Defeated | Chapter 6

After hearing everyone’s answers, Lilith’s lip twitched into a frown and her brow furrowed.

“You imbeciles…”

Lilith sighs as she pulls on the rim of her hat to hide the shock and disappointment drawn on her face.

“Fine, grow, be yourselves, whatever! But don’t you understand what you can do with this kind of power? That you could–”

“Enough.”

Silence immediately spreads about the conference hall; even Lilith seems somewhat stunned by Theo’s sudden outburst. All attention is directed to the host who had been still the entire time– did he even move it all until now?

“I think it’s time to give up, Lilith. It’s clear that you have failed to get anyone on board with this, right? Right.”

Theo lifts his arms up over the table and to the sides of him to make a grand sweeping gesture to everyone in the room.

“How disheartening. We could have achieved time travel together! You were all certainly worthy in overcoming convergence and defying the odds that have always guaranteed you to be dead by this very day.”

His arms drop and he leans back into his chair, crossing one leg over the other.

“But that’s okay. It’s made me realise something: I don’t need a partner.”

The host’s eyes now gaze directly at Lilith, her demeanor having changed to one of mixed emotion: disgust, surprise, but most of all something deeper than that. Theo’s words have clearly dawned on her what he means.

“After going through this with you so many times, I think I can take over now. You were a good researcher collecting all this data and masterminding this fateful experiment. I hold no regrets in recruiting you to pursue this time travelling frontier dream I’ve had nor do I lament solely providing you with all the funding that you wouldn’t have managed to get elsewhere.”

“Alas, if you’re no longer useful to me, you’re now an enemy. I have to defeat my enemies to be victorious, but I’m not sure how to silence you… well, there is one way.”

Search For The Miracle Cure || Mastermind Execution

“Well, well, well! It seems like they’re verbally holding you responsible for numerous deaths that happened, and not just in this timeline. That means nothing short of an execution would suffice! Correct? Correct!”

“Cassius you deceitful, conniving parasite! You were planning this, weren’t you!? Had a whole execution set up for me regardless of what happened I bet! I’ll find out! If not here in this timeline, then in another! I’ll find out! I’ll find out and you’re going to pay for this betrayal! You hear me!? HOW DARE YOU BACKSTAB ME! I’ll get get! I’LL GET YOU! I’LL–”

Before Lilith can protest further, Theo is swift in pointing his cane towards the wall opposite the door they had come from. The wall quickly shifts out of place to reveal a pitch black darkness that makes whatever lies beyond it impossible to decipher– just as it had done for the prior executions. From it comes a shackle shooting out like a bullet and latching around Lilith, quickly pulling her inside. As quickly as it had happened, the wall returns to its place as if there was nothing ever there to begin with. Behind Theo, part of the wall opens up and a large screen comes out. It flickers briefly before setting into a scene…

Lilith is dropped into a jungle like area, after getting off the ground she clutches her stomach in pain.  Beneath her feet is a piece of paper showing the location of ingredients she needs to gather for a miracle drug that will cure her ‘illness’.  She scratches her head in confusion but attempts to traverse the jungle nonetheless.

The first ingredient is guarded by a variety of snakes, due to Lilith’s experience with snakes she’s able to carefully traverse them.  However, one of the snakes is startled and bites her ankle. Fortunately for Lilith she recognizes the snake as non-venomous and grabs the first ingredient without serious harm.

Farewell | Chapter 6

Unlike the other executions, the screen doesn’t retract back into the wall. It stays put in its position but offers nothing to display: only the absolute blackness of a turned off monitor.

It is then that Theo examines the looks on their faces. He cuts in just as some of the players– no, participants begin to comment.

“I’m sure you have some rather harsh words to say to me, Cassius, but it matters not. If you aren’t about to judge my character, then you’re probably curious as to what happens next. After all, you did just watch as I executed Miss Ophio.”

He laughs.

“Congratulations! You’ve uncovered mysteries and survived longer than the brilliant Agaricus! Do you feel victorious? Like you’ve defeated some super villain?”

Theo sits back down in his chair and crosses his hands over the table, a slight frown forming on his face. 

