Put your lab coats on! Here comes a thinker: A retrovirus is a unique class of virus that is comprised of single-stranded RNA, instead of the more typical DNA. It’s most powerful ingredient is also it’s achilles heel. This would be the enzyme it carries known as Reverse Transcriptase. This enzyme has the ability to copy the DNA of the infected t-cell. So when the virus replicates, it creates what seems to the body as just a t-cell. This allows the virus to replicate over and over with very little the body can do to fight it. Thankfully, today’s medications have the ability to cripple the Reverse Transcriptase, blocking the virus from being able to replicate. This is why PEP is effective shortly after exposure, and also how low and undetectable viral loads are achieved. No one ever said HIV wasn’t complicated! (And that’s just it in a nutshell) KNOW HIV = NO HIV
Cute baby elephant
This concepts always blows my mind. We should all be living this way.

Very cool blog! I was in VP1 2009, pretty sure there wasn't any blog back then... Glad to get to see pictures of what you guys are up to now!
I am glad you like it! Pole about the lack of a blog then, now we're really making the effort to stay hip and cool. :)

"Tuko Pamoja" means "we are together." It is also the first portion of our motto "Tuko Pamoja Kuushinda UKIMWI" which means "We are together in the fight against HIV/AIDS." For World AIDS Day we were able to bring body paint. Every single one of the kids loved it, not to mention all of us who were able to do the actual painting. Even our Swahili Teacher / Research Olga got in on the fun. And of course we had to paint ourselves. Our friends at the Caucus for Children's Rights were able to send their traveling theater group that specializes in promoting children's rights to our World AIDS Day event. They were spectacular. Photo Credit: Nguyen Phan
