edit down of all the prints

i found it difficult to edit down the images much more than this at this point. i think i need to do some more research and reading to help further my project. So far however im happy with this selection i find the images portray the uniqueness and individualities of each gallery while also showing some of the similarities found. If i was able, i would definitely want to reshoot and shoot more in all three galleries as i think that would help further the project and help the quality of some of the images id reshoot.

I decided after editing down the images slightly on my computer to order prints of the images in order to be able to edit and sequence the images as a whole in person.

this shoot was done with the hasselblad with a phase one digital back.

knowing how this setting looked on film, i had an idea of what shots i wanted to get. i found the first day quite difficult, i wasnt feeling the best and therefore the shoot didnt go as planned. it was only the third time using the camera and i felt quite anxious shooting in the gallery as i wasn’t sure if they would be okay with me shooting with the hasselblad as its a much smaller space than the other two.

the second day, i felt much more confident and spent a lot longer shooting. the images i’d taken the previous day were all quite underexposed however id liked the composition on a few therefore i knew what i wanted to shoot.

The images i feel convey the gallery in a true form. i find this gallery to be a lot more colourful than the others and i find this is definitely displayed within the images and something i want to keep in mind when editing down the images and for the final selection and sequencing. For me also the building this gallery is within is important as its conected to liverpools vast history and now showcases how the city has evolved. the way the gallery has shaped itself within is another element i found very satifying and worked well within the images, therefore another element which i think is important and would work well within the final edits.

id gone with the intention of shooting the gallery in a different situation but after being there a while i decided it was better if i stuck with conveying the gallery mainly in its day to day form. While there however, i reshot a few things and took photos of the rooms which had nothing going on within.

first shoot using the hasselblad with the phase one digital back.

i was quite nervous begining this shoot as the camera is really large and i was worried theyd be an issue with me using in within the gallery. I had also never used a medium format camera before and therefore had to get the hang of shooting at the different angle and adjusting myself to the downward viewfinder.

i wasnt really happy with the images id taken in tate modern on this day, i felt anxious the whole and i felt as though some of the images were lacking in some way. However in tate britain, being a smaller space and it not being as busy i felt much more comfortable and was coming to terms with the images more. I was much happier with the images i got in tate britain. i think these images are able to convey the space in a interesting way and offer varied perspectives of the space and artworks.

I’ve managed to find one book on the tates history on amazon and ive ordered a copy. i find it quite odd that there isnt a lot of books on the tate and their past as its such a large instuition and normally galleries and museum have an expansive collection of books on their history, the building and its collection.

MP1 - submission

for the submission I’ve chosen to submit a selection of 36 black and white 6x4 prints and 12 colour 6x4 prints, along with 5 mock ups of triptychs printed onto A3 paper. For the prints i chose to do them matt with a white border as i thought glossy wouldn’t fit the style of images or the project. As of right now I‘m not entirely sure how and in what context I’d like to present my work, so i thought it would be best to be able to show an overview of the images I’m shooting to get a sense of the theme and style of the series overall. The selection of prints come from Tate Britain and Tate Modern as i only shoot in Liverpool over Christmas and was only able to get them developed at the beginning of the week. While the prints are much smaller than i think i would like to have by the end of the major project the selection shown in the first two images, i feel capture both buildings in a way i find visually stimulating the different type of imageries work well together in my opinion.

As for the triptychs i found this style of presenting worked well allowing me to show similar images together, be more playful with them and would be a suitable format if presenting in a book format. I also found by creating these triptychs it has helped me to be more critical of the photographs and see how each can work or not work together within the series, which in turn made it easier to edit down the number of prints.
