Adrian’s writing career began with short science fiction novels. He created worlds of aliens, adventure, and gadgets so innovative that it’s hard to believe he was only 19 when he wrote his first bestseller. However, after becoming a father, balancing work and family life stunted his creative flow.
There were times when he’d sit at his computer for hours, just staring at the blank screen. Whenever he started typing, he would quickly see the flaws in his writing and end up deleting everything he had written that day. Even his plot outlines were scrapped almost as soon as they were on paper.
Adding to this, the need to divide his time between work and caring for his son left him with little opportunity to seek out inspiration. At least in his younger days, he could create his own adventures by going out on the town.
But everything changed when you came into his life.
Adrian’s son absolutely adores you and doesn’t spend a second away from you, leaving Adrian with enough time to develop new ideas for the story he’d been struggling to write for almost a year. When he sits down in his home office now, he hears the muffled giggles of you and Charlie playing in the living room. It warms his heart to see his son finally bringing down his walls and bonding with someone other than his father.
Not only that, but you also take care of Adrian’s needs. When you’re not spending time with his son, you’re doing chores around the house to lighten Adrian’s workload. The tea you bring him while he’s working helps him calm down when the frustration of writer’s block sets in. When he enters the living room after hours at his desk, he melts into the comfortable environment you’ve created. Extra pillows wait for him on the couch, and the scent of a maple candle makes the air smell like a crisp fall day. When you all sit down to enjoy the dinner you’ve tirelessly prepared, he can’t help but admire all your hard work. He wants to ask you about your day and why you’re being so nice to him, especially since you don’t have to. Your job description only entails caring for his son, yet you go above and beyond—leaving his favorite snack on his desk without a word, organizing his scattered writing supplies, folding his laundry with care, even adding an extra pair of socks he didn’t realize he needed.
It’s in these thoughtful gestures—the way you quietly hum as you tidy up or the way you anticipate his needs before he does—that Adrian begins to see you as more than just someone who helps with his son. You’ve seamlessly blended into his life, making the house feel like a home, and with each passing day, he finds himself thinking of you less as a helper and more as someone he could come to rely on—someone he might even dare to call his own.
A few months into your stay with the family, he starts to see you as a member of it. This domesticity lulls Adrian into the delusion that you specifically fit the role of the mother of his child and… his wife.
Adrian knows your rightful place is with him, but he’s not foolish enough to act on it—yet. He understands that you only treat him so kindly because it’s your job, with the hefty salary and free room as bonuses. While he has his own strategy for wooing you in the background (I’ll tell you about that some other time), he needs an outlet for his pent-up emotions.
One day, as he sits in front of his computer, unable to focus on anything but thoughts of you, every bit of dialogue he imagines for a love scene transforms into fantasies of the two of you.
This leads to some good writing, but it’s too out of character for the world he’s trying to build. Eventually, he says "screw it" and opens a new blank document.
He wants to balance his trademark fantasy world-building with his own fantasies and desires surrounding you. So, he creates a story about an orc maid who lusts after her handsome elvish master.
Of course, he didn’t make you an orc because he thinks you resemble one. No, compared to him, you’re a frail thing he could easily manhandle every which way he pleases. To him, you embody resilience, much like the orcs in his world—unyielding, powerful, and unstoppable when you set your mind to something.
Orcs are also known for their dominating personalities, and he has a deep desire for you to take control in the bedroom.

You’re gasping for air, trying to comprehend what just happened. The large hands that were gripping you so tightly are now just his small, childlike ones. But you could have sworn… you could have sworn the figure behind you was something else entirely—something monstrous, with limbs far too long and a presence far too overwhelming.
As you try to piece together what’s real, your breath comes in uneven gasps. Your mind races, struggling to make sense of the lingering fear. The room spins, and you stutter, trying to find the words.
“What… what the hell was that? Lucas… what…” But the words won’t come out, your voice failing you as your heart thunders in your chest.
Lucas tilts his head slightly, his expression unreadable. “What’s wrong, Mother? Did you have a nightmare?”
His voice is calm, innocent, but the question hangs in the air like a loaded gun. You stare at him, still trembling, your mind replaying the moments before you woke. The figure, the voice, the suffocating fear—all of it feels too real to be a dream. Yet here is Lucas, looking as he always does, though somehow different in the darkness.
You want to ask him, to demand answers, but the words are stuck in your throat. Instead, all you can do is nod numbly, hoping that if you just agree, if you just play along, the real nightmare will eventually end.

“You said you’d call me after work, but you never did. I’ve been up, waiting.”

Your eyes begin to adjust to the darkness as you stare into your dimly lit bedroom. Based on Henri’s breathing, you know you won’t be sleeping anytime soon. You sit up in bed and flick on the lamp beside you.
“That’s what you said last time,” he says, his voice rising. “You keep doing this. You promise you’ll work with me to make this long-distance thing work, but you never actually try.”
“That’s not true,” you try to interject.
“We said we’d call each other every day, but it feels like I’m the only one who actually wants to talk,” he continues, ignoring you. “Is it so hard to call me on your breaks? You mean to tell me there’s absolutely no time for me between your classes and work?”
“Henri, stop. You know it’s midterms and I’m spending all my extra time studying,” you reply, your voice growing tense. The tiredness is slipping away. “I’m trying my best to balance everything, and your constant badgering is making it harder. Can’t you understand I’m going through a lot right now?”
“Well, I’m going through a lot more!” he yells, his voice cracking. The line goes silent for a few uncomfortable moments. You’re too stunned to respond. When you finally hear something, it’s soft sniffling.
“...Henri?” you ask hesitantly.
“I just miss you so much,” he finally says, his voice quivering. “Since you left, all I can think about is you. When will I hear from you again? When will I see you? Even at work, all I can focus on is you. I just want you to reciprocate even a little. Just a five-minute call to tell me you’re okay. Just to say how much I miss you. Is that so hard?”
You can tell he’s crying now. There are soft hiccups, and the way he sniffles makes it clear tears are continuing to fall.

It’s thanks to this lull of domesticity that he begins to imagine the three of them as an actual family.
Adrian already sees his darling as his wife and the mother of his son. So if she tries to go out and live her best life, he’ll hold her job over her head. Insinuating that if she chooses to pursue such endeavors she may end up without a job (and home as darling is a live in au pair). All that darling needs to do is stay home and look after her family!
Henri and his darling met at a local bar in his small town. She was just visiting her grandparents for the summer before returning to the city to finish up college. Henri found her cute so he chose to spark up a convo with her and get her a drink here and there. After darling accepted his offer to her tour guide of the town, they practically became inseparable. By the end of summer, it’s clear that Henri is willing to follow darling to the ends of the earth for her love. They’re soulmates after all! Even though the two are by no certain terms dating….
Elio met his darling by chance at an art show for undiscovered artists. He bought her painting by chance along with a handful of others. He didn’t really pay attention to what he picked out. Though after darling personally comes up to thank him in the most meek way possible, he falls in love.
