[[Investigation]] From Top to Bottom || [Etsuko]
If they had any chance of finding anything in this place, they would have to go right back to the very beginning again. Murder after murder had led to the expansion of their 'world', as Monobear had promised -- but with the watchtower's grand opening, they had reached the limits of that world. All that was left to do now was to search the places they'd already been.
Junpei hasn't set foot in the sheriff's department since the very first murder, investigating Masato's death with Miwa (and Ai, he remembers suddenly, with a slight grimace), simply because he hasn't had any reason to. The only person who regularly traffics this part of the prison is Kaori, as far as he knows, to sit in the lobby watching the movie over and over. Apart from that, it's been quiet as a ghost here -- and that means it's a good place to hide something, right?
"...Well, I hope I'm right, anyway..." he muses aloud, rubbing the back of his head as he sits down in a chair in front of one of the computers. It sure would be convenient if he managed to find something right away... but the prison isn't exactly in the habit of making things easy.
Still, dare to hope! There are lockers and drawers and such to search, too, but he's leaving them until after he tries this -- 'this' being to try turning on the computer in front of him, moving to try another if it doesn't work, until he's tested every computer in the sheriff's department. They didn't work the last time, when Miwa tried them, but at this point, everything's worth a try.

Kaori couldn’t get the last few words Nabiki had said out of her mind. Even watching the waves splashing up on deck before a shark swallowed her whole didn’t feel real. None of it did. Her body and mind was numb to the world around her as she followed the crew back up.
When Monobear collected them at the top and explained what they had to do an overwhelming rush of exhausting took over her body. Moving her arms or legs felt like they were being weighed down. As if invisible weights were strapped to her limbs.
Her tired, sad expression stared lowly at her feet. The worn brown loafers looked different then before. Kaori hadn’t even noticed how long they had been confined within the prison. Not that she was keeping track of time. What she was doing was pretending each death hadn’t happened. Just like she had sworn she wouldn’t do after remembering Haru’s own.
Tears welled up in her eyes and it took all her strength to hold her sleeve to hide her face. In silence she thought back about every student who was lost, about who she’d have to remember for the rest of her life, and cried. Masato, Kouya, Boa, Nagisa, Banri, Ryouta, Oten, Ai, Jinta, and Nabiki… Ten of them were gone from this world and pretending that they weren’t wasn’t going to bring them back.
The sound of Misaki and Junpei speaking made its way into her ears. Though she wasn’t paying attention to much of it, just their voices brought her out of it. If they weren’t letting it effect them this much… Could she really just truly let them do all the work? Being left behind in the prison was scarier than following them into the outside world. Kaori wanted to be with them all.
It took her a few moments to work up to courage to take a deep breath. Bringing both hands to her face at an alarming speed and slapping her cheeks hard. The smack of flesh hitting flesh echoed the room around her. The Perfumer faced her classmates with rosey cheeks and a genuine smile.
"I- I want to join you! Junpei-kun… Misaki-chan… I’m scared… I’m really scared… But! I know if I’m with you guys when we leave everything will work out! So…" She nodded, wiping the last few stray tears from her face.
"Let’s do this together!"
It was refreshing to see her friend finally smile again. Though it was a somewhat tired smile, she could sense Junpei’s determination. They weren’t about to let all of their classmates die in vain. It just couldn’t happen. They both shared that feeling. No matter how many times their hope had been crushed, it rose once again with the promise of escape: a life without any more killing. Misaki turned with Junpei to see if there were any others who wished to join on their (hopefully) last little escapade around the prison.
The painful-sounding slap that echoed around the room quickly and effectively brought her attention to Kaori. Ouch. Soon enough, another friendly smile was gracing the scene. Though she was clearly still very shaken and upset (as all of them were, no doubt), she seemed to at least share their enthusiasm. Listening to what she had to say, she gave them all a warm smile of her own.
"So it’s us three, then… Nakagawa-san.. Kaori-chan, we’ll get out of here together. For sure." Misaki would try her best to hold that promise. She would try her absolute best. They would all get out if it was the last thing she did. This had to end. She scanned the room outside of the elevator, trying to get an idea of where to start.
"Any thoughts?"
Before he and Misaki can continue talking, a loud, echoing smack! rises in the room, startling Junpei out of his optimistic fugue. Turning towards the source, he finds Kaori Natsume, red-cheeked but... smiling. There are still tears glittering on her cheeks, but despite that she's smiling, wanting to join them, wanting to trust them -- both of them, all of them.
An overwhelming surge of gratitude washes over him, and it's difficult to stop himself from hugging her, but he manages it -- they can save that for later, when they've escaped.
