Masaharu votes for Kami, however the fuck he does that.
Chapter 1 || shut the fuck up usamaeda || Masaharu [@ Haruaki + Kami]
“Usami-san… please, don’t.”
(Why were there so many goddamn weirdos in this place.)
His gaze shifted back to Kami, tone softening.
"Okurimono-san, I’m sorry, but based on the evidence, you’re our primary suspect right now. There are several non-invasive ways that we can check your eyepatch, and we won’t do them if you won’t agree, but… You need to understand that, as things stand right now, things aren’t looking very good for you. If you have anything that can prove your innocence, please let us know.”
Until then, he cast his vote.
Chapter 1 || cuphead blease download || Masaharu [@ Everyone, Mari]
Masaharu arrived in the theatre room (courtroom?) with a notebook full of what he felt was absolute bullshit. Scribbles about the location of the body, the size of evidence, everything empirical and nothing concretely leading to a killer.
What could he say? He was a scientist. And scientists collected data through observation. So he remained silent throughout the first portion of the farce of a trial, eyes darting from person to person, and resisted the urge to write down even more notes.
But scientists also posited theories based on those facts, so he had to speak up eventually.
“Ah, if we’re doing introductions, my name is Masaharu Nakai. I study cephalopods. Octopuses, cuttlefish, that sort of thing. Let’s… do our best to solve this.”
Concise enough, he figured.
After that, there was a rather long gap of time before Masaharu’s face displayed any state of being other than stoic when someone made the brilliant decision to fling their regalia across the room.
"Mari — !”
Suddenly he was at her side, hand hovering over her back. His gaze flickered over to the golden object lying on the ground, and in a moment of brilliant mental addition, he darted over to pick it up and bring it back to her.
(… Didn’t that look familiar?)
"Are you all right? Be careful with that, for God’s sake…”
His brows were knitted together as he pursed his lips, the perfect image of a parent half-scolding and half-comforting their child. The image, though, was interrupted when a thought occurred to him, and he stood up.
"I’d like to elaborate on the pools of blood Lynn-san mentioned. Like she said, there were two in the courtyard, about an arm’s length from each other. One was much smaller and less, ah, lethal-seeming than the other. What’s interesting to me is that it seems Nishimura-san sustained injuries from the knife on his ribs and on his arm. If there was a struggle, it would probably make more sense for the blood to be less concentrated in pools and more in a series of spatters, wouldn’t it?
Lee-san alluded to the state of Nishimura-san’s body seeming unnatural for a murder involving a struggle, and I agree. His hat, mask, and scarf were bloody, but placed neatly next to his body. And then there’s the white rose petal folded into the scarf.”
"Based on all of that… My sense is that Nishimura-san didn’t put up much of a fight during the confrontation, and that he may have even been a willing participant. I also think the killer tampered with Nishimura-san’s corpse after the fact.”
He exhaled and pushed his glasses back up the bridge of his nose, where they had slowly slid down during his mini-speech.
"I’m willing to go around to do checks for injuries and the like, but I think we should have multiple people doing so as well. But also, just keep in mind… Kuroki-san said it herself. I think we’ve all seen what we typically wear around here, and, well… I don’t think the petal’s insignificant.”
Come on, dude, just namedrop already. Everyone can see you doing eye emojis at a certain winemaker.
Chapter 1 || work is the hell and i die || Masaharu [@ motive + body]
In his dream, he bought two tickets. He filled out two sets of documents — triple, even, because the pains he had to take for her seemed insurmountable. There were two passports, and when the plane took off, there were two people gazing at the carpet of clouds below, eyes wide with the wonder at the oceans they would cross and the new life they would lead together. For the first time, she seemed… really, really happy.
When he woke up, he was alone, with only the pang of regret filling out his chest to keep him company.
Masaharu lay there for a while, a faint stinging behind his eyes as Toka’s laughter echoed in his ears, before finally trudging over to the ballroom to hear whatever nonsense the demonoid had in store for them today.
(… Kill and make his dream permanent, huh?)
“Well, if this situation is what happens when one of us makes a deal with the devil, one can only imagine what would happen if someone else made another.”
If nobody had killed yet, he felt it was still likely that nobody would kill now. Masaharu went to get breakfast and prepare for the next phase of Toka’s taunting.
Flash forward a little while later, and here Masaharu was, entering the ballroom once again, but to a far more grisly scene.
