My year in books

My 2018 reading list

Well, I made it. I read exactly 33 books in 2018, just like 2017. 

Here’s my overview from Goodreads, let’s dig a bit deeper.

I went more heavily into reading sci-fi, especially stuff around singularity and posthumanity. I read quite a few things from Charles Stoss - but Accelerando stays up there in my all time favorites list. Two greats from this year were Greg Egan’s Diaspora and Permutation City.

The Age of Cryptocurrency gave a very nice historic overview of all things crypto. 

I recommend Daniel Pink’s Drive.

Siddharta was kind of a disappointment. I don’t see why it’s such a cult book. Sapiens was good, Homo Deus unfortunately didn’t add too much to it. Satya Nadella’s book was a PR piece, The Checklist Manifesto was a collection of anecdotes and the most important thing out of that book is - sometimes checklists are really important :)

The Coaching Habit was very useful, very practical and full of very implementable advice. I started re-reading it.

I set my 2019 challenge at 33 books again, and I do have plenty in my to-read list. I feel though that I’m beginning to focus more on podcasts recently. But that’s another post

in 2017 I read 33 books and abandoned 14. some of the ones that disappointed were:

Antifragile TED Talks: The Official TED Guide to Public Speaking Shoe Dog The Singularity is Near Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman!: Adventures of a Curious Character Radical Candor

some that stood out from the 33: Dawn of the New Everything: Encounters with Reality and Virtual Reality Life 3.0: Being Human in the Age of Artificial Intelligence Accelerando (yes, finally!) Snow Crash The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People (horrible title!)

i’m trying to read at least the same amount this year, and i’ll keep track in goodreads.
