With a nod and a slight smile she simply admitted “ Sort of. I started working here a couple months ago or so. I know my way around, especially to the front entrance at least. I’ve just been a bit. . preoccupied to remember every single classroom so far. ” When she’s a bit busy trying to track down her friends, learn about this world, figure out what’s going on with her memories and teach a class on top of all of that, can anyone really blame her?  

“ I teach Marine Biology here. I’d ask if you’d be interested in joining my class next semester, but I’m guessing you’re just visiting the university. Am I right? ” Based on how Manon fairly obviously didn’t know her way around and how she seemed lost. 

                    MANON  BRIEFLY  WONDERS  what  could  have  her  so  preoccupied  that  she  still  doesn’t  know  her  way  around  this  late  into  her  employment,  but  considering  the  way  castle  town  seems  to  work,  this  doesn’t  even  rank  on  the  list  of  strangest  things  she’s  ever  heard  of.  ❝  in  my  experience,  all  classrooms  look  the  same  anyway,  so  how  are  you  supposed  to  tell  ??  ❞  granted,  her  school  experience  is  from  back  in  the  underground,  and  things  were  a  lot  different  there.

                    she  shakes  her  head.  ❝  nope,  not  a  student.  ❞  that  has  never  truly  been  the  life  for  her.  listening  to  others  drone  on  about  something  she  doesn’t  truly  care  about  isn’t  something  she  considers  a  fun  time.  ❝  i’m  just  here  for  work,  we  set  up  a  coffee  cart  on  campus  and  we’re  just  preparing  to  leave  now.  ❞

Apala blinked, but then she couldn’t help but smile at how Manon phrased her request. “ I don’t know. . I’m still getting used to this labyrinth myself. ” However she then just adjusted the books and pile of papers she was holding in her arms, and smiled a bit more. “ Joking. Of course I can. Would you rather I give you directions, or guide you to the front entrance myself? ” Clearly she wasn’t exactly in a rush, so she wouldn’t mind either. It was up to Manon’s preference. 

Truth be told she couldn’t exactly navigate the university like the back of her hand quite yet. But Apala knew the basics at least. Front entrance, restrooms, library, her classroom and the cafeteria, and that’s all she’s needed to know so far. Still new to this job and such, but she was doing pretty well.

                    MANON  RAISES  AN  eyebrow,  ready  to  point  out  that  it  looks  like  the  other  works  here,  but  the  ❛  joking  ❜  is  tagged  onto  the  end  before  she  can.  good  thing,  too,  as  she  would  have  to  question  the  type  of  people  the  school  was  letting  teach  there.  ❝  well,  i  can’t  guarantee  i  won’t  get  distracted  if  you  just  give  me  directions  and  leave  me  to  my  own  devices.  ❞

                    when  she  wants  to  focus  on  something,  she  knows  she  can,  but  in  a  building  she’s  never  been  to  with  new  places  to  explore,  it  is  very  likely  that  she  will  be  distracted  by  any  spiders  she  comes  across.  school  zones  are  notorious  for  their  bad  treatment  of  insects.  ❝  if  you’re  just  getting  used  to  this  place,  are  you  new  here  ??  ❞

It was finally the end of Apala’s work day at the university. After a long day of classes and grading research assignments, she was thinking about how she would spend what time left she had in the day. She could go to the beach, it would likely be too cold to soon after all, or she could stop by the library quick, pick up a new book to read for the night. Or perhaps maybe it was a day to try and learn more about what was going on in this world she found herself in awhile back. How long has it been now? She couldn’t even recall at the moment.

All of these thoughts whirled in her head as she locked up her classroom for the day. To say she seemed distracted for once would be a bit of an understatement as she turned around and nearly ran into you, luckily quick to snap out of her train of thought and stop herself before she did. “ Oh, my apologies. . I got caught up in my thoughts and . . Did you need something? ”

                    MANON  DOESN’T  REALLY  think  it’s  necessary  for  her  workplace  to  set  up  a  stand  on  the  university  campus,  not  when  beans,  beans,  beans  isn’t  actually  that  far  away.  management  apparently  doesn’t  see  it  that  way,  hence  why  she  ended  up  at  the  university  for  the  entire  day,  serving  cups  of  coffee  to  students  who  honestly  look  like  they  could  be  in  a  zombie  movie.  they  are  finishing  up  now,  however,  and  so  she  had  taken  the  opportunity  to  dash  away  to  the  restroom.  now  she  is  lost.

