Jae In didn’t want more people to witness what was going on. The gods knew she had been through enough trouble at school but it didn’t stop her from standing up for herself. She never had someone to protect her and, in her mind, she didn’t need someone that wasn’t her mother. The other figure didn’t seem to mind the fact the other female had stood up for her as well. The comments kept going and Jae In didn’t hesistate to let her stings out, “Mean people don’t deserve respect.” And just like that, she stung the rude camper.

Balthamora blinked, completely in shock as she moved back a little. That was definitely not what she had been expecting when she’d come to intervene. You’re forgetting that this place is a camp for people with extraordinary powers. That’s probably normal to everyone else. And then.. there’s you. She quickly pushed the thoughts out of her mind, instead, focusing on the hint of amusement as the other camper moved back, completely shutting up. “Mean people get what they deserve in the end. And you definitely deserved that.”

———— MOST campers could tell that this was the Hephaestus cabin just by looking at the intricate door, what with it’s many clogs and screws and locks arranged around it. It wasn’t hard to tell that she was new, especially now when Balthamora had wrongly identified the cabin. ‘’No, this is the Hephaestus cabin.’’ Ara had held the heavy door back, looking up at the Nike child with a gentle smile. ‘’But I’d be happy to show you where you cabin is? I’m Araminta.’’

Of course she got it wrong. She smiled sheepishly, biting on her lip and going to walk away again, until the other girl told her she’d be happy to help. “Seriously? I would really appreciate that. They told me I haven’t got any siblings, so I’ve gotta figure this all out on my own. It’s.. frustrating, to say the least.”

“Always my pleasure to help.” Jac raised both eyebrows as she gave a quick glance at the girl’s condition. “Well, you can still walk on both feet, and seem to still be alive and kicking; you don’t really need my assistance, now do you?”

She shrugged. “I suppose I don’t, but I don’t know around here. This entire place seems completely the opposite from what I thought life was.”

The ridiculous joke made Effie laugh even harder. “I am glad to hear it!” 

Balthamora smiled, glad to have made someone laugh. “Indeed.” She brushed herself off, then looked up at the other. “Hi, I’m Balthamora.”

“Are you alright?” Effie asked, still stifling her laughter. “That looked like a hard fall.”

She nodded a little, a tiny smile forming as she thought of a joke. “I had a great trip.”

“Balthy. That’s cute.” Europe chuckled, slowing her pace so that she was standing next to the girl. “Where are you from, Balthy?”

“Seriously? Thanks. I’m from Auckland, New Zealand. What about you?”

“Ares cabin…wait are you new? Your parent waited longer than most.”

A hesitant nod. “My mother was waiting till she thought’d I’d proved myself to be worthy of her blessing.. that day still hasn’t come yet, but I’m here anyway.”

Effie couldn’t help the decidedly unladylike snort of laughter. “Ah, good job!”

Balthamora sighed quietly, damning herself for the clumsiness that was a constant in her life. “Yeah, sure. Thanks.”

She looked over to the girl, pushing herself back onto her feet and brushing the dirt off of her hands. “Thanks. Truly.” She muttered, checking to make sure she hadn’t fallen onto anything that could cut her.