“Arséne, Cygne, Maestro, Miss Carmine, Nines, Schrödinger, you six almost made it. Because of the way this experiment was conducted, the choices made this time had changed your fate. So much has happened differently, so much so that the time leaping machine wasn’t even completed. With the state it’s in right now memories can’t be sent back into the past. Same can be said for the one that was so rudely destroyed just now.”

Sighing, he stands back up and walks around to get behind the throne-like chair. It’s pushed in with ease.

“All big changes. Drastic changes! The decisions this time around even resulted in me losing a valuable partner! Now I’ll have to figure this all out on top of hiding under the radar.”

“But I can certainly make that easier. I know I said you had changed the fates that left you otherwise dead, but perhaps this was the path that was always meant to be. After all, all six of you will take your final breaths shortly.”

Death Closes In | Chapter 6

Try as they might, the door doesn’t open. 

There’s nothing else in the conference hall except for what’s always been there and what they had brought with them: evidence in the form of folders, documents, and some broken contraption. All that is useless, and patting down Theo results in finding nothing to be used either.

97… 96…

95 seconds left before Conundrum Estate explodes. Everything that’s happened to them, everything they’ve been through, all the memories and experiences they have would disappear in just over a minute and a half.

In fact, it seemed like the end had already begun. The sounds of muffled explosions going off accompanied by the very room they were in shaking was all they could sense. Each rumble, each explosion – both seemed to reverberate more vigorously, more loudly, and heightened the sense of dread of their imminent demise. If they themselves were not afflicted by tremors, the earth itself seemed to make up for that courageousness.

Or perhaps it wasn’t courage. Perhaps it was instead futility – the calm that comes with giving up because what else could they do? What was the point of studying time travel if in the aftermath of the eleventh hour, time was not under their will but instead their executioner?

Had they really gone through all this hardship and faced so much adversity, apparently over and over again, just for it to end this way?

Were all these sacrifices for nothing? Was that all they achieved? Nothing?

D.A.T.A. | Chapter 6

Once they’ve reached the top and come up on solid ground, the sound of chopping blades is above their heads.

“The helicopter already moved! We’re out of time!”

“Run as far as you can, as fast as you can! Ten seconds left!”

All ten of them rush into the fields and towards the trees away from where they had just come from. They run, and they run, but time is short and quickly fleeting. In a quick moment, time is up.

KA-BOOM

A massive force from behind them sends them all forward and to the ground. Some even taste a bit of the earth. Though they may be dirty, the moments immediately following that are not filled with complaint or groans.

Instead it is silent.

They are enveloped in it, an otherworldly sense of peace or dread, before the world picks itself up and regains its color with the sound of an agent shouting out above everyone.

“Is everyone okay? We made it… we’ve made it!”

The agents have already gotten back up and are now helping Adonis, Alcides, Cora, Llywelyn, Max, and Odette get back to their feet. They even ask each of them whether they’ve sustained any serious injury from all the mayhem and commotion. Fortune had smiled upon them– all six were as safe as one could be given the circumstances. Looking towards the sky, they now see a helicopter returning and preparing to land.

The noise from the blades of the chopper make conversation a useless endeavor, so they instead look back towards the hell they were once trapped in.

Conundrum Estate… despite being on fire and parts of it being blown off, it’s still holding up pretty well even now. Using some imagination for what once was, the estate is a stunning sight from the outside. It’s definitely a home only the extremely wealthy could afford while sitting on the edge of a forest on one side and empty fields to the other with trees littered here and there. There’s not a hint of society in sight. It’s picturesque and somehow lonely.

Once the helicopter lands, everyone soon discovers there are actually two helicopters.

“Let us go somewhere safe before we explain to you everything that’s happened and what you may have missed. Please hop aboard this one.”

As they go to board the nearest helicopter, they can’t help but here loud, maniac cackling from the other helicopter. Turning to see who could be laughing at a time like this, they see–

The Tale of Conundrum Estate Draws to a Close

[  ♪ ♪ ♪ ]

And thus, the survivors were all taken to D.A.T.A headquarters. Just as the agents had explained on the chopper, they were each separated and questioned about their experiences at Conundrum Estate.

In return, the survivors were assured that their loved ones were safe and were currently being monitored from afar as a safety precaution. They were also made aware of how long they had been missing, that some of them had been gone longer then others. 