"Oh, Jesus Christ —”
The reaction was instinctive when he entered, and his hand flew to his mouth. He closed his eyes, took a deep breath…
And reopened them to the same sight.
Another deep breath. His other hand tightened around the notebook he was carrying. Right. He knew from the mocking word “sacrifice” that this was probably what he was going to be dealing with today. He’d brought it for a reason.
Shaking his head, Masaharu got to work.

Chapter 1 || everything happens so much || Masaharu [@ The Bullshit, Sachiko]
shslwannahavefun:
She could have been standing there crying for five minutes or five hours, for all Sachiko knew- because that was just where she was right now, completely stuck in this sense of upset panic that had settled over her mind and was insisting on making it replay everything that had just happened over and over.
(Someone was dead- a kid was actually properly properly dead and okay they’d talked about this situation but- having it actually happen-)
Which was why it was so, so much of a relief when someone else’s voice broke through it- even if she did likely look surprised as all hell, head whipping up from where it had ducked somewhat and sending her twintails bouncing as she turned to look at the newcomer with widened eyes- someone she hadn’t actually talked to yet, which was still enough to put a spark of energy behind her words even through continued tears.
Even if she did just launch straight into the heart of the matter.
“H-he’s, um… he’s really d-dead, isn’t he? I-I’ve never seen- all he did w-was break something but we’re… b-but we’ve all got th-the same stuff, haven’t we? A-and we’re actually going to- we’re stuck here l-like he was too or something, b-but… what do we e-even do now-!”
This did absolutely nothing to answer his question, rather pose a more desperate one of her own, but Sachiko didn’t seem to realise before a hiccup started a fresh round of tears.
They didn’t get buried in her hands now though, that action being traded in favour of… looking to Masaharu’s eyes with the rather desperate but hopeful expression of a crying child starting to wonder if a parent might say they’re not in as much trouble as they thought they were.
Oh boy.
Oh boy, indeed.
Masaharu opened his mouth partway, even though he had nothing to say yet.
(What do we even do now?)
(Good question, actually.)
Still, he had approached her, and he felt compelled to say something at least a little more reassuring than “I don’t know”. He tried to find gaps to speak between her sobs, keeping his voice level. Projecting the ultimate image of calm authority.
"... We find a way out, ultimately.”
thanks
"In the meantime, of course, we’ll have to be careful of... whatever may happen next. Protect our... regalia, I think they’re called. Honestly, I don’t know if we have enough information now to come up with a plan of action...
“But I firmly believe we can find an exit. And I’ll remain committed to that until this place is long behind us.”
His expression softened.
"... By the way, I don’t believe we’ve met. I’m Masaharu Nakai. What’s your name?”
Granted, it would be kind of hard for him to not know her name, but it was still polite to ask.
Chapter 1 || everything happens so much || Masaharu [@ The Bullshit, Sachiko]
Of course Masaharu followed the noise. It was the first sign of change in the time since they’d arrived — however many hours that had been, god, he couldn’t even tell — so he followed, and he listened, and he watched, and —
“Oh, god.”
There were no authoritative, reassuring words. Somebody died right in front of him, and all that he could do was stand there as his chest turned to ice.
(At least now he’d gotten his explanation for why they were here.)
Everything after that was a blur. Toka’s explanation. Arriving at Edel’s castle. The girl in the mirror reappearing. Masaharu strained his ears and did his best to keep up, but his mind’s eye kept creeping back to how that boy with the umbrella looked in his final moments
Akihito Toujo. No use pretending he didn’t know who he was. Akihito Toujo was, for all intents and purposes, dead.
(… Fucking hell.)
The sound of choked sobbing jolted Masaharu out of his musings, and, without thinking, he approached the source. A blonde girl in a white dress who seemed to be… really having a rough go of it.
“… Excuse me, is there… anything I can do to help?”
His voice was calm, as though he was trying not to let the others present know he was talking.
im gonna draw the whole roster as dragons at this rate
Prologue || celestial limbo || Masaharu [@ Mari]
shslamericano:
“Weeell, it could have been juuust Nak-kun, but NakNak-kun sounds, like, a lot cuter!”
Two syllables sounded better than one! Duuuh. Well, excluding the honorific of course.
“It’s { N-I-C-E } to meet you too! Except, like, you’re kiiinda shorter than what Mari thought you’d be.”
She gestured, using a hand to compare the gap between their heights. There was a pause before a cheeky grin spread across her face.
