‘‘I — this, you…’‘ she was unable to make up words as she spoke, the confusion that was going on inside her head all simply rolling off her tongue and she then laughed, closing her eyes, realizing how stupid she sounded. Licking her lips, she revealed blue orbs again and smirked, ‘‘more than like.’‘ There, that was better. Or, at least something. Shaking her head slightly at the compliment she received, she then moved a hand through her smooth hair, causing the strands to fall everywhere but properly onto her back. ‘‘You’re not the first to call me that,’‘ she was eager to reply – liking the word, liking any word that fell from Lou’s lips. Especially when they were directed to her. ‘‘Well – I can always work a double shift.. keep the club open longer than usual,’‘ Micky suggested, as this club made her feel more alive than anything else in life did. However she enjoyed hanging out with Veronica, it was the lifeliness of the club and the many strangers that she got surrounded by that made her forget about her past. That and the tips she received from men who thought they could play a number on her by giving her extra money. But she wasn’t as easily swept away as Jasper was. Especially not by men. Women were her thing. And that would never change. An unexpected squeal left her lips when she got the task to close the club, eyes lighting up like a christmas tree as her mind already drifted off to feeling the wind blow in her neck, making the chills run down her spine as she clung onto Lou. Immediately turning on her heel, she ran back inside, shouting, ‘‘— you’re the best!’‘
As quickly as she was, she ran up to lock Lou’s office, the most important spot in the whole building, the front door and then the bar she had been busy at. To disconnect her phone, retrieve her jacket and pull the plug from the drain she had been soaking glasses in as she passed it in a hurry. Putting a quick pause to her music as she moved quickly to the back door, she then swiped every app away she had still opened and put the device away. Last but not least she made sure to double lock the back door and then stashed the keys back in her bra, the safest place to hide them if you asked her. ‘’All set, she then wrapped the jacket around her but didn’t close it. The temperature was too hot, a summer evening in New York provided enough heat for another few hours after the sun had set – which was still happening at this hour. ‘’You proud of me, Lou?’’ she needed to hear it, maybe asking a bit too much, but it had been a while since she had seen her. ‘’Alright, I’m ready. Show off that bike of yours, it’ll give me something to brag about on social media.’’ Micky teased, her fingers running along the smooth surface of the beautiful bike her boss owned.
“Took you long enough.” It was harmlessly spoken in a snide remark. Lou’s legs were long, straddling her polished bike in an effortless pose. God, there had been too many double takes at the photographs in magazines at the pristine motor bike. Countless times of flipping back to the photographs had left the corners of the magazine pages worn with the woman’s finger prints. She had only ever longed with imagination of the purr the engine would create once started. Oh, --and wasn’t it better than imagined...Lou turned the key, the purr was there. It was just hidden beneath a muffled stealth warning. “--and now you’re going to have me wait..my time is precious.” It was a dry humor. A humor that most people didn’t become offended by, even when Lou was walking on a more rational line of life. She was sarcastic on just the right note, some even found it to be flirtatious. It was all apart of her enigma.
“Here.” Directing her helmet out to Micky, Lou wrapped her fingers around the handlebars hoping her position would translate for the girl to get on the bike. It had been a pattern of the past. It’s continuity of them riding along the night together had cracked somewhere along the journey. Lou blamed herself knowing it was factual that if she had simply come around more often they wouldn’t have been road blocked. Something in her eyes looked at the younger woman almost in a plead, -can we just pick off where we left?- “Come here.” More gentle, Lou scooted just enough. An eagerness chilled her spine and that’s when her foot disregarded the clutch and began to let out the clutch. As they began to roll forward, a gentle hand moved over to Mickey’s arms around her and clutched them tighter against her chest. There was a habit of care for the woman that straddled behind her. It hadn’t needed to be often voiced, but there was a lot that Lou noticed Micky did. Actions that were taken without being asked, and the Aussie was forever grateful for her existence. It was moments of appreciation that led Lou to believe in something irrational such as fate. Keeping her eyes forward, the beaming light illuminated their way. Lou rolled her eyes feeling suppressed by the streets of New York not being long as her worldly hunger craved for- but the nostalgia of it all, riding in the city night was more than fulfilling for her. As they rolled by cars, and pedestrians of the late night/early morning, Lou’s mind began to melt in the idea of serenity. This was it, this was her peace.
