     He laughed a little at her explanation. It fit perfectly into the stereotypes that television shows and movies set into place when it comes to college or going to a university. He figured she had enough brainpower to worm her way into a spot in one of the high class universities in the South. She didn’t really start blabbering off and showing her intelligence like some people he knew but her casual speech was so eloquent and she used words that people wouldn’t normally use in small talk. Dave felt ridiculous for picking this up, since it meant he was paying way too much attention to what Jade was saying. His eyes flickered back to the screen, checking the remaining time, before returning to her.

     ”It sounds really cliche, honestly,” he mused. When she mentioned her possible major, one of his eyebrows curved up. “The sciences, huh? You’d have to have some real intelligence to be able to understand and keep up with that stuff. I couldn’t handle that. Speaking of full rides, I almost had one to one of those prestigious music schools down there, but there are always people who will be better than you.”

     He grinned back at her, her smile making his own lips want to work itself into one. “I’ll give you my number when my shift is over or whenever you want to leave. I know this great little coffee place that isn’t that popular. It’s so small you’d have to be looking for it to notice it. And there’s no need to repay me. You just being this nice is plenty.”

     "It really is," she replied, nodding in agreement, the corners of her eyes creasing slightly with her warm smile. "I mean people usually expect the stereotypes to be way off mark when in reality they're actually spot on, and I still haven't decided if that's sad or not. I suppose I can't really confirm or deny how college parties are portrayed since this is my first time going out since the start of the semester, but I'm inclined to assume that it is fairly accurate,"

     "I guess you could say that," Jade murmured sheepishly, never one to boast or brag; besides, being a bookworm hadn't ever done her any favors in terms of making friends and she'd rather not drive him away by coming off as some pretentious know it all. "Honestly I'm no smarter than any of the other students in my program...I mean I still haven't even decided on a major yet so everything is just broad field studies for me at this point." She brightened slightly at the mention of his own scholarship opportunity. "Oh! It's never too late to apply you know! If you've got a shot at a scholarship you ought to at least try! No harm, no foul, right? I'm sure that if you worked hard enough you'd be able to get in with a full ride no sweat! Besides, you have something none of those other musicians have; experience!"

     Jade's heart skipped beat when he offered to give her his number; she hadn't wanted to ask for fear of rejection, but she very much wanted to get to know him better, to spend more time with him. "I insist," she implored. "You've been so accommodating, you didn't have to go out of your way to help me. Allow me to show my gratitude, a cup of coffee is the least I can do!"

     Dave had his complete attention resting on this girl. This may be because of his utter surprise at her actually knowing what software he used and  how it was to be dealt with. It’s rare that he ever met anyone who could identify it so easily, much less a female. Since Dave hadn’t really had either in his life, the lines of soul mate and best friend were a bit blurred but this girl was somehow already slowly easing herself into one of those categories. She shared one of his greatest interests, had a great smile, and ,despite his previous fits of anxiety before, he was beginning to feel more relaxed and calm around her.

     ”I agree. The price almost turned me away when I first saw it but I managed to get a trial period and as soon as that was over, I found myself, card in hand, ready to buy it,” he said, smiling a bit to himself. He shrugged. “I’m not the richest guy, though, so it took me a long time to even consider the trial period. I worked overtime for a few days to work that into my budget. Living on your own here is tough.”

     ”I’m assuming you’re at one of the colleges in the South.” He paused for a moment. “What’s it like? I’m sorry if you don’t want to answer but I’m curious. I couldn’t afford to attend any of them but I’ve always wondered what they were like.”

     He grinned and shook his head slightly, as if completely blowing off what he just said. “Anyway, if you ever have any free time, you should definitely come hangout with me. It’d be nice to get a fellow musician’s opinion on my work, even if you do play an instrument and I don’t.” Liar. You took piano lessons for almost eleven years before you moved to Central.

      Jade found herself becoming increasingly enamored by the minute; she was utterly drunk off his attention and she found herself wondering how she had ever existed before this moment. It was effortless to forget the crowd and the club and lose herself in their conversation, the noise of her surroundings drowned out the by the drumming of her heart and his intoxicating voice. She had never been particularly popular, no one had paid any mind to the bookish wallflower; but now she was basking in the limelight and loving every second.

     “I am,” Jade confirmed with a curt nod. “I don’t exactly come from money myself, but I was fortunate enough to secure a full ride. If you don’t mind spending a majority of your time doing coursework it isn’t so bad; but it’s easy to get burnt out on it from time to time. You spend most of your day in lectures and labs, and then after that you have assignments. I supposed things vary depending on your major; I haven’t quite figured my major out just yet, but it’ll probably be something in the sciences,” she replied with a shrug.

     If it was even possible, Jade’s smile widened even more as she nodded eagerly. “That would be great! I’d love to hang out sometime and hear your music!” she exclaimed. “Maybe we could go for coffee sometime or something? You know, so I can repay you for being so kind and helping me out,” she suggested.

     Dave grinned to himself a little as he measured the look of surprise and fascination on her face. Even though it was directed toward the screen rather than him, but since all this belonged to him, it was pretty similar right? He didn’t really care. He glanced at the amount of time left on the song that had played when he entered and, noticing it was dwindling down to about twenty seconds left, he quickly moved his hands to the keyboard, fingers swiftly finding an appropriate follow up song and setting it to play after this one with only a second or two pause. Having done his work, he looked back to her. She had been mumbling something about an icon and he had to rethink for a second about what she said. As soon as she pointed to the icon, however, he quickly acknowledged her words and looked at her with his own surprised expression.

     ”You actually know what that is?” He quickly realized that sounded a bit rude and hurried to correct it. “I mean, not many people do and that software is tricky enough that you need to have some beforehand knowledge before using it…” He found himself leaning away out of confusion and shock.”

     “‘As well’? So you make your own music too? Huh. You don’t seem like the type to have anything to do with it. So are you like me and use sound programs to piece music together or do you play your own instrument?” Suddenly, his interest in this girl had spiked up. If Dave enjoyed anything it was music. The only thing he could like more was a girl who understood music.

     Jade watched quietly as he worked, his long slender fingers gliding skillfully across the keyboard with practiced ease. She managed to contain her excitement as he worked in order to keep from distracting him from his job, the possibility of her getting him into trouble still weighing heavily on her conscious. Before too long he had the next song queued up to play with a few seconds of delay following the fade out of the current song.

     “Oh yeah,” she replied, nodding earnestly and taking no offense to his comment. “Sure it can be a bit tricky to muddle through at first, but once you figure out it’s totally worth it! Definitely one of the best softwares out there for what it costs; then again the reason why it’s so reasonably priced is because of how much effort you have to actually exert to master it, the streamlined softwares are much easier but cost way more.”

     “Well I mean back in high school I used to have a lot more time for that sort of thing, but I still find time to dabble a bit between papers and exam. It’s a good stress reliever,” Jade confirmed with a nod. “I play the bass guitar.”

hmmm i guess the city is quite the sight at night with all the lights and what not,especially in the central province... but still! you ought to be more careful! and make sure you bundle up when you go out, especially if you plan and catching a nap on anymore benches.
