A baker kneads her fingers into the dough, watching it steadily stretch and fold in on itself. The consistency is a bit more sticky than she'd like at the moment, more gooey than the plush she had aimed for. It clung onto her well practiced hands each squish. Not enough flour, she finally decides finally sprinkling more in.

In habit she hums a light airy tune to herself as she works, soft enough that she can still hear her roommate trying to sneak up on her. Fondly she rolled her eyes. He must've been taking a break from his writing. He always got restless after hours of burying his face in his stolen typewriter.

Failing to scare her he grabbed her shoulders with a shake earning laughter rather than the intended startle, but they bot fell into giggles after. His hands never left her shoulder, fingers curling slightly. Contact as they teasingly shared some inside joke that's lingered so long the initial meaning was lost to time.

Ellis sat right outside with his knees buried in the snow in the cold night. His freezing body barely melted the snow, but after hours af lurking it was still enough for moisture to collect in his torn pants and leave a slushy puddle under him. Invasively staring through the glowing window in awe his breath fogged the glass. It left a sprint when he slowly lifted his hand to press against the smooth surface, his fingers curling the same way.

He realized in that moment he just watched everything he's ever wanted from this world. A too wide lopsided smile grew across his face as he tried to copy the baker girl next, but it was too forced to look quite right. Then he whispered key words he could pick up from the muffled banter between them like a sacred prayer he can't quite understand yet. Scrunching his nose he tried mimicking an emotion on the writers face that he can't identify.

The soft crunch of footsteps started in the distance.

Without checking to see who it was he ran and didn't look back, booking it like a frightened deer. In the morning they'll notice the fingerprints on the window and find it odd, but still clean it away like he was never there. Later that night he'll learn from them all over again.