For those curious about what happened to Cassius Conundrus, the survivors were told that he has been detained and will receive his due punishment– but for them not to worry about it now that the authorities have him in custody.

Now, the six that made it through all that despair are gathered in a waiting room, patiently passing time until they are released when an agent walks in–

“Hello. Thank you for your cooperation. Worry not, you’ll no longer have to worry about any of this time business. As stated during your questioning, we require that you not speak word of anything that happened. The knowledge you each have can be dangerous. This means anything in regard to Conundrum Estate, what you know about time travel research, or about D.A.T.A. Of course, you’ll be free to contact us for any reason you see fit.”

His brows furrow, but he smiles.

“You’re all so brave. And the rest of your lives are awaiting you. We’ll take each of you home now. ”

Not Level Headed

It’s evident that the recent Aggregate Gambit was different then the rest. First, there was the added twist to this one. Theo had informed each contestant that they were linked to a partner, and the partner was someone they knew outside the estate. Second, this round resulted with everyone being poisoned. How that happened? Well, that’s just another mystery within the walls of the estate.

On the third night after the Aggregate Gambit, just after 2:10AM, Schrödinger first goes to a room where they know a few people are located. After informing Agaricus, Cygne, and Orion on what they had just witnessed upon entering the parlour, the four go to gather the five remaining members of the estate.

“A body’s been discovered in the parlour!”

“Wake up! Something’s happened!”

Because there were four people going about finding the others, the nine of them were gathered rather quickly. Additionally, the nine being gathered made it very clear who would lie just beyond that parlour door. In the last case they had found a body in this very room, but this one is different. Unlike last time, this one is very much dead…

His little innuendos at this point are probably regarded as a joke by almost everyone but he’s not going to stop them from coming! After all would he really be the Arsène everyone knows and loves if he didn’t try to flirt each time he met up with anyone in this estate except for a few select elder individuals?

“Heh, I wonder if you’re saying that because you’re jealous of my silver tongue or because you want it exclusively on yourself. Let me say right now though that I wouldn’t mind if that were to be the case. You’re just a few years my elder, and who knows, maybe it’s my fantasy to use it on a more experienced and mature woman~!”

While it’s true that he very rarely let out sentimental messages like those out, he still had developed fondness for the few people in here who he’d regard as a friend, and even then he’s talked at least once with everyone whose alive thus far and maintained a positive relationship with most of them except for maybe Maestro and Twelve.

Still, those feelings of caring for their safety remained there, lodged deep within his heart. The kiss certainly caught him by surprise! But while he was stunned for a few seconds, he just laughs it off and returns it with his own… Except he goes for a quick, brief kiss not lasting more than two seconds on her lips.

“C’mon now, if you’re going to try and tease me at least put your soul into it! But I do wonder just exactly what you mean by that. Do you have a surprise ready for me when we get out of here, Agaricus~?”

“Like my jealously would keep you from using that tongue on anyone else.  Well for words that least.  I certainly hope you’re not using your tongue on the others.”  

She looked like she was going to pout if he even entertained the idea.  Though the thought of him entertaining her had her quiet for a few seconds as she tried to think of a proper response.  

“Well, there are a lot of young bucks out there that would prefer someone with experience.  What makes you think you’re anything special hmm?”

It was nice to catch him off guard for once, she was so confident that she didn’t expect him to react with a kiss right back her on the lips.  She pouted, couldn’t she get an upper hand on him at least once?

“Just how far do you want me to go?  Do you want me to just leap into your arms and tackle you to the ground?”  

Honestly, that sounds like something he’d want to do.  She’d not really in the mood for that right now.  

“A surprise?  Well... I can’t say I’ll have a surprise or anything ready for you if we got out.  Isn’t my lasting company enough of a reward for you?”

“Desperate huh? Well I wouldn’t exactly say I’m desperate, but I wouldn’t be lying when I say mushrooms are some of my favorite foods to eat. Especially when they’re fresh and filled with attitude. I just want us to have a little fun. You’ve gone from being flustered to returning my flirting after all. I only want you as much as you want me, and that’s a scientific fact. Opposites do attract after all~.”

Seems he’s really going to chase this to the very end huh! But then again their friendship has been like this since they met. Arsène is mostly shocked that she hasn’t yet shot him down or beaten him up considering how stern she tends to be with everyone else.

