briana had no idea that her co-worker was head over heels for her. sure, he’d dropped some hints here and there that he thought she was physically attractive and he never hesitated to go the extra mile for her, but he’d never openly admitted to his feelings. in fact, he’d never even asked her out on a date. besides, briana had only ever dated selfish college jocks who were rarely interested in her, but rather the physical benefits she offered them. how on earth was she supposed to pick up the signs? briana’s lips pressed together when he complimented her looks so confidently, as if she tried to suppress the smile that curled upon them. “you’re so cute.” she replied, her fingers reaching to squeeze his hand in adoration. “let’s hope so, i could never afford to fly to europe at this rate.” she added before following him inside. she frowned at the tables, which were already filled with couples and small families. “fuck, it hasn’t been this crowded since valentine’s day.” she giggled when he complimented her hair a second time. “you know what, you don’t look too bad yourself, miller.” she added casually before she turned away from him to take her first order. “what can i get you guys, tonight?”
towards the end of the night, briana sat down to have a chat with mr. johnson, an elderly man who always sat at the small table in the back corner. he came by the diner every evening to order him and his wife a strawberry ice cream. the man himself wasn’t too fond of the strawberry flavor, but it was his wife’s favorite. he was simply there to please her, he explained. the truth was, mrs. johnson had passed away nearly a decade ago and mr. johnson suffered from severe dementia. he believed that his wife was still alive. when the loving old man first started to come around the diner, briana would try to explain to him that his wife was not there anymore. she would try to explain that she was in a better place now, that she was watching over him from above. unfortunately, mr. johnson never took her honesty well. there had been days on which he’d called her names for daring to assume such nonsense. his truth was set in stone: his wife was alive, and he wouldn’t take anything else for an answer. it was tragic, really. nowadays, briana simply sat down with him whilst he chatted away happily about his wife and all the wonderful things they’d done together. it hurt less.
“you’re dressed exceptionally proper today, mr. johnson.“ briana stated as she brought a spoon-full of strawberry ice cream to her lips. mr. johnson looked down at the old suit he was wearing. “it’s my wife and I’s anniversary today. she would smack me across the head if I showed up in sweatpants or jeans. no, no, she wouldn’t like that.“ the elderly man replied. briana simply smiled at him, ‘though her eyes were clouded with the sadness that she felt for him. she turned around to offer miles a bite of the ice cream, only to find out that he was nowhere to be seen. raising an eyebrow, she got up from her chair and excused herself before she left mr. johnson’s table to go look for him. miles wasn’t normally the type to leave her by herself. when she entered the back room, she was surprised to find him standing there without his apron on. he looked distressed. angry, almost. “miles,” briana didn’t remember ever seeing him like this. she approached him carefully, tapping him on the shoulder worriedly. “are you okay?“
briana had so many different sides to her, different side to love and different sides that miles would love to figure out and love for the rest of his life. every night she would go and sit with mr. johnson no matter if she had a rough day, if she was tired form a long, hard night she made sure to sit with mr. johnson and have ice cream with him. he’ll watch from a distance at times. there were so much more to her then what people saw even more then she realize herself. miles just hopes he’s the one who gets to realize how fucking amazing she really is if she doesn’t realize it herself first.
the almost graduate was in the back in his feelings, mad at himself for waiting so long to tell briana how he really felt. he honestly just thought it was never the right time and secretly he really couldn’t here the words i’m sorry miles but... his heart would break. instead he waited and now could it be too late? he sat in the chair bent of slightly his elbows resting on his legs and his head rested in the palm of his hands when her heard someone come in. he looked up to see it was briana. he sighed slightly and shook his head. “nothing, is wrong.” he lied as he sat back in his chair and avoided eye contact with the other girl. “i’m okay, i was in my head but i’’m okay i promise.” he said getting up and walking over to her his apron. to change the topic he asked. “did you leave mr. johnson out there by himself?” he asked he with lowest of chuckle. “he might eat all the ice cream.” he placed his hand on the door knob to open the wider before we walked out.
before he walked out he asked a question. “i know your home life isn’t the best and you want to leave the first chance you get but have you ever thought about staying?”
