Sonic Team is really bad at explaining Silver. Like, for the longest time it wasn't clear that he's still supposed to be the same Silver from Sonic 06. You wouldn't know that he's supposed to still have his 06 backstory but forgot the events of 06 unless you read a Sonic Channel story and Fast Friends Forever which came out all the way in 2021 and 2023. His time travel wasn't explained until Fast Friends Forever either. Silver's personality is so under-explained that a lot of people still swear he doesn't have one which isn't helped by how Sonic Team literally just say he's like Trunks internally even when he isn't like Trunks.

It's probably the biggest mistake Sonic Team made with him because Silver has only become more popular and well liked the more his character is explained. Compared to the 2000's and 2010's where he was the MOST hated Sonic character because nothing about him made sense.

Half of Sonic's main rivals are younger more extreme versions of him that are similar to the 90's American Sonic (Jet is the cockiness, Silver is the attitude and environmentalist themes, and Surge is the rebelliousness) while the other half are inversions of Sonic (Knuckles is the "mountain" and strength based to Sonic's "wind" and speed, Shadow is the dark polar opposite and Blaze is the order/photo negative Sol counterpart to Sonic)

Metal Sonic I think is a mix of the two. He wants to outdo Sonic and the superior version of him but also acts colder and more stern than Sonic.

Marine:

Blaze’s sidekick, talked about eloping with Silver in Otherworld Comedy (yes, seriously)

Semi-formed this team in Amy’s Fortune cards

Archie Marine made a Silvaze fanfic in an Off-Panel comic (weirdly Game Marine possibly ships herself with Silver in Otherworld Comedy)

The most popular third member with fans by far (personally Blaze and Marine are the Sol Sonic and Tails so they should have a Sol Knuckles instead of jamming in Silver IMO, and in the fandom this team either tries to make Blaze's cast into Silver's or Silver into part of Blaze's instead of giving him his own/doing anything with his world, I think fans underestimate how connected Silver is to the Future)

Fans usually assign Marine as the missing Power Type but Marine is either Speed (runs fast like Sonic in SRA) or Fly/Technique like Tails (No, her water powers don't make her a Power Type). If she was their third then Silver and Blaze would possibly be their Sonic Runners Types (below)

Rating: Possible, but tied to a lot of fandom headcanon things you shouldn't expect from the Sonic Team versions

Ariem:

Fits Team Dimensions’ theme by being from another different world

Acts as a calm counterbalance to how fiery and headstrong Silver and Blaze can be (which would let Blaze be fiery again instead of her just being the stoic one that has to calm down Silver)

Fits with Silver and Blaze's themes of guardianship and duty

Has a celestial Sun (Blaze), Moon (Ariem) and Star (Silver) theme with them

Fits Silver and Blaze’s dreamy blue and purple heavy color palette as a group

Potentially represents a positive version of Mephiles (otherworldly blue entity with stilt legs) and his affiliation with Silver and Blaze in 06

Rating: Likely given their current team name and how they're grouped together on Sonic Channel

Vector:

Has gold eyes like Silver and Blaze

Gives a chill and comedic counterbalance to Silver and Blaze being overly serious

Formed a team with them in Team Sonic Racing and some Mario & Sonic games but in those they didn’t want to be a team and were only together to pair spares (yes, they essentially say that in their Team Vector interview)

Rating: Probably not gonna happen again, Silver and Vector have a good dynamic though

Barry:

Roughly the same age as Silver and Blaze (referred to as the Microwave Kid)

Married Blaze and seems compatible enough with Silver so they could form a polycule (jk)

Would have the dynamic of being a normie character on a team with two of the least normal cast members

Would be the only one that can cook (Silver and Blaze can’t cook to save their lives)

Rating: Worth exploring but not likely to happen

Tikal:

14 years old like Silver and Blaze and has a similar power level to them (She has strength/shaman powers like Knuckles in the Sonic Adventure multiplayer modes so she could fit their missing Power Type)

Fits the fish out of water theme by being from the past while Silver is from the future and Blaze another dimension

Both were Silver and Blaze’s semi-third members in 06 (and Sonic Team loves calling back to 06)

Amy is close friends with both Silver and Blaze and strong enough to qualify for Power Type (Power Type is about physical strength and being able to move heavy objects in gameplay)

Mephiles is on the Future Team Type with ESP Silver in Sonic Runners implying they’re some kind of team (???)