“Well, you’re right but I still don’t want you to push yourself past the point of exhaustion and fatigue. You’re still someone special, you quickly became my friend and one of my trusted allies in here Agaricus. I haven’t had either of those things in years so I’m just… A lame worrywart…”

He sighs before offering a melancholic smile.

“But if you say you can pull through, then I trust you will. You’re strong. Let’s get through this whole thing together, alright?”

“You and your little innuendos... I suppose it has been quite the experience that I’ve evolved from getting extremely flustered to being able to tolerate and even laugh at them.  I just wonder... what would the others think of you if they found out about our little ‘fun’?  I personally don’t care but I think your sweet talking wouldn’t work as well if they thought you were juggling around relationships like daggers.”

She’s no fool, Arsene's silver tongue has probably been put to good use on more than just her.  Maybe she’s worried that it would dull out if he ended getting too attached or committed.  But was that a good or a bad thing?

“Oh...”  

She seems taken aback by Arsene’s sudden tone shift.  Usually, he’s not like this.

 “If it sets your mind at ease then I’ll take a break just so you won’t worry so much about me.  And... know that I’m glad to be your friend and ally as well.”

She leans in to kiss him on the cheek.

“And don’t worry, I have no intentions of keeling over anytime soon.  I’d love to see that we make it through this to the end.  Nothing would make me happier.”

“Well, there are probably drugs out there that can inhibit sleep.  Why do you think caffeine is so popular?  Still, to have an effect this strong would have to be something extremely concentrated or just long lasting but I’ve never heard of such a thing.  Yet here we are, sleepless…”

She jabs Arsene in his abs.  

“You’re the one who said that they were mostly for show didn’t you?  Better stars doing pushups if you want to drag me back down to earth.”

She’s silent at first when Arsene propositions her but then laughs a little.  

“That would only make me more exhausted I’m sure.  If that was somehow the cure then… well I’d be very disappointed in Theo for making such an intimate cure.”  

Really whoever heard of a cure to poison with something so scandalous?

At the thought of controlling though Agaricus frowned and looked up to Arsene a little confused.  

“Like a mind-controlling poison?  Sure some of the poisons are mind altering but mind controlling sounds like a few steps far into the future.  The human brain is a complex thing… if we could control it with some simple toxins I think some people would’ve done it already.”

While caffeine is definitely something that does aid in keeping one awake, Arsène has drank so much of it that its anti-sleeping effects no longer affect him. It just sort of serves him as a reminder to not fall asleep. He didn’t think there was anything that could even keep someone awake for so long. Jeez, so that means that for the following days six people are going to be completely useless.

“Are you sure you want me to drag you down to earth and not to the nearest bed instead? I’m sure that’s something the both of us would enjoy, behind that grump exterior is a very naughty girl, I’m sure of that~.”

Arsène himself didn’t even know if that would be the cure to anything but hey, maybe in a hedonistic world it might be. Thankfully this is not that world. That world is whatever cursed timeline Arsène and Nines talk in.

“Uh, well, no, not like that. I meant it more like… The Placebo Effect. They give us a drug that shows effects for one or maybe two days, but since our brains are wired to make us believe these effects are going to really last for five to six days due to what Theo told us, our bodies just… Continued showing these effects even though technically we are okay? Heh, yeah you’re right it’s a stupid theory. Sorry to waste your golden brain, miss finely-aged shroom~.”

“Well you’re certainly allowed to try Arsene.  I have a feeling I’m not going to be getting any sort of progress for the rest of the night anyway.  Who knows, maybe the dopamine rush will force me to fall asleep.”

She yawns once again as she talks with her eyes closed.  

“I’m the naughty one hmm?  I think you’re the one that’s made more proposals than I have.  Perhaps you’re getting a little desperate?”  

If they were going to play this game, then she was going to have fun picking at Arsene the same was he did to her.

As for the medical questions.  Well there was less fun it those conversations.

“I suppose it’s possible that a Placebo Effect could be taking place.  But it would be hard to convince ourselves that we weren't suffering after two whole days of feeling like shit.  And worst of all I doubt anyone would want to test the potency of the poison and wait the whole five days to see whether or not they would die from it.”  

That’s probably the worst part about it, that there isn’t even any real threat but the perception that the poisoned would die would inevitably lead someone into dire action.