                    the  sudden  appearance  of  another  person  has  her  taking  a  step  back,  but  she  doesn’t  react  besides  that.  she  shakes  her  head.  ❝  it’s  fine,  nobody  got  hurt,  ❞  she  says.  ❝  though  now  that  you’re  here,  do  you  think  you  could  show  me  out  of  this  maze  of  a  building  ??  all  of  the  doors  look  the  same.  ❞

   — ❝ I’M A HUMBLE SOUL ; DON’T ASK FOR MUCH , don’t bring much attention to myself unless it comes up in conversation like now. Easier to be like that , ❞ Jacob quips , cleaning another glass with a dry rag and setting it on the counter. But then … he goes back to her first question , and then her second , and Jacob has to craft out his story to now fit the explanations. He’s clever , he’s got wit , but can it save him in times like THESE ?? ❝ You don’t hang out in alleys just to get some fresh air ?? I was takin’ a smoke , ❞ he replies near seamlessly , despite his few-seconds long hesitation prior. A hand brushes over his face , near over the scar above his right eye , to pull away a few stray locks of hair before he looks back down. ❝ Just figured I’d let him get a punch in so he though he’d have a CHANCE ; it’s a tactic , make yourself seem weaker so they let their guard down , and you don’t have to put in more of an effort than y’need to. ❞ 

                    MANON  GIVES  HIM  a  look  to  show  that  she  doesn’t  believe  him  for  a  moment,  but  doesn’t  comment  on  it  directly.  she’ll  let  him  live  in  his  fantasies  for  as  long  as  he  wishes  to.  she  keeps  her  poker  face  on  as  he  gives  her  the  answers  she  asked  for.  ❝  i  would  think  trying  to  get  some  fresh  air  would  be  cancelled  out  by  the  smoke,  but  i  guess  those  are  semantics.  ❞  she  doesn’t  say  anything  about  the  hesitance,  either.  the  more  she  tries  to  get  out  of  him,  the  more  fun  this  will  be,  and  she  is  genuinely  interested  in  how  far  he  is  willing  to  take  his  explanations.  ❝  but  if  you’re  so  powerful,  then  is  there  really  any  reason  to  get  him  to  let  his  guard  down  ??  if  you  can  just  put  an  end  to  the  situation  then  and  there,  why  not  do  that  instead  and  save  everyone  the  trouble  ??  ❞  she  says.  ❝  you  make  it  sound  so  effortless,  so  i  doubt  you  would  have  had  to  overexert  yourself  too  much.  ❞

felicity‌ !

there’s a very stark difference in their personalities, and it shows in moments like this. felicity is intimidated by most any authority figure, not liking to make a fuss or give anyone a reason not to at least think neutrally of them. but manon - manon is sort of everything they wish they could be. warm and kind, but someone who didn’t take any shit. the manager knows them both, mostly for the spider thing, but has elected to leave them alone after they found a tarantula as big as their fist on their car steering wheel. it was a funny story, one that left the petite brunette sputtering with laughter and pink in the cheeks. they like being able to just laugh with the other girl so freely.

they pull out a five dollar bill, then a very small, delicate-looking bell jar. usually sacred grove uses them for flower arrangement displays, about the size of a wrist corsage for dances, but inside of this one is a spider. it’s not exactly a small spider either; once it comes into view the spider seems to perk up at the sight of the dark-haired one. it’s got ventilation, i promise, their gentle eyes say, setting the jar down next to the money. it’s really thin glass, so it breathes. usually it’s for flowers. they point to the one pinned in their hair - a simple poinsettia, for the holidays. you’ll take care of them better than i could. i know it. gently they scooted both the five and the spider toward her.

                    WARM  AND  KIND  aren’t  exactly  the  first  two  words  manon  would  come  up  with  to  describe  herself.  she  knows  that  she’s  a  very  motherly  person,  having  looked  after  hundreds  of  spiders  at  once,  knowing  them  inside  and  out.  she  can  be  warm  and  kind  to  them,  but  she  hasn’t  really  paid  attention  to  whether  she  is  the  same  to  other  people  around  her.  perhaps  she  is  and  has  never  truly  realised  it.

                    under  normal  circumstances,  manon  is  sure  that  she  wouldn’t  have  a  job  still,  but  she  has  always  been  a  ❛  strange  ❜  person  by  other  people’s  standards,  and  she  isn’t  above  getting  her  hands  dirty  when  necessary.  if  that  includes  having  one  of  her  many  spider  friends  bothering  her  boss  until  they  leave  her  alone,  then  so  be  it.  she  was  just  glad  it  had  left  felicity  so  amused.

