I’m just having fun over here! Sometimes I may have a serious analysis but enjoying something is way more important to me than some moral superiority and partaking The Best that is out there. I say this as someone with an English degree. I found I like things like the classics way more if I’m unserious about them, and that’s just the energy I bring into all of my reading/watching/etc now

I’ll try to keep this a fun space, AND books, tv, etc are inherently political—they always have been. Racism, ableism, transphobia, homophobia, and general assholery are not tolerated. I love the block button and I use it generously to curate my internet spaces 💛

This book is Gay, so delightfully gay. Set in a time period in China where same sex marriage (at least with men) is seen as valid, if lesser (BOOOOOOO) but honestly the main characters dont give two fucks about society anyway and their friends are supportive 💛 gay rights

This is a fake? enemies to lovers. The main two have HISTORY and then spend the rest of the book learning to communicate and resolving their problems and being in love like they have wanted to be since they were TEENAGERS!! It starts kind of awkward, but then it’s funny and sweet and angsty and then sweet again

Fu Shen is a general, forced essentially into retirement by a totally accidental “accident” where he almost died and loses most of the feeling in his legs. I really like how Fu Shen’s disability is handled actually! He has a lot of autonomy and it’s cool how he uses different mobility aids through the book. He’s just generally the Grouchy but softens for his loved ones type and I LOVE TO SEE IT

Yan Xiaohan, heart on his sleeve, is so precise in everything he does and he does it all for his loved ones. I want to grab him and shake him he did not have to let Fu Shen believe the worst about him for SO LONG oh my god!! Self sacrificing bastard!!!!

This book does have one of those weird chemically induced horniness moments that are oddly common in chinese bl novels and while that makes me cringe i’m not even mad about it tbh. The language around it is largely innuendo and fade to blacks, so I tolerate it lmao

The politics in this book are pretty interesting, too, largely because it is so interpersonal. The story is so satisfying with how the main characters follow leads, make decisions, and try to change the political climate—and survive. There were a few points that were uninteresting to me, but largely I’m reading like I’m sipping tea. Gasp! No he didn’t! It’s great fun

There’s only two books but they’re so sweet and beautiful and please go read it, Golden Terrace is so underrated!!!

I picked up the book because the person on the cover looked like she’d be cool and I WAS RIGHT! I love this cover it says “are you looking to read about a badass demon woman who is POWERFUL and has a heart of gold?” AND IT DELIVERS

I seriously love the main characters so much. There are two main POVs

Adrian, the only witch who has genuinely made me want to also be a witch. He is so sweet and warm, and so loyal and resolute. I love this man. I am particularly obsessed with this one line where he says “it is witchcraft” when referring to his work. That unlocked something in my brain now all my crafts are witchcraft. It’s probably been said before but I’d never heard it and it is a delight

Bex, demon. Leader. Has a sword. Serious, mysterious, and has imo the coolest horns. Dresses in all black (definitely not so people can’t see her bleed). I wanted to see her fight and win and when she does its so satisfying, I am so so so pleased. I want to give her a hug

There is also a genderqueer character who is constantly changing how they look and is referred to only with they/them pronouns and that will always make me love a story more

The plot does have some predictability, I had guesses about what would happen, but that didn’t make it less enjoyable. If anything I was really anticipating finding out/confirming what her true power was and how it fit into the world building

THE WORLD BUILDING OH MY GOD. I now have to read the epic of gilgamesh. The world is like ours, but as if the epic were true. It’s an alternate universe with cellphones AND witches, wizards AND cars, warlocks (yes they have some differences), demons, and gods. I have never heard of someone taking ancient Mesopotamian myths and merging them with our world and it’s fucking fantastic

For people who care—me ;)—there are mentions of sexytimes and attraction but nothing explicit onscreen. The romance in this book feels very soft and that’s my favorite kind of romance to read!! The loyalty they develop is really beautiful

I could not put it down and I cannot wait for the next one. I will be thinking about it and have already started telling my friends to read it I need people to talk to!!