"Kaori-san-- Kaori-chan-- we're gonna make it, okay? The three of us -- the six of us -- we're gonna make it. I'm... really glad you're on board, hehe. I wouldn't wanna escape without all of my friends."
For now, work. Misaki is already thinking, and he sets his own mind to it, too. There are no new floors, now -- the only options for clues are places they've already been.
"...It's been a while since anyone thoroughly investigated the lobby and sheriff's offices, right? Maybe there's something there... but we can leave it til later, if anyone has a better idea."
At this, he looks down at Kaori, next to him. "What do you think, Kaori-chan? I think we should all agree on where to go, since this is so important..."
It strikes him that it would probably be more efficient for them to split up and search alone, but... the prospect of actual teamwork, with none of them having to worry about whether someone with them is a murderer or anything like that, is an appealing one to him. And if something really did happen outside... they're going to need all the teamwork they can get to get through it.

The execution of Nabiki Kaname was painfully fresh in Misaki’s mind, leaving her speechless and frozen in place as the elevator slowly made its ascent. All of the things that happened… this whole tragedy was coming to an end at last. Or so she thought. Before even letting the remaining students take a moment to get settled, that bear spit out yet another excuse to keep them locked inside of this hellish place.
It took the botanist a few moments to process what Monokuma had just announced. For some reason, she couldn’t find it in herself to be furious. Instead, she felt tired. Tired of investigating, tired of being trapped here, and tired of watching her classmates die. Though it seemed as if the latter was at an end. She wouldn’t have to see anyone die anymore… And there was still hope for escape. All they had to do was find out who was responsible.
Even if it was going to be difficult, there was still hope. No way was she going to give up here, when they were all so close. She couldn’t let all of this struggling be for nothing. She couldn’t let all of her friends die in vain. She was going to make it out of here, she was going to meet her family again, and she was going to make sure everyone else did, too. She looked up from where she was staring at the floor towards the others.
Junpei, who was standing not too far off from her, seemed to have the same thoughts.
"Nakagawa-san, you’re completely right. We can’t stop here. I will help you look as much as I can." She stepped out of the elevator behind him, filled with hope that they will definitely be able to escape.
"We’re definitely getting out of here. If its the last thing I do. Where do you think we should start looking?"
Out of all of them (although 'all of them' is only six, now, ten of them murdered or executed or punished), Misaki is the first one to speak up in support. When he looks at her now -- shaken from the execution, but with a cautious optimism in her voice and a determination in her eyes -- she seems like an entirely different person to the shy, hesitant girl he met at the start of all this. Certainly, she's a different person to the girl with the malicious eyes int he photograph -- and that's all that matters, isn't it?
This is the Misaki he knows -- the friend he knows -- and they're going to get out together. Nobody else is going to die. He, Kaori, Miwa, Etsuko, Misaki, and Atlas are going to get out of here.
If the thought that the perpetrator could be one of them crosses his mind, he doesn't show it. Instead, for the first time in a long time -- maybe since before Oten died -- he's able to smile properly.
"Asaihara-san-- I'm glad. I'm... really glad. Let's work as hard as we can to escape this place with everyone, yeah?"
"I figure we should take it from bottom to top, since we're down here anyway -- and I don't wanna take the chance of missing anything, not when it's this important, y'know? I'll search the place as many times as it takes!"
It's... been a while since he was this motivated. A combination of the end finally being in sight and a promise of no more killing means that he can maybe, just maybe dare to hope once more. With renewed vigor in his voice, he looks at the rest of the group.
"Anyone else wanna come? I think... now especially, we should work as a team. There's no reason for us not to trust each other any more, right?"

In truth, after seeing what Monobear had in store for the executions before, it hadn't been likely that Nabiki would survive her own. But still, he had dared to hope. Like all the other times he had dared to hope in this place, though, it had come to nothing, and the navigator had been swallowed underneath the waves -- both figuratively and literally.
Only two thoughts had comforted him as the elevator rose; first, that Nabiki was now with Ai, whose death had sucked all the life out of her, for a time. Second... that the six of them were going to go free. He, Miwa, Atlas, Misaki, Kaori, and Etsuko... they were going to go free.
As the doors open with a soft chime and Monobear stands before them, Junpei dares to hope.
And, like all the other times he dares to hope in this place, it comes to nothing. Another caveat, another condition. No more killing, yes, but... they'll continue to live here until they find out who's responsible for this; a task more difficult and monumental than any investigation they've been faced with before.
For a moment -- for a teetering, awful moment -- he's close to giving up, to succumbing to prison life -- the easy option, the easy way out. The thought passes as quickly as it came; his family are out there. Everyone else has people out there waiting for them, too.
