This is the mandolin seen through the camera before being photographed. The image is shown at the full 8x10 inch size on the back of the camera making it really easy to arrange the composition. It being upside down is surprisingly easy to get use to.

This tintype was fun to make, it's an 8x10" plate of Emily's fiddle. Sense every aspect of the process is created by hand, every plate has its own characteristics. The dark areas on the right are from the developer not spreading over the plate all at once.

This is a tintype photograph using the photographic process from the 1860s using a 45 second exposure at ƒ5.6 with about 1.5 month old collodion.

I recently visited the George Eastman Museum, they had exhibits of the history of photography from before the brownie camera. It was really cool to see the equipment that was used then.
Currently my tintype setup is very modern, plastic developing trays, black metal camera.... I would love to slowly upgrade to authentic looking equipment. I have my eye out for an 8x10 wooden camera with a nice fast brass lens, maybe a petzval lens.
I photographed Britt last Saturday at a park, it was a beautiful day. Her hair looks awesome backlit by the sunlight. I used a reflector to light the right side of her face.

I had the opportunity to photograph Amy at a park recently with the tintype photographic process. I really like this portrait, she was a great model.
This was a 12 second exposure using the sun as a backlight and a reflector to light the left side of her face. (3.5 x 4.5 inch plate, collodion aged 1 week, 12 seconds, ƒ5.6)

This is the camera I use for tintypes and a shot of my darkroom. The camera is a modern 4x5 view camera with a “normal” 210mm ƒ5.6 lens. Because tintypes are direct positives, the camera must be at least as large as the print you want. This process is from long before enlargements were possible. The second shot shows some of the chemicals I use to make the photographs. These include the collodion base, a sensitiser, developer, fixer, and lots of distilled water. The development must be completed within 10 minutes of shooting the plate, and it must only be handled under red light.

This is a Tintype photograph of my friend Mason. It was in interesting shoot, it was near 90°F (32°C) and very humid outside in almost direct sunlight. Because of it being so hot, my test plate (used for determining the exposure) started to dry. I had to work extra fast to make sure the final print didn’t dry before I developed it.
I would have used a reflector to bounce some light under his hat but is was so bright it was hard not to squint already so I hoped for the best. His shirt was an almost black deep purple. I expected it to be lighter in the exposure but I wasn’t expecting almost white. That was a surprise.
This was a 6 second exposure with two month old collodion at ƒ5.6.
