Story time:
Customer who always asks inappropriate questions to female employees comes to the register with a friend of his. They are purchasing a hamster from us and have been helped by another employee. As I’m ringing them up, the inappropriate man leans in and asks:
“Hey… Is it offensive to ask someone how tall they are?”
Employee in question is a tall female, and so I know exactly to whom he’s referring. I say not generally, but it’s not really relevant, and some people are self conscious about their height, so why would you ask?
He goes on to say they asked how tall she was and she “Got real fucking offended”. His friend then chimed in that he had put his hand on her back, and she shook him off quickly, and he thought that was rude as well.
The following conversation ensued:
Me: “Well, some people don’t want to be touched. You shouldn’t touch someone if they don’t want you to.”
1st guy: “Yeah, but it was just a friendly-”
Me: “I mean that doesn’t really matter. You don’t just touch someone who doesn’t want to be touched.”
2nd guy: “I just put my hand friendly on her back, it doesn’t mean anything”
Me: “Maybe not, but again some people don’t want to be touched.”
Y'all, then the first guy came back with “Well don’t work in sales then, right? Hahaha.”
Me: “No. That shouldn’t matter. Employees are not toys for you to touch whenever you want to. Do. Not. Touch. Someone. Who. Does. Not. Want. To. Be. Touched.”
1st guy, again, now WITH THE AUDACITY TO BE OFFENDED: “MAYBE SHE SHOULD WEAR A SIGN THEN THAT SAYS "DON’T FUCKING TOUCH ME”.
let this be a PSA that there are people out there, men in particular, who view stores as open season to treating employees however they please. This just spoke volumes of how this man thought he had the right to put hands on my coworker just because she was at work in a position that deals with the general public. We are not playthings. It doesn’t matter what your intentions are. You don’t touch people without their permission, and if you do and they are visibly uncomfortable, fucking apologize for it– don’t pretend like you have any right to be offended by being called out on your actions.
Keep your hands to yourself.