Just a little more... just a little longer!
"I... I don't know about anyone else," he begins, looking at the other occupants of the elevator, "But... I don't want to spend even one more night in this place, yeah? So if anyone else wants to investigate, count me in, okay?"
Stepping out into the prison once more, he turns back to face them, with a weak smile. "...Everyone else wants to go home just as badly, right? So... there's no way we can give up here."
[Excecution] Nautical Nightmare
Nabiki Kaname, the blackened- furrowed her brow. She saluted to her classmates, giving one last sad smile before being chained and pulled out of the room. The air was thick with sadness and regret, most of them had wanted to avoid another execution all together. But sadly, that wasn’t going to be the case. For the rest of them to leave one more student had to die.
Navy Blue curtains pulled back, revealing a wooden set of a large ship. Waves pushed against the base of the ship moving it harshly in random directions. Nabiki found herself chained to the steering wheel of the boat, with only enough room to pivot her left wrist. With her free hand she followed a map, steadying the boat with her left. Setting her eyes on a way out, the Naval navigator began to take course.
Around the ship, Monobears rush to prepare for the storm ahead of them. Thunder roared through the air as rain poured down onto the deck. Pieces of wood cracked and bloated against the rough swirls, floating off into the sea. The poor girl found herself sweating heavily as she held the wheel tightly. Stumbling over herself, she threw the map out of her way and gripped the wheel with all her might.
The naval-navigator began heading in a different direction with the assumption that the one she was on, would lead to her ultimate demise. Like the rest of the killers, she’d still end up dead. She spun the wheel, shifting the ship north. Her eyes swirled as the boat moved against the rough waves and deeper into the storm. The Monobears continued to rush around, preparing life boats and jackets for the passengers of the ship. Little Mono-mothers, mono-fathers, and mono-children threw on life jackets and boarded the life boats.
When finally- a stroke of sheer luck shined above them. The horrible rainstorm ahead reached its end and light glittered above them. The waves crashing against the boat slowed down, making it easier for Nabiki to hold the wheel with one hand. She let out a sigh of relief, wiping the sweat from her brow. When she finally had a chance to breath, the Navigator reached for the map on the floor that was just out of reach.
She stretched her arms as far as she could, but to no avail. When she finally lifted her head, she was seconds away from slamming into a giant monobear shaped iceburg. Her face paled as her eyes swirled with despair. This was the true eye of the storm coming to an end. As the boat collided into the giant mount of ice, Nabiki fell backwards pulling the wheel with her. The sides of the boats grazed the ice, allowing more water to fill up inside the ship.
With nothing left to lose, Nabiki began to pull at the chain and with enough force she pulled the wheel right off. With the ship’s steering wheel in hand, Nabiki rushed to the deck of the ship. In search of any life jackets or boats left behind by the passengers. Water continued to sink the dying ship, and Nabiki had no where else to turn. Climbing on top of a stray piece of sturdy wood she floated off into the open sea.
Her body became blue from the oncoming wintery water around her. Her eyes blinked slowly and when all hope was finally lost… A giant mechanical mono-shark rushed out of the water, devouring her whole.
[Body Discovery] Stairway to Heaven
This was a very professional investigation, and they were professionally putting substances in their mouths, just like the professionals do. She listens intently to Junpei’s analysis before nodding in agreement. “Right.”
Was Jinta trying to live up to his old reputation as a two-timing spicy Papacita? Honestly, anything was game at this point. This case had so many things out of place with nary a connecting clue in sight. Etsuko wondered if they’d be able to even figure it out. Her eyes slide to Jinta’s body again, lying lifeless and broken. As a lady of the church she had seen her fair share of death, it’s true, but it is always a jarring experience.
Her gaze shifts back to the swimmer as he suggests their next destination.
"The kitchen, ah…" Her words cut short, a hand reaches upwards to place fingers to her temple. All this was starting to pulse to her cranium.
"…Nakagawa-kun, I’m deeply sorry, I’m afraid I might pass out again around all those different smells in the kitchen." There was always something mysterious stinking it up. “Might we go somewhere else…”
She really hated to be a burden or disagreeable, but passing out would just make her more of a dead weight. She didn’t want that. She needed to help.
"Pass out...?"
"A-ah, that wouldn't be good...! Somewhere else is fine, Reiki-san, don't worry! Let's go to the... um..."
That's where Junpei hits a wall. The kitchen had seemed like the natural way to go, but now that he's being forced to choose another option, his mind goes blank. Jinta's cell, maybe...? But that's on the floor below, and it wouldn't be all that efficient a way to investigate. Upstairs...? That's possible, too, but he's pretty sure there are already people up there, now, so it wouldn't work either...