                    she  can  almost  hear  her  boss  telling  her  to  care  more  about  the  money  than  some  insect,  but  she  has  never  been  good  at  listening  to  her  elders,  and  so  she  leans  down  to  inspect  the  spider.  she  meets  felicity’s  eyes  and  smiles.  she  knows  they  could  never  harm  another  living  creature.  ❝  alright,  i’ll  take  this  little  guy  home  with  me  after  work.  ❞  the  spider  taps  against  the  glass  and  she  laughs,  unscrewing  the  lid  and  letting  him  crawl  up  her  arm.  ❝  you  want  to  help  me  make  drinks  ??  okay,  then.  ❞  she  turns  back  to  felicity.  ❝  your  drink  won’t  take  long. and  i  love  your  flower  by  the  way.  ❞

   — ❝ IT WASN’T A HUGE ISSUE , ❞ Jacob’s of course referring to whatever seemed to have caused the ugly shiner he’s sporting along his right eye - right underneath the sickly white eyebrow scar above it. He cleans a glass , continuing , ❝ Some prick in a back alley was lookin’ to start a fight n’ I wasn’t havin’ it so I let him get one good punch in and then he started talkin’ about how he was gonna wreck my shit n’ all that before I fought back n’ kicked his ass to kingdom come. Y’shoulda seen it , he had no chance. ❞ Of course , all of this is just a COVER-UP story so he doesn’t have to explain how he slipped and fell while getting out of the shower. No , he’s a badass - and everything he does has to be badass. Slipping & falling isn’t badass. ❝ But that stuff happens everyday , y’know ?? It’s NORMAL , I’m USED TO IT. I go toe-to-toe with dumbasses like that in m’sleep. ❞

                    MANON’S  EYEBROWS  CONTINUE  to  rise  throughout  the  whole  story,  and  she  doesn’t  know  where  she  should  begin  in  critiquing  it.  from  the  beginning,  she  supposes.  ❝  what  were  you  doing  in  a  back  alley  in  the  first  place  ??  going  to  a  place  like  that  is  just  asking  for  trouble,  really.  ❞  or  asking  to  be  cornered  by  two  monster  vendors  who  love  to  gossip.  she  still  doesn’t  know  why  bratty  and  catty  decided  to  set  up  shop  in  the  alley  beside  the  resort,  but  she  has  no  way  of  asking  them  now.  ❝  why  bother  letting  him  get  a  hit  in  if  you  can  save  yourself  the  trouble  and  finish  everything  right  then  and  there  ??  ❞  she  takes  a  sip  of  her  drink  before  continuing.  ❝  you  know,  if  this  stuff  happens  every  day,  i’m  surprised  you  still  have  time  to  work  a  normal  job,  or  that  you  haven’t  been  recognised  as  some  kind  of  hero.  ❞  she  lifts  her  drink  to  her  lips  to  mask  the  smile  that  has  begun  to  appear  there.

Surrounded by so many people had never made him feel so alone as it had in that moment, unsure of where it was that he belonged anymore. The crisp air blew against his red cheeks, burning him in such a way that soothed the ache inside of him. Breathing out through the mouth in childlike wonder as the gust of smoke blew out with it, smiling for just one second. He belonged to the earth, to the world around him, it reacted to him and gave him the small comfort of know that at least he had that.  Lost in between memories of two different people that where one in the same, having so much and yet feeling like he had nothing. Wondering if he would ever feel a semblance of normality, or if his world would continue to collide in such a way that he was unsure of how to deal with.  Reality suddenly rushed at him as he found himself in the middle of a crowded street, bumping into people as he moved with the motions. “Excuse me. Sorry. I beg your pardon. Omph,” he mumbled as he finally stepped out of the crowd. “I almost thought i’d be eaten alive.”

                    MANON  STROLLS  DOWN  the  street  with  her  neck  covered  by  a  long  scarf  and  a  stylish  hat  covering  her  head.  naturally,  these  are  just  vehicles  she  uses  to  transport  her  spider  friends  around  while  she’s  shopping.  she  isn’t  actually  that  cold  ;  living  in  the  underground  for  all  that  time  does  wonders  for  a  person’s  natural  body  temperature  when  it  comes  to  braving  the  elements.  she  stays  towards  the  edge  of  the  crowd  (  people  must  be  getting  in  some  christmas  shopping  ),  not  wanting  to  make  any  physical  contact  with  anyone  unless  absolutely  necessary.

                    she  hears  the  voice  close  to  her,  and  she  raises  an  eyebrow  as  she  turns  around.  ❝  i  think  you  would  know  if  you  were  about  to  be  eaten  alive.  ❞  being  a  monster  who  lived  among  monsters,  she  knows  a  thing  or  two  about  that.  ❝  and  crowds  aren’t  the  eating  type,  anyway.  trampling,  sure,  but  you  seem  relatively  unscathed.  i  doubt  you  were  in  any  real  danger.  ❞

