Donât let me down || Self-para
âPyat, shest, sem, vosem!!â The instructor shouted sharply for about the two-hundredth time already. And with that, Maddie began. The other dancers were getting just as exhausted as she was, but that was Juilliard. Classes ran late, especially after making up for holiday breaks. She could swear that her legs were going to fall off if they werenât shown any mercy sometime soon.
âMaddison, shoulders!â she heard from behind her, immediately straightening her posture before continuing. No matter how tired she was, Maddie always worked hard. Sheâd work until she dropped to get where she wanted to be. Just as the clock read 11pm, she sighed heavily before the group started again, tired and winded, but inspired.Â
âWe are not done yet, students. Keep that energy up!â Maddie would always get nervous when it came to solos, even if they were small, which this one was. Sheâd done it a thousand times, and there was always that little pang of her heart before. But this time, it shouldâve been a warning. Just as she was about to leap into a grand jetĂ©, a cold shock of a thousand sharp knives shot up her leg before she slammed to the ground, letting out a horrifying scream.
Suddenly, Maddie was having flashbacks of the dorms. The back of her elbows burning against the rough carpet as she looked up at Alisa, watching as the girl snapped her ankle with a simple stomp. It was the same feeling, but this time it was worse. She always heard that rebreaking a bone was excruciating, but she never thought it would be like this. Maddieâs instructor rushed over to her, exclaiming in Russian as one of the other students ran to her phone to call an ambulance.Â
In a bit of shock, Maddie laid in the ambulance, tears streaming down her pale cheeks as she lifted her phone to her ear, listening to it ring before hearing Astridâs voicemail greeting, causing her to choke on a sob. âAstrid,â she whimpered after the beep. âIâm on my way to New York Presbyterian. M-my ankle broke again. Please call me. I love you..â