“{ J-K }! { J-K }! Mari’s the one who’s tooooo { T-A-L-L } here. Hufufu! Anyway, what are you, like, doing here then, NakNak-kun? Admiring the view? That’s what Mari’s doing! It’s sooo pretty here! Mari would rather sleep out here than with all the bunk beds. Not that Mari doesn’t like bunk beds or anything. They can be suuuper { F-U-N }, but like, y’know, it’s different.”
Less stifling. Yeah.
What’s writing? Can you eat it?
This gigantic bubbly girl.
(He was never going to get rid of NakNak-kun, was he.)
"Ah... well, I was going to take a look at the room just past this one —”
Masaharu gestured at the, like, barely visible door leading to the library.
"— but I suppose it couldn’t hurt to take a moment to look around here again. It’s... beautiful.”
Eloquent, dude.
He walked over to one of the walls and gently rapped on the glass. tamp tamp
"Is this some sort of projection...”
More to himself than anything else.
I. Lily || Ayame || Prologue || [Closed: Masaharu]
shsltakenoko:
{cw: discussion of oceans}
If Masaharu was nervous, Ayame either didn’t notice or comment. Rather, she had fixated her full attention on something, and was not going to stop until she had what she set out to. After all, it was rare that she felt a true connection to something, and when she was she fully intended to pursue the feeling.
Despite this potentially leading to further discomfort, as Ayame was leaning rather close to her companion. Personal space, much?
“Oh, wonderful, yes. I have heard that they are some of the most intelligent creatures on this planet. In fact, I find it remarkable that we know less about the depths of the oceans and what lives there than space. But that is incredible, they cannot see colour and yet they are masters at using it to their environment? But how do they communicate?”
She leaned forward ever so slightly, curiously.
“Ah, wonderful, so you discovered a system that enables you to….. talk to them? So what have you learned, or is that confidential? Have they told you their fears, desires? Or are they animals, driven by instinct? That sounds fascinating to learn about, should you ever meet me again after this, I would love to see how a cephalopod reacts… How it all works.”
file this under “cam is also interested about octopuses”
Masaharu leaned back in response to Ayame invading his Personal Space Square. Wimp.
"Ah, well, octopuses are...”
He was just in the middle of detailing how cuttlefish communicate when he realized that this was neither the time nor the place for such dissertations discussions. They were in some kind of weird place with no memory of arriving there and no idea what to do next. And here he was talking about cephalopods.
"... Actually, Yoshida-san, could we get back to this some other time? I’d like to take a look around this place and see if there’s a way to get out, if that’s all right.”
free him
Natural Predator | Kabu | ATTN: Masaharu
hokkaidowerewolf:
Kabu avoided eye contact for a bit.
“What, y’ think because I’mma werewolf that mean I live in a cave an shit?” He said, a bit sarcastically.
But at least he promised not to take any of his food. Although… Humans are an animal that is known to lie… So he wasn’t sure how much he actually trusted that.
“And nah, I don’t. M’dad used t’ cook wi’ fire n stuff. But I was nev’r allowed t’ mess wi’ that kinda stuff. Too ‘dangerous’ or whatever…”
He looked off to the side again, avoiding eye contact. He didn’t really like thinking about stuff going on back at home. He didn’t want to get all emotional, especially not in front of some human. He was a scary wolf, not a big crybaby.
Masaharu wasn’t sure how to respond to the cave comment, because that was something he had actually considered. called the fuck out
He nodded a little as Kabu went on, mentally logging everything the other said. So his father was permitted to use fire... Did that mean there was some sort of hierarchy? There was probably a joke to be made here, but since this is a SFW tungle roleplay, it didn’t happen.
"I see... Fire can be dangerous if you don’t know what you’re doing. Especially in an area with a lot of trees...”
But Kabu seemed uncomfortable with the current direction the conversation was going, so he shifted gears.
“So, is this the first time you’ve been around this many humans before?”
Not like he was 100% sure that would make Kabu any less uncomfortable, though.
Prologue || celestial limbo || Masaharu [@ Mari]
shslamericano:
As much flak as their whole dealio has been given, Mari didn’t think it was so bad when rooms such as this one made up for it. There were stars gleaming all about, almost as if she could stretch her hands out and touch liquid night. Since she couldn’t quuuiiite do that, Mari settled for tracing her fingers along the glass, inches away from simply plastering her face up against it.
