There’s a wave of quiet fear that settles in when the outer bands of a hurricane transition into the stronger, more relentless winds, and the house just goes dark. The hums and whirs stop, the air goes stale, the neighborhood outside disappears, and the only visible light is generated by the storm surrounding you. The eerie silence within the house lies in stark contrast to the howling winds and whipping branches of the trees outside. Hurricane Ida sounded different than past storms. Rather than a howl, it was an unwavering freight train passing over and around us for nearly four hours. The sunlit sky was an odd color at times. The trees were thrashing in both directions simultaneously. Every creak and moan made itself known in a way that you wondered if something was threatening to give way or be thrown inside. The quiet within the house was unsettling in comparison. It’s been 10 days since Hurricane Ida, and so many people are still without power, food, shelter, or aid. If you are able to help in the recovery, please do so: @mutualaidlouisiana (at New Orleans, Louisiana) https://www.instagram.com/p/CTlDujSlWZI/?utm_medium=tumblr
It’s not often you see palm trees down after a hurricane. Usually I find myself looking to those as the symbol of consistency and strength post-hurricane. Hurricane Ida has shown us lots of downed palm trees. 📸 Taken on a quick drive post-Ida. Too many hazards in the street and not enough gas for us to idle and get out. Gusts of wind and bits of rain today as we wait for #HurricaneIda to roll in. She’s slow moving. I’m nervous for what’s to come. (at New Orleans, Louisiana) https://www.instagram.com/p/CTLTpdFFD_S/?utm_medium=tumblr

Passed this house on a walk. I’ve seen many spiral staircases in the backs of houses and even the interiors, leading to a loft bedroom, but this is the first I’ve seen in the center of a porch. It was a cool shift from the norm. (at Mid-City) https://www.instagram.com/p/CSVahMRrsuH/?utm_medium=tumblr