“Well my brain isn’t going to waste I can assure you that.  I’m used to stress and sleeplessness... just not for this long is all.”

Things are never going to be easy for them in this estate are they? But at least this time it’s not crippling paranoia and anxiety or unimaginable blinding anger. Just, restlessness… Still just as bad, but at least that means none of them are going to be attacking anyone considering they’ll be far too tired to attack anyone or… Well, to fight back…

“If only, but… I can’t make sense of this. I’m not a Toxicologist, but I’ve never heard of any poisons who are capable of inducing such effects on others… Unless– no, I’m just overthinking it again. That’d be impossible.”

Sighing, he cracks open a smile followed by a wink.

“Strong huh? Well you did look at my physique not long ago. I’m sure you can answer that question yourself…”

“… But maybe you just need a good, private time at night with me to fall back asleep, if you catch my drift, I’m no butler but I can probably serve you reeeeaaaally well~! For real though, Agaricus, do you think it’d be possible that… Instead of being poisoned, they’re instead somehow… Controlling us..?”

“You won’t die. I know you won’t. You’re far too smart and too strong and excessively grumpy. Can’t have the resident medic losing to some poison. If you do die though I’ll just have to revive you and ensure you never reach the light. You’ll only die over MY dead body.”

Seems like Arsène really is against the idea of her dying! Unlike his usual, playful self though, this time his words came out firm and unwavering, almost as if he wasn’t telling her she wouldn’t die but demanding her to not die. She’s his friend and he’s going to ensure that nothing bad will happen to her even if he has to risk his life to do so! There’s been enough death in this estate and he’s not going to let anyone else die if he can help it.

After this he stayed quiet to listen to the many symptoms she’s feeling. Exhaustion, fatigue and overall malaise due to sleep deprivation… That’s not good. Going without sleeping for long negatively affects the brain and can even cause psychosomatic illusions if one goes without sleeping for too long. Though it sounds so simple, the look of distress on his face expresses how worried he suddenly is for everyone else here who was poisoned.

Rather than say anything back he just instead pushes his chair closer to hers, wrapped an arm around Agaricus’ shoulders and pulled her closer so her head rests against his shoulder.

“In that case just rest! You may not be able to sleep, but you’ve figured out what’s happening with you. Sleeping isn’t the only way to regain energy. Just rest, relax as best as you can. I already told you I will take care of you. We’ll get out of here Agaricus, just endure this for a while longer please. You’re our strong mushroom lady, if anyone here can overcome this it’s you.”

He is going to take a mental note to constantly carry six pillows with himself from now on, one for every person who was affected. Hopefully his theory is right and TWELVE manages to catch some Z’s though.

"If only being grumpy would stop the poison flowing in my veins.”  

If it were that easy near everyone would self-cure themselves.  

“Someone sure sounds protective, I can only hope that you’re strong enough to pull me back from whatever light is pulling me over.”  

Was it presumptuous that she’d be going to heaven?  Who knows, but she doesn’t seem all that bothered by it now that Arsene’s chatting her up.

“Perhaps so but damn if I wish I could get some sleep though...”  

She closed her eyes for a second, but it was clear she wasn’t sleeping or trying to more so than rest her eyes in general.  

“Does this mean that I’ve got my own personal butler here in the estate?”  

This could be fun.

He seems a little tired with that response, as he gives Agaricus a small shrug of his shoulders.

“Mm, hopefully we’re having the same problems– otherwise, I’d be concerned by the idea of there being a variety of poisons given to us to say the least.”

God, he hoped not.

“Though since we’re both still up…” 

He trails off for a moment, before shaking his head from side to side lightly, almost as if he was shaking off that line of thought from his mind.

“…Well, either way, it’s all good if you seem grumpy– I’ve had my fair share of being around beautiful women who seem a little grumpy. I’m not all so bothered by it as a result– but well, it’s always been more of a delight than a bother, really.”

Thanks Retriever.

“…How are you doing with the poison aside from being grumpy? This is your first time, right?”

“I assume that if you’re up and tired as me that you’re having the same problem.  So we’re probably both dealing with the same poison I bet.”  

She paused as she smirked slightly.  