Words weren’t never her strong suit. Not in the slightest. No matter what descriptions she could come up with, she’d never be able to weave together anything worthy for the books. ‘Pretty’ was more than enough for her though. If only her family were here to see it! Sure, she loved the city and all, but it dampened seeing such a neat sight. Maybe she could suggest a trip out! Some place that had a clear view of the stars. It would have been a change that’d be appreciated. She was sure of that!
She held her index fingers and thumbs out into a rectangular shape, peering through her makeshift camera. Click! Her phone was dead, so it wasn’t like she could snap any shots. What she could do was commit this to memory to ramble about when she got back home. Unless she got distracted by other things like—
Mari aimed her gaze as well as her ‘camera’ towards whoever called her name. Oh! This was the dude who told everyone to chill out earlier on, but more importantly, if she racked her brain, she was faaiiiirly certain that she recognized him from elsewhere. Maaaybe? She dropped her hands to her side, already skipping her way over to the other.
It was when she was in closer proximity that it hit her.
“Fish-kun! I mean, like, NakNak-kun! That’s so you, riiiight?”
She supposed sense of smell really did link up with memory. Huuuuh. Weird. That still didn’t stop her grin.
“You’re, like, Ma-nii’s friend! Totally! Since, y’know, like, Ma-nii doesn’t { R-L-Y } have that maaany pals, it kiiiinda sticks when he mentions them! He does it in this vaaague way though. I think he was, like, asking about good coffee brands to drink at home one day, which was suuuper weird since he doesn’t care about that type of thing. Mi-chan is always getting on his case about how { S-W-E-E-T } he makes his coffee to the point it doesn’t, like, even taste like it. So, that’s how Mari knows { U }!”
She happily rambled on from her recollection. Friends were one thing she could never forget! Not to mention, friends of her siblings weren’t something she could forget either. The latter was much easier to keep track of when she could practically count them on her fingers. Wait. It nearly slipped her brain, so distracted was she from what she originally planned to say.
“It’s not ‘Kanou-san’! Mari is, like, Mari!”
Priorities.
Masaharu kinda just. Stood there. Listening to Mari ramble. He’d seen her in pictures, of course, and he had heard about her from her older brother, but meeting her in the flesh was.
Well.
Exuberance always took him off guard when it came from people who weren’t, like, four.
(God, he felt so old.)
"... NakNak-kun? Can’t say I’ve ever heard that nickname before.”
Still, his tone was light, and he shifted into a smile.
"Alright... Mari. It’s good to finally meet you, based on what I’ve heard from Kumagai-san.”
He looked up at Mari, and it was then that he realized how much taller than him she was. Jesus. This was going to be interesting. help i forgot how to write
Prologue || celestial limbo || Masaharu [@ Mari]
Being honest, Masaharu would choose an aquarium visit over stargazing any day.
But what if the aquarium was full of stars?
He’d come back here only to investigate the room he neglected to check earlier, he told himself. Still, when he opened the door to that star-filled spectacle, he found his breath taken from him all over again. They glittered and drifted all around him like he was floating in space, all alone —
Wait. No. He wasn’t alone.
“Kanou-san?”
Off to a great start, dude.
I. Lily || Ayame || Prologue || [Closed: Masaharu]
shsltakenoko:
Ayame’s eye-ames weren’t opening anytime soon, it seemed like. No, she simply continued with her face turned to Masaharu, unmoving, unblinking. She was almost statueesque, like an effegy carved from stone.
Still, she listened intently and was paying attention as far as she could tell. This entire thing was so interesting. Learning about others? Woah.
“That sounds absolutely incredible. So you would be able to talk to others and learn about what they have to offer? And collect information on their passions, and treat them kindly and be able to engage in peer review? Ah, should we find a way out of this situation, I would adore to continue attending. Perhaps they could even teach me something, but that is unlikely. I am a master.”
Her eyebrows quirked as he shared his story. At least, bits of it. Or something, yeah.
“…Ah, so it is shared through your father. That is absolutely wonderful, having someone to hand down knowledge collected over centuries of research. Yes, I have heard that they are very intelligent… is it true they remember who comes to feed them, and can blend in to their environments? They are very… well, I feel myself connected, even if I have never seen one in person. Have you made many advancements, Nakai-san? Tell me.”
She leaned in, her smile revealing perfect, glittering teeth. also that’s relatable what is science
Masaharu could practically feel the verbal boldface screaming from the word information, and he felt a chill run down his spine. His discomfort only grew when Ayame mentioned feeling a connection to cephalopods herself, hand unconsciously making its way to the golden octopus charm in his pocket. He couldn’t help it — she was so, so similar to —
(No fair!! No spoilers this early on!!)