*:･ﾟ  soft smile – constant expression – grew if only for a half second, revealing beneath it glistening white teeth. it was a genuine smile that reached her eyes entirely, the corners crinkling. it was common for rosetta to smile, but it was mostly out of habit, and not a genuine artefact as such.    ❝ here – plenty more where that came from~  ❞     she remarked, handing the small candy like substance over, all previous worries replaced with the grandmother-ly like instinct to make sure everyone was taking care of themselves.     ❝  no, the past never truly does leave us does it …   ❞    she thought out loud, this time, smile unwavering,    ❝   we could start all over again,    but don’t you think it’s better too – ah, what’s that earthen expression … oh yes ! to have loved and lost rather than .. not loved at all ?    ❞

                    MANON  TURNS  THE  substance  over  in  her  hand,  finding  it  rather  comforting  and  therapeutic.  she  spends  quite  a  bit  of  her  time  ensuring  those  she  cares  about  are  okay  that  she  rarely  has  time  to  think  about  whether  she  is  okay.  she  doesn’t  know  if  she  wants  to  think  about  it,  let  alone  whether  she  should.  being  vulnerable  isn’t  something  she’s  a  fan  of.  ❝  it  doesn’t,  ❞  she  agrees.  ❝  for  better  or  worse.  ❞  there  were  terrible  things  that  happened  in  the  underground,  but  she  also  has  plenty  of  fond  memories  of  that  time  as  well,  not  to  mention  when  she  opened  her  own  shop  on  the  surface  after  everything  was  said  and  done.  she  misses  that  shop  sometimes.  ❝  i  don’t  think  i  want  to  completely  start  all  over  again.  there  are  people  here  from  my  past  that  i  want  to  keep  in  my  life.  and  you’re  right.  just  because  i  sometimes  act  like  an  unfeeling  bitch  doesn’t  mean  i  have  to  be  one.  ❞  she  would  rarely,  if  ever,  say  this  to  another  person,  but  rosetta’s  kind  and  caring  nature  makes  it  easy.

genji  hums  as  he  scans  the  text  before  him  —  deep  into  thought  ,  trying  to  make  sense  of  it  .  he  remembers  isolde  mentioning  a  game  called  ‘  d&d  ’  and  ultimately  it  piqued  his  interest  .  of  course  ,  there’s  a  much  more  updated  version  of  this  back  where  he’s  from  ,  but  he  was  too  busy  partying  or  spending  hours  in  the  arcade  to  avoid  familial  duties  in  is  own  youth  to  bother  with  it  .  “  i  am  still  disappointed  there  are  no  cyborgs  ,  ”  he  mutters  ,  more  to  himself  than  anything  .  “  but  at  least  i  can  still  be  a  ninja  .  ”  it’s  settled  as  easily  as  that  !  “  though  …  it  now  begs  the  question  ,  which  options  are  better  ?  ”  it  isn’t  until  he  hears  a  voice  that’s  not  his  own  chime  in  ,  that  he  looks  up  from  his  ‘  studying  ’  .  “  oh  ,  my  apologies  .  it  seems  i  was  …  occupied  .  ”  a  feeling  of  embarrassment  creeps  over  him  briefly  as  he  chuckles  .  “  did  you  need  something  ?  ”

                    WHEN  IT’S  HER  turn  to  pick  up  the  rambunctious  children  (  she  says  children,  as  if  they’re  a  bunch  of  elementary  schoolers  )  and  she  can’t  find  them,  her  automatic  course  of  action  is  to  go  find  genji  to  see  if  he’s  seen  them.  she  twirls  her  car  keys  in  her  hand,  the  key-ring  making  lines  against  her  finger,  and  she  stops  only  when  she  finally  spots  him.  she  briefly  considers  calling  out  to  him,  but  then  hears  him  mumbling  to  himself  and  sneaks  closer  so  she  can  hear  him  better.  she  can’t  say  she  knows  what  he’s  talking  about,  but  that  doesn’t  stop  her  from  chiming  in,  anyway.  ❝  i  don’t  know  what  you’re  going  on  about,  but  a  ninja  is  always  an  excellent  option.  being  sneaky  is  always  the  best  way  to  go,  i  think,  ❞  she  says,  not  hiding  her  smile  at  how  embarrassed  he  seems.  she  moves  so  she’s  properly  in  his  line  of  vision.  ❝  i  was  just  wondering  if  you  knew  where  the  menaces  were.  ❞