“Heh... you’re starting to sound a little like Arsene with all that flirting.  Be a little careful about that, I don’t think he’s the possessive type but you never know.”  

She had to admit that she was enjoying having people call her beautiful, even if it came with the tagline of being grumpy.  That she was used to after all.

“First time with the poison yes, I don’t feel ill exactly.  But the exhaustion is starting to catch up with me.  I’m used to long nights but even then Iw as allowed to take a brief nap... but this is torture for me.”  

She sighs as she rubs her bracelet.  

“I figure that at the very least now I can feel its effects and know what it feels like.  Before I could only speculate but... well nothing like self-trials right?”

Seven people had been poisoned in this round of the Aggregate Gambit, that’s definitely nothing to scoff at! He was equally worried for everyone, of course, but right now there was someone who he really wanted to speak to while in here. Last time they talk it was about apples and pears and more casual flirting between the two of them, but this time he wanted to know from her more than anyone else how it felt to be on the receiving end of this punishment.

It took him around 10 minutes total to search for Agaricus, knocking on her suite and looking up in other places where he thought she’d be like the Spa and Pool and the Library before finally finding her in the Study. He expected her to be in a far more sour mood but this just seemed like normal Agaricus so far! Well… Here’s to hoping things will go alright! And hey if nothing else works? Well he can maybe lift up her spirits with a round of Hot Shots!

Quickly, he walks over to take a seat besides her, his stupid smile resting in his stupid face as usual.

“Every night is as good as fine wine whenever I’m by your side, you know this already though don’t you? You might be a poisonous mushroom now but that won’t stop me from wanting to be close to you~.”

Still the same Arsène as ever.

“But… I still want to know how you’re feeling. I… Kind of used you in the last Aggregate Gambit. I’m sorry Agaricus. It wasn’t my best decision, so I at least want to make sure you’re okay and take care of you while you’re in this state.”

Agarius let out a deep sigh as Arsene started off with his typical flirting words.  Well, it wasn’t as if it were anything new but maybe being poisoned had just soured her mood just slightly.  

“I appreciate the sweet words... though it’s not going to do much for my inevitable death.”  

She bit her lip as she spoke her pencil continuing to move on paper as she looked down a little mournfully.  “Well, at least I’ll be surrounded by at least one person I like if it comes down to it.”  Her hand pauses for a moment, her as the ominous presence of death had sent a shiver down her spine.

“If you want the whole spectrum of feelings I’ve written them down already.  But I suppose telling you will save you the time of having to read it all.”  

She swiveled in her seat to face Arsene.  

“I’m exhausted, mentally and physically but that’s not because of the poison but rather a byproduct of its effects.  I can’t get any sleep...”  

She closes her eyes and then opens them up slowly.  

“I’ve tried... but it’s like I’m just laying down in my bed with my eyes closed and I’m not actually sleeping.  As a result, I’ve been getting more and more fatigued just doing small things, my eyes flutter open and shut, sometimes I just black out for a few seconds and find myself face down on the floor or by a wall...”  

She could go on and on but she figured that Arsene got the point.

“Well if you want to burden yourself with guilt I have a feeling there’s not much I can do about it.  We sort of just had a mix of terrible things happen, two unknown numbers and TWELVE forcing an ultimatum just made things difficult for all of us.  You tried to make the best out of a bad situation and you just made the wrong call.  It happens, we move on.  Maybe next time not get distracted by petty squabbles.”  

Really she had her own reasons for thinking everything went wrong but she couldn’t do anything about that now could she.

“If you really want to take care of me though... all you have to do is throw me a pillow whenever it looks like I’m going to collapse onto the ground.”

Self Diagnoses|| Agaricus|| Closed @ Arsene

Well, it had happened, she had gotten poisoned and now she was reeling in the effects.  There was some good to it at least, the first being that the asshat TWELVE would be suffering with her.  But perhaps, more importantly, it would give her a glimpse as to what the poison actually did, and how it affected everyone.  Before she could only speculate based on their behavior and how they would tell her, but now... she was her own experiment for that nature.

She had seated herself down in the study, writing down all her feelings and trying to be as detailed as possible with what was going through her head.

Still... that was four hours ago, and she was still at it.  She was writing theories, practical explanations, her mood, pains, mental and physical changes if anyone didn’t know any better she as performing a self-diagnoses as her own doctor.