... Ah, she’d asked him more questions.
"Er... Yes, they’re extremely intelligent. And their camouflage skills are peerless — cuttlefish have the ability to expand and contract their skin cells to match their environment in pitch darkness, and all without having the ability to see color themselves... Cephalopods use it to blend in, to communicate — it’s incredible to watch, really —”
He caught himself, remembering she’d asked him something else. Talking about himself wasn’t his favorite thing to do, but it did concern his passion, so...
"It’s interesting, because studying camouflage in octopuses is actually what got me accepted to Hope’s Peak. I helped developed a way for humans to use a dummy octopus with camouflage-changing technology in order to communicate with other octopuses. It’s all rudimentary communication, of course, but they seem to understand basic yes or no questions... And it’s being adapted for other cephalopods as well. I just chose to focus on octopuses at first because, well... I like them.”
He ended on a bit of an embarrassed note. Nerd.
Natural Predator | Kabu | ATTN: Masaharu
hokkaidowerewolf:
As Masaharu gestured toward the jerky piled up on Kabu’s bed, he immediately got a little defensive. He moved his body closer the bed in an attempt to form a makeshift wall between Masaharu and his food supply.
“Y’, I got i’ from th’ kitchen.” He said, a bit defensively.
He felt a little silly acting that way. Although, he was a little too used to people coming and taking things that he enjoyed.
“There’s nothin’ in there that you’d enjoy, though, human.” He said, with a little smirk. “No steamed lobster or chicken fettuccine in there. Only jerky and soup. But th’ jerky’s all mine, besides yer teeth weren’ built t’ be able to eat i; properly anyway. So y’ better get used t’ eatin’ cold soup.”
Trying to avoid gloating around humans wasn’t exactly something he’d easily get used to.
Kabu’s protectiveness over his food supply did not go unnoticed, as Masaharu essentially embodied the 👀 emoji for a solid few seconds. He didn’t know much about wolf behavior, but this was undoubtedly something animalistic.
"Don’t worry, I won’t take any of it.”
Trying to sound non-threatening.
"So it’s only nonperishables, hm... And I haven’t seen anything like a stovetop anywhere, either. Maybe if we got enough candles together... There’s certainly no shortage of those around... Do you have experience cooking with only fire, Kabu-san?”
Masaharu sure as hell didn’t.

shsltakenoko:
Ayame, internally, was about ready to tap her foot and examine her non-existent watch, but her external body language remained serene. Hands folded nearly in front of her, and eyes closed tightly.
“Yes, we could. And I would appreciate cooperation in finding out what is the matter with this place. Because there are weird matters happening.”
She remained there, frozen as if a statue and poised to continue on and ask as much as she could manage in order to gather enough information to form guesses then.
“You own your own apartment? And yes… I remember going about my business, and then I am here. Do you believe this is a kidnapping plot or something along those lines? Why would someone even kidnap us? I want to figure these issues out.”
A pause. Smile.
“That sounds interesting. Indeed, I was only accepted to Hope’s Peak recently, so as a result I have memories of my acceptance letter and not much else. But tell me, Nakai-san, why would I like it? I find it interesting from what I hear, being the study of living organisms… it draws to my own talent, as both are involved with the cultivation of living beings. How did you come about your own talent? What do you do?”
So much for not knowing about what Masaharu spoke of. Ayame smiled wide.
The longer they spoke, the more unnerved Masaharu became by Ayame’s utter refusal to open her eyes.
... Well, eye, since the other was concealed behind her hair.
(And, were those... two sets of eyebrows... ?)
(God, he was going to need a drink after this.)
"I think you’d like it because, not only are you allowed to essentially spend as much time as you want honing your talent, but you also have immediate access to a whole lot of other interesting people with their own passions and... information, I suppose? Since they’re working with their own talents, you have the opportunity to learn a lot about them while they’re in their element.
His words were chosen carefully, and he pursed his lips as she dug deeper into his personal life. How much should he reveal...
"As for me, ever since I was a kid, I spent a lot of time at the aquarium my father worked at. I thought cephalopods were interesting because their way of interacting with the world around them was so different from humans, but also similar in that it spoke to some sort of hidden intelligence that not even I have been able to completely grasp... I’ve heard people compare them to real-life aliens. I observe them, care for them, work with them, try to figure out how they work.”
“azura you have no idea how science works do you” listen
