Dairy Whiskey – WIP Intro
[image description: a hanging branch of berries silhouetted against a blurred rising sun. in the centre, a white serif font reads, “dairy whiskey”. / end id]
hello hello hello lovely people! it’s been a hot minute since i came on here with some wip stuff so here’s dairy whiskey (again). if you’ve been following me for some time now, you must have read my first intro for dairy whiskey (when it was supposed be a novella and the story was very different from what it is rn). if you have, i want to give you all my love for staying on my blog for so long. if you haven’t, here we go with dairy whiskey 2.0 (sorry but i had to call it that).
so, what happened? what’s going on?
well, dairy whiskey was supposed to be a novella (like i’ve already mentioned, please excuse my redundancy) with an intended word count of 30k. i started writing it last year, and well, that didn’t work out, so i started rewriting it as a novel. i took a long break from the draft and paid no attention to it the first four months of 2022 (not ideal but that’s what we have to work with so let’s just ignore my lack of attention span and call it a day). i enrolled for a writing course in may and decided to work on dairy whiskey for the programme. so now, i’ve been actively drafting this baby.
ramble over for now, i promise. let’s quickly get to the specifics. it’s a long, long post so brace yourselves. i suggest getting tea and snacks.
excerpts and taglist under the cut.

reading poetry is great because there's always a well structured line followed by the most deranged thing you've ever encountered
‘I Need Autonomy’ inspired by Jenny Holzer
[start id: a screenshot of dialogue that reads as follows: “When you stare at strangers through the window of a car or on a bike, making intense eye contact that could mean anything, wondering if they’re concerned, or amused, or disgusted, or an amalgam of these three. Or something else entirely. And secretly you enjoy this—this sliver of a moment when you’re captured in someone else’s mind, boldly filigreed there, before dissipating forever. You’ll never see each other again and it makes the rendezvous safe, unaccounted for. It lets me be awful when nothing else can.” “I think that's a little pretentious.” “I think it's life-changing.”/ end id]

imposter syndrome in autism is so..... im rotating it in my mind
part of the reason people go years without knowing theyre autistic because they dont “act” autistic in front of other people is because theyve been so conditioned to repress their symptoms that they become unobservable, sometimes even to themselves. this is masking. its not a light switch that can be turned on and off again. its the gradual repression and punishment for acting anything but neurotypical and the construction of a new, more socially acceptable identity.
as time goes on and your most ‘offensive’ symptoms are ‘under control’ the only things that remain are the ones that only hurt you and the exhaustion. you cant even unwind fully in private because of the fear of being ‘wrong’. the reason so many autistic people struggle with identity is because we’ve literally been forced to abandon who we are at a core level and make one to appease the world. forced to act completely against our nature in order to... act more ‘natural’.
the worst part of this is that theres no winning. you either show your symptoms/get diagnosed and face belittlement, infantilization, restrictions of freedom, or you mask, you hide away, and receive no support because no one believes you. no one understands how, when externally you SEEM so ‘competant’, you could be suffering so constantly. you either set yourself ablaze for the world to observe or spend the rest of your life tending burns no one else can see.

Collective title for my short fiction! I like to write about relationships, breaking points, self destruction and impulsive decisions. Highlights include a teenager taking her little sister to the aquarium after killing their father, ace lesbians teaming up against the commune they spend their summers on, sneaking out to visit your brother who faked his death, setting a laundromat on fire to impress a girl and a cat that might be God.

this is where i buried my baby teeth
Collective title for my poetry! I like to write weird little narratives and long, freeform monologues. Themes include reckoning with your body, reckoning with your past self, perception of others in relation to yourself, fragmented identity and being transgender <3

slowly but surely starting to write again. It's been a lovely and simultaneously very difficult summer. I feel it "should" have been harder, but I am being kind to myself and value my life more than I ever have. It really, really does make all the difference.
anyway.
this is essentially a long winded reminder to keep holding on. <3
