Okay so explanation time! Here are my bug justifications, my bugstifications if you will (this is going to be long):
Harry = Cicada because he loud, he proud, he wakes up after a long while and screams, he sheds, etc
Kim = ? though I like the suggestion of him being a moth, I'll probably alter his design. He definitely has that coolness and mystique of the moths in hollow knight and it fits with how harry puts him on a godly pedestal
Dora/Dolores = Moth, more specifically maybe a lunar moth? Pretty much, her innocence and the radiance have very similar vibes. Her head wreath consists of her fuzzy antennae and her wings are shaped like lungs that give off a warm glow
Insulindian Phasmid = um, they just kind of stayed the same. I do think the suggestion of them turning into a human since they were already a bug is quite funny. I think they would be a friendly character that is almost considered a false god and is mostly forgotten
Bird's Nest Roy = Fire fly/Lightning bug because of all of his lights and shiny trinkets
Garte = just a round lil dude, maybe like a roly-poly/pillbug? Mostly I went with the same reason that I think the number 9 is red, which is to say, vibes
Andre = just a spiky guy, on account of the hair ofc
Trant and Mikael = Crickets because of the incessant noise!
Alice DeMettrie = Ladybug mostly because of her red hair and I think it would be cute if she used her antennae as a radio antena
Judit = A busy bee because she do bee busy (also i forgot her wings and made her look less like a bee beecause i wanted to incorporate her lankiness shhhhhh)
Jean = Okay look, I redesigned him like fifty times and I hated them all so I settled on this grasshopper look but at first I was thinking cricket because he does make a lot of noise, be it all complaining, but then I thought maybe a horsefly (horse cop = horse fly?) but I couldn't get it right and I really fuckin HATE horseflies so I didn't want to look at reference pictures and and and I might have given up, oops. But hey, I did have enough creativity to think 'cracks in his mask to symbolize the scars' so, eh, help. Please give me bug suggestions, bug-gestations? I'll stop
Lillienne = Dragonfly or Damsel fly because of her affinity for water. Instead of a saber she keeps a fishhook on her hip and has colorful fishing lure beads on one antenna
Titus Hardie = Goliath Beetle because he big. Enough said
The Deserter = An old fire ant because red is the color of communism and revolutions. And working for the motherland is very ant-adjacent I guess
Acele = Silverfish because she says she's a silver bird and I wanted to look at pictures of silverfish (they're just neat)
Joyce = Spider but she tries to hide it from the public. She's posh and probably used to silk and feeding off the lower class bugs
Elizabeth = Yellowjacket because she's feisty and has a yellow head thing
Evrart = Slug. He's just a big, slimy blob and one of his eye stalks doesn't extend all the way to equate to his lazy eye
Easy Leo = Snail because he's just a little guy. Also his shell is his red beanie
Klassje Amandou = Silver Forget-me-not butterfly one, because of her silver jumpsuit, and two, forget-me-nots are a running motif in the game, though they kind of stand for what klaasje is running from
Ruby the Instigator = Millipede because, again, just vibes, but also because she handles a lot of freight and distribution over the road systems and I think a millipedes many legs and segments kind of represent that 'busy highway' feel
Smoker on the Balcony = Some kind of butterfly, maybe a purple emperor, because of his grace and mystique, similar to kim. I think instead of harry noticing how his shirt is always open, he would notice his soft thorax hair O_O
Cuno = My first thought was a flying red ant, just because of his red hair but he kind of turned into a weird... thing? I kind of thought of lice and ticks but that may just be my poor association between children and parasites
Cunoesse = She's just a little knife wielding crab gremlin. Her 'pipo' is her shell which I definitely think she needs somewhere to hide like the fence in-game
Lena = Leaf bug because of the whole phasmid thing but I think her colors would be more similar to dead leaves with her hair looking like dead grass
Morell = Spiny leaf bug (they almost look like scorpions) because I think it fits his bigger size and it's still a phasmid
And I think that's everyone, in the drawing anyways! These explanations were a lot less coherent than I originally thought but it was fun! Honestly, I want to redo it and work on my design skills because I find it hard to transfer distinct characteristics from one source to another. I'll try another go at it whenever I need a break from Unity but for now it's back to coding and pixel sprites for me, yippee