Her head turned as she saw the door open.  

“Hmm... good evening Arsene.”  

She said yawning slightly and rubbing the edges of her eyes.  

“Enjoying the night I take it?”

Hey I’m Grump! || Agaricus|| Closed @ Retriever

Agaricus had been pacing around the courtyard for what seemed like hours.  Pondering, thinking, and otherwise having her eyes gaze up at the sky in hopes that she’d come to some sudden realization.  Yet she simply continued her walking around the courtyard frustrated.

And perhaps more obvious was the fact that she seemed far more irritable and frustrated as she tripped over the grass and nearly cursed up a storm from the resulting humiliation.

“Ungh... this is terrible, absolutely horrible, the one good thing I get out of all this and it’s already gone!”  

She huffed as she had ceased her pacing and had decided to lay down by one of the fruiting trees.

“...I see you’re still up.”

Her eyes wandered up as she noticed Retriever entering in the Courtyard and she managed to hold her tongue as he wasn’t really the cause for these frustrations to follow after all.

“Guessing that you’re having the same problems that I am huh?”

Considering that he was poisoned too it really wasn’t a surprise.  Still, he had the unfortunate ill of being poisoned twice in a row, he probably would be peeved about all that.

“Forgive me if I’m a bit grumpier than usual, I can’t... well you already know.”

“I’m a pharmaceutical researcher, I’m in charge of running medical trials and researching what potential agents might be used for creating new drugs.  Most of what I do usually involve reading through medical journals and supervising trials.  It’s surprisingly a lot more paperwork than one might expect.  Or maybe the amount you would expect.” 

 She huffs a little as she sinks into her seat a little.

“It pays well but damn if the hours aren’t hell.” 

 She closes her eyes for a moment.  

“I get more sleep here than I ever did working shifts at my old job.  But… at least there wasn’t the threat of murder.”

  Pick your poison I suppose.

“But yeah, that’s why I’m pretty knowledgeable about medicine in particular.  I’m not a doctor, or a nurse, but I could probably figure out what all the poisons were doing if I had the proper machinery and tools to investigate it.”

  She shrugs.

“Not much help without my equipment though.  Just theories… but who knows.  Maybe there’ll be a medical bay or something in this crazy estate.”  

“Ah! That explains it then.”

Carmine clasps her hands together with a smile. A pharmaceutical researcher, huh? Sounded like a complicated job. She didn’t know all that went into researching and running medical trials for new drugs but it sounded like pretty hard work.

“I can only imagine. If I had to sit around doing paperwork all day I think I’d start to go a little stir crazy after a while.”

Thank god she didn’t have to do anything like that. Instead she just gets to sit around and look pretty. Talk about lucky.

“Well regardless it counts as something, no? You seem to be one of the few people here whose actually knowledgeable about medicine. Even if you’re lacking in equipment considering half the people here seem to be getting poisoned here fairly often we’d probably be at a loss without you.”

Was that a compliment? Huh. Carmine continues to smile at the other woman politely.

“Let’s hope so, it’s not too far off to assume a place like this would have a medical bay… Too bad the only way renovations seem to actually get completed in this place is if someone drops dead.”

She runs a hand through her hair with a sigh. Pretty morbid that after each death is when a new area of the estate opens up. Talk about yikes.

"It’s certainly not a job for everyone.  I’m sure that most people hate having to sit down and do boring office work.  But hey, I had to put my education to good use and it does feel nice when a trial goes smoothly.”  

More importantly though, those figures were damn impressive when she first got the job offer.

As Miss Carmine reminds her that she’s one of the few people here with medical knowledge she shifts a little uncomfortably in her seat. 

 “I suppose that’s true, but that only makes me feel like I have to come up with some kind of miracle cure on the spot.  Or at least that’s what I think people expect of me.”

And it certainly doesn’t help that a medical bay might not be available until more people die.

“Almost makes it seem like it’s not worth it at that rate.  I guess we can’t ask for renovations to speed up either huh?”

Not like Theo would ever be so kind as to speed things along.

There’s a bit of silence before Agaricus looks back up to Miss Carmine.  

“Question, out of everyone here who do you think are the most reliable and trustworthy.  I have my own list but... well having a perspective might prevent more disasters like the last gambit.”
