as soon as you get that invite. We hope you'll have fun with it no matter what, but if you really can't live with it, don't be shy to say so.
