So he finally took it upon himself to connect the dots.

One of my favorite things about their friendship is that Toothless is so in tune with Hiccup and how he’s feeling that he can tell just how tired and distressed Hiccup is here. He can hear the tone of his voice pitched slightly up, he can see the tired hunch in Hiccup’s shoulders, and he can tell Hiccup is frustrated that they’re in this situation BECAUSE of how tired he’s been. And Toothless goes to comfort him at once, to let him know he’s there and gives Hiccup the extra boost he needs to know what to do next.