Then... then somewhere on this floor? That would leave the infirmary, the workroom, the empty cellblock, and the library... none of which particularly stand out to him. So, leaving it up to fate, he quietly does an incredibly professional, incredibly investigative eenie-meenie-miney-mo in his head, landing on--
"...The library! At least it'll be quiet there, right? No weird smells or anything, so it should be okay!"
With an uncertain smile at Etsuko, he turns and walks down the hall to the library, entering the room. He hasn't been here much at all... so it almost feels unfamiliar to the diver. Unsure of where to begin, he takes a quick look around the room before he begins searching the bookshelves, trusting Etsuko to find somewhere to look, too.
[Task 6] The Crow's Nest || [Nabiki]
Technically speaking, he probably shouldn't be up here at all. Monobear never gives them a specified time for how long their investigations are supposed to take, and they've never entered a trial without enough evidence yet, but... that doesn't mean there can't be a first time. Especially now, when freedom is so close at hand for everyone.
One more trial, and everyone will go free. Everyone but one person.
With that in mind, he should be investigating harder than ever, right? Even if he's alone right now, that doesn't mean he should be sitting around not doing anything, right...?! Sure, he wasn't made for detective work, but he's managed to get okay at it out of necessity, right? Watching the others find clues and piece them together, learning from everyone... the thought that it might actually be fun if it wasn't so horrible and real is a hard one to swallow.
But it is for real -- his feet carried him here, to the watchtower, and the scenery from the windows reminds him of that much once again, the barren landscape sending a familiar shiver down Junpei's spine. That landscape is what they're all investigating for the chance to escape to, right? For the chance that their family and friends and people that are waiting for them -- that they might be out there, still. Manami, Sachiko, Yuki, Chiyo.
"...Aah, I can't waste any more time here--!"
He raises his hands to his own face, turning away from the window and slapping himself lightly on the cheeks to bring himself out of the fugue. Energized (at least, a little) he heads for the stairs, but before he can take the first step, another face appears below him.
"--Ah, Kaname-san...! I was just... "
"...Taking a break, I guess... I can't get anything about what happened this time to make sense in my head.... But that's not really new for me, yeah? Have you had any more luck?"
[Body Discovery] Stairway to Heaven
She folds the note carefully, keeping it softly in her fingertips. It was precious evidence, after all. Listening to Junpei, nodding at certain intervals that seemed appropriate. He seems so… tired, honestly. It was sad. She wishes she could tel him to go rest, leave the rest to her, but now more than ever is when they needed each other’s company and intellect.
"Mm, as much as I wish it were not, suspicion may have driven him to seek out some sort of defense. You are very bright, Nakagawa-kun."
The scrapes of a smile press on her expression, hoping to perhaps give some comfort, even if just a little. Her face turns away now, thinking about what to do next.
"This liquid…" She comments, staring vacantly as she descends to kneel. Soaked all over in some kind of strange yellow liquid — of course, Etsuko immediately thinks what anyone would. But… just to make sure, she touches her finger to Jinta’s wet hair and proceeds to put it in her mouth.
"…" Moments pass, Etsuko contemplates.
…And turns to Junpei, reaching her finger out. "What does this taste like to you?"
"Eh-?"
The compliment by the nun catches him off guard, and he looks at her with wide eyes, blinking slowly. It seems out of place for the situation they're in, but... knowing Etsuko as he does-- is she trying to cheer him up?
...Maybe he was letting just how much this is all getting to him show more than he thought he was. Either way... he appreciates her attempt, and he manages to smile at her in return. Even during a murder investigation, even when one of their number is going to be leaving them after the next trial... they can still worry about their friends. That thought alone lifts his spirits, some.
"Ah... thank you, Reiki-san. It means a lot to hear you say... that..."
"...Um, what are you...?"
Before he can finish his sentence, Etsuko's already finished what she's doing; taking some of the liquid covering Jinta on her finger and putting it in her mouth, even before smelling it or anything. To be honest... if the liquid's what it looks like, he's absolutely not keen on the idea of tasting it himself. But Etsuko seems more thoughtful than disgusted, and it's for the sake of Katsuragi-san, so after a tentative moment he reaches out with his own finger to swipe the remaining liquid off Etsuko's, before putting it to his tongue.
"--Ah, it's--"
"...Kind of...spicy...? It tastes sort of like it should be in Indian food... why is something like this covering Katsuragi-san?"
With everything they learn, this case makes less and less sense... what exactly happened last night?
"...Well... if it's spicy, either Katsuragi-san or the killer had to have gone to the kitchen, right...? Do you think we should look there next?"
