U know whats crazy abt bdaddy jissues. Theres all the stuff about BJ never mentioning his parents or writing to them and the Interesting Jokes he makes about them while referring to pegs dad as ‘pa’ and the lashing out at hawkeye for having a good relationship with his dad. Theres also like everything about the way that he is. The burying and repressing and smiling. The flinching. The LYINGGGGG the projecting. Lets go back to childhood. What is it about the house you grew up in that made you the way you are. I know what it is.
AND the obsession w being a good husband and father AND the obsession with following rules and life will reward you AND the way he initially adheres to strict army policy before being opened up like a beautiful gay flower by another beautiful gay person WHILE ALSO being so mixed up in his own head about being a good husband father following rules so life will reward you strict upbringing policy that he sometimes still treats said beautiful gay person like hes a crazy slut from hell not that hell is real or that im scared of going there at all hahaha anyway.
And they did this on purpose by accident in classic american sitcom mash
You ever think about how the only reason Samuel l Jackson got into acting is because he was a radical activist and his mom got threatened that he’d end up dead so she sent him away to school to save him
Literally the FBI told her to get him out of Atlanta or they were going to murder him
UMMM???? CAN WE GET SOME ELABORATION PLEASE?????
the fbi literally threatens people fighting for racial equality with death without a trial and people still think theyre the good guys
even bigger things are happening
big things happening
we need to invent a way to explain how deep running and pervasive and subliminal racism and antiblackness is without immediately sounding like an insane conspiracy theorist
female characters are always lighter than male characters. strong characters are almost always dark. aggressive characters are almost always dark. peaceful and intelligent characters are almost always light. even amongst darker characters the lightest one is usually either the leader or the girls. dark is evil and light is good.
if you try to explain this to a white person they look at you like youre insane
briefly pursuing a career in animation radicalized me on this. So many stories from the industry about how you have to start with your character design as dark as possible, because INEVITABLY you'll get "notes" from higher-ups asking you to make them lighter.
In a class about making a pitch bible my teacher once role-played as a shitty executive with a classmate, pressing them in intentionally abrasive ways about why they made their characters diverse. He emphasized that we had to learn to defend these things, because the racism in the industry is extremely deliberate.
Ronald Wimberly's comic essay, Lighten Up, stays evergreen

Max (1992) This documentary is probably the first cinematic portrait of a trans man - one of numerous pioneering works by Monika Treut. In this work, Native American Max Wolf Valerio discusses his journey transitioning. Displaying an extraordinary capacity for self-analysis, he proudly recounts his experiences with the hormone testosterone and talks about the queer community’s hostility towards transsexuals and the adventure of becoming a heterosexual man after having been a lesbian woman.

If it’s okay I would love to hear about In Love and War thoughts?
okay okay so. i think that “in love and war” is one of the best episodes of season six and that viewing it solely as the love story between hawkeye and kyung soon is actually a very limited read of the episode. when watching that episode i think that it’s way more about hawkeye having to confront his naivete when it comes to actually recognizing himself as part of the american imperialist war machine, however unwilling a participant he is. hawkeye’s up on his good liberal soapbox from the moment he meets kyung soon, and it’s only when he sees her living conditions that his feelings begin to change and he realizes that he’s being a huge asshole to someone whose living conditions have been DIRECTLY caused by the actions of the US military
and then the naivete continues the whole time!! hawkeye is trying so hard with her, and he’s being so kind and genuine, but only an american would say without a trace of irony, “you know, you have a fantastic attitude. that you can go through all of this and still smile is wonderful. i guess nothing is all that bad unless you think it is” and THEN he romanticizes all the labour she has to do because of the war (“kyung soon, i'm touched by you. by the way you sit in a bombed-out house and make jokes in french. even by the way you yank vegetables out of the ground and carry water from a mile away”) like. hawkeye her family is suffering. everyone is suffering. this is a nightmare scenario and it’s heartbreaking that you think that taking her on a date in a bombed out building is enough to distract from that/save her/etc.
hawkeye showing up in his class A’s to kyung soon’s mom’s funeral is such a haunting/almost horrifying image. the nicest clothes he has in korea are a specific symbol of imperialism, and of course he wants to be respectful and dress nicely, but the fact that ultimate peacemonger hawkeye looks so out of place among everyone else at the funeral because he looks like a good little soldier is fucking intense
and then it ends, because it has to end, and he says, so sadly, so genuinely, “you sold the phonograph?” which breaks my heart because it shows that he’s still not entirely getting it; of course she sold the phonograph, and traded the car, and got rid of her possessions to take care of her family. of course it can’t last, and they won’t write letters, because it’s a war. and things are fucked up in a war, which is why hawkeye tells margaret that he has to let her go. beyond the obvious trauma of working in a MASH unit, he finally is starting to get the impact of the war on the personal level and how impossible and horrible it makes everything.
TL;DR “in love and war” is a great parable about how american imperialist ideology affects hawkeye and how he’s forced to confront his part in the war machine and how it impacts those he cares about
MASH keychains (and stickers) are finally up on my store!! Everyone has a different expression for their flipside, and they're all printed on plain old clear acrylic. 🙂💚
Wild how BJ was all gussied up and popped his collar and everything on his way back home to the camp probably picturing like that time he and Hawkeye were joking around and Hawkeye sometimes pretends to be a leading lady in a movie he is going to walk in and be so dashing that Hawkeye is going to exclaim and draw everyone's attention to how pretty BJ looks and he'll play along and Hawkeye will grab his hand and notice his manicure and hang onto his hand showing it around the table to everyone and then hang onto his hand while he's talking and teasing/swooning and BJ will point out that he is a pretty petunia and everyone will groan but Hawkeye might one up like Petunia? You're the whole garden today captain hunnicutt! And he'll make a space for him to sit down but tell everyone to give BJ room because he's all fancy and clean and shouldn't rub shoulders with riff raff like them but BJ will just laugh and grab Hawkeye in a pseudo hug/hand on the scruff of his neck and say like maybe some of the polish will finally rub off on you and everyone will go back to what they were doing but Hawkeye is still sitting at his shoulder taking special notice out of the corner of his eye and then when everyone starts to clear out he maybe will say like something like oh dashing captain can I take your arm and BJ will put out his arm for him to grab while they walk back to the swamp and probably throughout the rest of the night and even then next day long after the grime of the camp has crept back in and BJ has showered and gotten dirty and showered and gotten dirty and the evidence of his haircut and manicure are long gone Hawkeye will still call him a little petunia or dashing doctor or something like that anyway time to pop my collar and make my entrance can't wait to see Hawkeye's reaction what could go wrong...
it turns out its actually very easy to set up a custom search engine . so! here's the MASH transcript search engine i've always wished for!
it pulls from the transcripts on subslikescript and is hopefully a useful resource for finding out which episodes specific words/phrases/lines of dialogue are from . it helps makes it easier to locate scenes for edit making, see how often certain phrases appear in the show or just trying to remember what episode That One Thing happened in . i also recommend using quotation marks for better success when searching for phrases! like this:
inspired by @butch--dan's eternally useful spn search engine + thank you @theblob1958 for directing me to a decent transcript source :-)
So cool
Saw this on Twitter (awesome btw. PASTA!) and yapped in the replies, but I think yall might enjoy knowing this too?:
In fact, 1996 was probably right around when he first approached the director/writer to get the thing made! Kinda neat to see it was on his mind.
From what i understand, Feynman was a very charismatic and eccentric figure as well as a gifted science communicator — it’s not hard for me to understand why Alda might have been interested in him haha
(Also, as a scientist myself, I am as always so endeared by Alan Alda’s love for science/science communication!)