Rating: Amy has her own team when she’s not the fourth member of Sonic’s and Mephiles is a god-demon thing that hates humanity so they aren’t real options

My opinion on “uwuing” Silver is that all Sonic characters are inherently cute, even the evil/ugly/gross ones like Mephiles, Clutch, Mimic, Rough and Tumble. They’re short little animal people with big anime eyes and that's inherently cute. Silver is explicitly a young, immature and naive character so he has his own “cute factor” on top of that. Where it becomes “uwuing” and bad is when you do these things that break and go against Silver's character:

Making Silver childish because he’s “young” (Silver explicitly is young and a little immature but that makes him juvenile not infantile. He’s not supposed to act below his age)

Making Silver excitable, round eyed and/or bubbly because he’s optimistic/positive (Silver CAN smile and have different expressions but he’s not Ray or Amy. Being positive doesn’t mean he’s happy-go-lucky)

Making Silver unathletic, frail, weak and/or clumsy because he’s psychic (This is just not true, literally every game he's in blatantly disproves that)

Giving Silver the wrong aspects of Trunks (Shy, polite/formal, looks up to older heroes. Trunks lowkey is a softboi and that’s where Silver gets that association from)

Making Silver a soft weenie to be the opposite of Shadow. (Silver IS the opposite of Shadow but not like that. Silver is brash and hot-headed while Shadow is formal and cool-headed). Silver is (still) from literal Hell on Earth worse than anything any other character had to deal with, he's not going to be a weenie.

Trying to say Silver’s aggressive traits aren’t real or he’s just pretending in any way. Silver is the most pure, honest and straightforward Sonic character. He's transparent, he can’t lie and he’s not pretending to be anything. (I think this one comes from people mainly viewing Silver as a generic teenager and anything else about him as secondary to that)

I like the take that half of Sonic's rivals are inversions of him(Knuckles is the strength to his speed, Shadow is said to be his dark polar opposite, Blaze is photo negative) while the other half are sort of younger, more amplified versions him. One half is more hot-headed and extroverted while the other half is more stoic and introverted too. Metal Sonic would go in the stoic half but he didn't fit. (I don't know why I chose the two paths meme for this)

Sonic Team is even worse at explaining things than I thought because when Ian Flynn asked what Silver’s future is like they literally just said “It’s like Trunks”. Silver’s future is NOTHING like Trunks, Trunks’ future is just a version of the Dragon Ball world terrorized by the Androids which wouldn’t apply to either version of Silver’s future but it’s inspired by Trunks so they just give the Trunks keyword.

So the problem is that Sonic Team only gives keywords and flowery language instead of properly or directly explaining things, especially with Silver. They only try to convey the themes of his character over his personality or how he works and that's why most people don't get him.

Apparently one of Sonic Team's goals with Silver in 06 was to give him a different impression from Shadow and they sadly mostly failed that since Silver has always been criticized for being "Shadow 2.0". I think that’s because Sonic Team never properly explains Silver or how he works. Most people can’t (accurately) tell you what his personality is in 06 or how he’s different from Sonic and Shadow and either think Silver is like Shadow or focus too much on him being young and treat him like a baby while ignoring anything else about him . With just how much of Silver’s character goes over most people’s heads and still isn’t widely understood I think it’s fair to say that 06 didn’t do a very good job of establishing his personality. (Silver’s personality traits are actually consistent between Sonic 06, the Rivals series and other games but the tonal differences make people swear he’s completely different between them which reinforces how not-established/explained Silver is beyond being young and positive.)

Silver isn't a Shadow copy or a big baby. He's a straightforward, honest, blunt, focused, hot-headed hedgehog with a punk personality that's also naive, kind and hopeful. Most of those are direct inversions of Shadow.

Sonic 06's ending is about everyone sacrificing their love for a world without Iblis and Mephiles. Sonic and Elise's maritime, Team Dark coming together and affirming their bonds, Silver and Blaze's friendship, the trials of love.

All of it is sacrificed. Sacrificed so Elise can have a past where she isn't bound to Iblis, so Shadow can have a future where he isn't sealed away by humanity and so Silver can have the peaceful world world he fought for his whole life. The game is about everyone's relationships being pushed to the limit, affirming their bonds and then sacrificing those affirmations for a better timeline.
