Maybe the pressure to write a "diverse" "cast" in the "rpc" is mis-conjured from the broader problem of capitalism. It reminds me of how children see mommy and daddy having a disagreement and then go re-enact that dynamic on the playground. Who is the "representation" for? Is it good for the soul and for society in general to seek to understand those different from us and that writing from those differing points of view can be part of that? Yeah, sure. Might it be useful to "examine" our story choices? For sure. But we aren't failing social justice if we don't. And if we're doing this, we better be doing this and we need to check all the boxes and how dare you. And motherfucker, woe betide the asshole who does poorly, who didn't spend enough time doing the correct research. This isn't Hollywood or medical testing or elected officials or glass ceilings or workplace safety enforcement. We aren't doing structural work. We're playing pretend for free with our friends in small groups. Girl, half of us are playing as stray dogs anyway.

Genuinely, if this is your attitude why does it never cross over to Caucasian characters? Cillian Murphy is on the record saying he's not British, he's Irish, but I've never seen any of these people who are so concerned about heritage call out players who use him for their English characters.
Also, as a mixed race person, only complaining about non white characters doesn't make you look good or informed.
i agree with you 100% but this has made me go off on a tangent that is only slightly related, which i must now scream into the void.
these people are very much giving i've never actually met a person of color but i need to be outraged on their behalf, and that is because the rpc is so fucking puritan. i think that is bc north america is very purtian still, and bc north americans appear to be the majority in this corner of the rpc, we are 1) the loudest bc we outnumber everyone else and 2) we are going to force our puritan ideals on you. i don't think thats purely intentional, it's more like the minority people (ie people from other countries) must act like us if they want to be accepted. i think that's a very normal part of being human.
we are obsessed with policing others. these people are literally like i have to control everything i do and everything everyone in the town does because i have to be perfect and so does everyone around me or else we're not gonna be able to go to heaven cause jane is a witch and god is gonna smite us down.
we haven't moved on from that mindset... like as a continent. we just haven't. we see the same behavior in the rpc, it just looks a little different. if you do something i dont like, i can go to rpcburnbook and expose you (or just make some shit up) and then you'll get in trouble for it, and then everyone will be paying attention to you instead of me and i'm safe from the pitchforks for now. people do this bc they cant control anything in their lives, like the economy or global warming or whatever. the world is a scary place and we don't understand it.
and for a lot of people, this is a major source of community for them as well as a hobby. for them, a few parts of it make up their "hierarchy of needs". losing it would be awful, so ofc theyre gonna act fucking crazy about it.

well i write mainly fantasy where neither the middle east or asia exist. i agree that saying its basically the same thing is not ok (which i did not say in the first place) but you can't determine a persons 23 and me result just by looking at them. i dont think 2 cultures are the same just bc they might look similar or ive used an actor for visual representation.... cause thats all a face claim is. visual representation of what your character looks like.
i think a lot of rpers (especially non fantasy and non historical rpers) forget that your character is not your face claim.

i never liked yall! i liked harry potter, the early stuff anyways, cause it's very nostalgic you know? and like yeah jk rowling made up all that shit and stuff and that's cool... but like... hp sites kinda suck... i do love to rant about the various things wrong with harry potter (like the wizard economy, the lack of chemistry between some characters, no wtaf is quidditch, etc), but i'll save that for another time.
its like you got the same eras that just keep getting recycled. the riddle era, maurauders, golden trio, next gen, etc. and everything revolves around that damn school!!!! and tbh now that i think about it, it's not repetition that sucks about these sites, it's that you are BOUND by the wizarding world. you are SO constrained within that world. like what does your character do for a living? where do they live? who do they interact with daily?
the answer is either they're at school or they work for the ministry.

anyways, even when sites are like adult characters only, you are still bound by that world. youve got hogwarts staff (again), ministry (again), shopowner in diagon alley, healer at st mungos, auror (also the ministry). like everything is just stuck in that politics-school loop... death eaters are acting up, war is brewing, omg we're at war, war is over, time for school drama.

Well... Jkr didn't make all that up, her work is famously derivative. But the whole appeal of HP as a genre is that it's constrained by the wizarding world. It's exactly like using Bridgerton or Midsomer Murders as a setting in this respect. You have a setting where everyone knows everyone else and is overly invested in eachother's business and that's why it's popular. Ironically exactly like the rpc...
