Experiment with matte aluminium- it does make a fun feather! I used millinery wire to make the quill stiffer. Also pre-crumpling then scratching would yield distinctive silver patterns against the black.

@mzrowan just got me some matte black heavy aluminium foil to play with as a millinery supply. The black is a scratchable coating over the normal metal colour, so I may be able to make some neat texture and pattern. Right now contemplating scratching and cutting out some feathers. This may be one material that I have to glue, not sew. Let's find out!

Another hat supply store, this one in Europe. They have a selection of general millinery supplies as well as some really fabulous trims- I especially like their artificial flowers. They also have some cute pre-made hats if you just want something to decorate!
