In Shanky’s clothing, I’ve incorporated a lot of color & visual detailing, by way of prints or bold solids with button, stitch or color blocking details. And of course, distinct accessories. As a character, to me, Shanky said bewildering stuff way beyond his years. As most kids do. It’s bewildering as adults to listen to the truth that children speak. Shanky’s style reflects his exceptional voice in the world. He isn’t afraid to be seen or be himself or wear his heart in his pocket. He always dressed to reflect his mood. Read on to find out. 1st pic is of Shanky wearing a ‘mended’ shirt(repair job).I incorporated this shirt in-‘defects and all’,as we did small repairs, mend & wear our clothes in the #90’s. #Costumedesign is not limited to the characters,it also indicates the life & times of characters,their social strata,their ideologies with the help of details which reflect-not just a character’s personal ideology-but cultural norms as well. #yehmerifamily is an #indianwebseries set in summer of ‘98, Jaipur, India. It is Summer vacation time in the life of Harshu, a 12 yr old ‘middle child’, going onto 13. Shanky is Harshu’s best friend, philosopher & guide. Post independence India had a ‘self reliance’ policy for 40 yrs.A time Govt controlled public sector units and wrt media only AIR FM Radio,Doordarshan,DD Metro.The economic liberalisation in 1991, heralded the foray of ‘cable tv’ in India and The cable Tv act of 1995 resulted in an information boom. I grew up in the 90’s.We got cable tv only after 2001.To ‘protect us from the perils of Baywatch & Mtv. What happens when a society is transitioning economically & culturally? Our ‘fashion trends’ came much later to us compared to the world.Thus there wasn’t any uniformity in the adaptation of those trends.Compared to present day. Our fashion was cinema influenced.Small towns caught on much later compared to metropolitan cities.‘Bombay’ & ‘Delhi’ were the only two true metropolitan cities. A #90skid has seen an era of 8 toffees for ₹1.Making & mending clothes was a part of our lifestyle.Most households had sewing machines.Women even did their saree fall hemming at home! It was a #sustainableway of life as we didn’t know a disposable culture.Tier 2 cities saw a retail boom only in the mid to late 2000’s. How do you encapsulate so much information then? By incorporating details which reflect the ethos of the time. Hence the Rafoo detail. Costume Design for #Neerja a biopic based on the life of Neerja Bhanot- the 22 yr old purser aboard Pan Am 73 (1986) which was hijacked at Karachi Airport. Neerja died saving lives and was awarded the Ashok Chakra, India’s highest award for gallantry during peacetime.

The film top lines Sonam Kapoor and Shabana Azmi.
