Some costume hats I made recently! I modified my millinery techniques to use plastic cross-stitch "fabric" and glue instead of buckram and stitching. It worked quite well! These are inexpensive but fairly sturdy, an excellent alternative to a traditionally made hat- perfect for any time you might not want to risk an expensive and well-made hat, but want to look good!
Another hat supply store, this one in Europe. They have a selection of general millinery supplies as well as some really fabulous trims- I especially like their artificial flowers. They also have some cute pre-made hats if you just want something to decorate!
Another inexpensive hat block alternative- these ones are designed for making straw hats, but could probably be used for other hat-making endeavors

Continuing with my "let's post random hat-making supplies until things pick up," one of my favorite hat suppliers is Hats by Leko. The website is a touch hard to navigate and there is a minimum order (you must spend at least a certain amount per order), but there is a vast array of options and fair pricing. There's also a good amount of pre-made hats, hat bases, etc., which are useful if you're just looking to make something quick and easy or just want to decorate something.
We haven't had any submissions yet, so I thought to tide things over until things pick up (this being a really young blog, and all) I'd share with you some of my favorite suppliers! Let's start with Hat Shapers.
First, you should really read Hat Shapers' Note to Professional Milliners. These are not intended for professional use, but if you're just looking to make hats for yourself and for costume use, with a little creativity they ought to work fine.
One of the biggest impediments to aspiring hat-making hobbyists is the expense of hat blocks. Traditional wooden hat blocks are very expensive, which is quite an upfront expense for hobbyists. Hat shapers are plastic hat blocks, and most styles are only $28 each! Most styles come in multiple sizes (they are made from wooden blocks, so some styles (especially the children's styles and more unusual shapes) are only available in one size or in very limited sizes). For a small extra fee, some styles can have brims added (they look like they have brims, but the flat bases are only intended as a stabilizer for the body of the hat block).
Will this blog be continued at all?
It will be! I personally am not currently taking commissions and neither of the other two people watching it make hats, but I've been thinking about posting some miscellaneous hat-related things to hold out until someone other than me (hopefully) posts some content. (I haven't yet because I've been extraordinarily busy lately.)
