It was amazing, she couldn’t help but think, how the thought came to mind.
Normally, being presented with such a grave threat would add another fracture in her slowly shattering glass frame. The idea of her darkest mysteries coming to light before an audience she hadn’t even had the chance to introduce herself to— it was…quite simply, terrifying. It was a stage fright unknown to man. It was undesirable and should have been something only conjured through the wildest of nightmares.
But here she was, among a myriad of panicked friends, staring at their black and white captor.
Hotaru didn’t necessarily…want to do this. The depths of her heart sang a warning song— a choir of her conscience. And the illusionist was well aware of the reception she would undergo. She knew that she was unveiling something she had tried for years to keep under wraps…
…but if it saved lives? So be it.
“Friends,” she chimed as she stepped before her classmates, smiling out at them despite it all. The faintest prick of tears bubbled at the edges of her eyelids, threatening to spill down her cheeks at any moment. “I would never ask this of you to reciprocate, but I seek to paint a better future for us all. Your decisions are yours to keep…but I think it’s best if I tell my secret here and now. If it prevents another person from dropping among our ranks? I’ll learn to live.”
The illusionist smiled once again, soaking in the confusion of her class…and likely that of the world outside their newfound prison. She was being naive, true— but Hotaru was naive, and she wasn’t wholly convinced it was a detriment.
She called it…encompassing optimism, instead. It sounded nicer.
“The secret I assume MonokumAI intends to spread in my case is…not a happy one, and I pray you would still your judgements.” She said pitifully, afraid to move her eyes away from her classmates. “…I was diagnosed with schizophrenia at the age of eleven, and it is my inspiration to pursue illusionism. I see it as…a love letter. A love letter to the piece of me that conjures up things no one else can experience. I am more than my illness, but I won’t run from it— anymore.”
She let out a low sob, brushing tears away from her face.
“I’m not ashamed…the only reason I hide it away is the fear of people who won’t take me seriously. I ask that you all remember that I am a person too. I can sense things that no one else can, and my goal in life is to introduce what I can see and hear and smell and feel to you all.” She smiled even wider. “I’m not broken. I’m not a danger to any of you. Just know that…I’m the same as you.”
She felt…like a butterfly. Her wings weighed nothing, unburdened by any threat or horror— and she was free to fly. She could stop hiding.
Hotaru Azamaku was tired of hiding. It would never help her in a city of despair. She wouldn’t run, she wouldn’t hide, she wouldn’t harm or hurt anything in this world—
Life was precious. And the Violet Firefly would do anything to make sure it wasn’t wasted.
Dimitri smiled up at the girl who spoke her secret out loud. who couldn’t be proud of someone who spilled those beans? This was a dangerous and uncertain city of which they currently were trapped in. It was hard to figure out what would happen to them all next, but Dimitri had hope that they would be ok. Especially with strong people like Hotaru around.
“You’re so strong, miss! I hope you know zis. Perhaps an inspiration amongst us all, you know? Perhaps even a leader to us all!”
Dimitri offered a small bow at the girl before him, his smile unwavering and warm. Even if things seemed dark, there were those among him who wouldn’t waver. And why should they? As fellow students, they should be there for each other, right? This was something he couldn’t help but truly believe with all of his heart. As he walked ever closer to her, Dimitri looked the girl up and down with interest.
“You’re a strong soul. I hope zat we can learn from each other, despite all of zis, you know? I just hope zat you won’t judge me too harshly either. Of course, I would never judge you. I wish for us all to stay strong together, you know? To show zis bear zat we’re stronger zan he thinks!”
“My name is Dimitri Averin, by the way. Do you want to be friends? Comrades in arms?”
