“The LEGO Movie was my favorite movie of 2014, but it strikes me that the main character was male, because I feel like in our current culture, he HAD to be. The whole point of Emmett is that he’s the most boring average person in the world. It’s impossible to imagine a female character playing that role, because according to our pop culture, if she’s female she’s already SOMEthing, because she’s not male. The baseline is male. The average person is male. You can see this all over but it’s weirdly prevalent in children’s entertainment. Why are almost all of the muppets dudes, except for Miss Piggy, who’s a parody of femininity? Why do all of the Despicable Me minions, genderless blobs, have boy names? I love the story (which I read on Wikipedia) that when the director of The Brave Little Toaster cast a woman to play the toaster, one of the guys on the crew was so mad he stormed out of the room. Because he thought the toaster was a man. A TOASTER. The character is a toaster. I try to think about that when writing new characters— is there anything inherently gendered about what this character is doing? Or is it a toaster?”
— Bojack Horseman creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg commenting on how weird gendered defaults in entertainment are, and why we should think twice about them. Excerpted from this longer original post. (via 360degreesasthecrowflies)

Watching Olivia Wilde on Call Her Daddy, and if anyone wants to have flashbacks to that time when sensible women were pointing out that crazed obsessive fuckwitted fans were working as the handmaidens of the patriarchy, this is a fun hour of nodding your head in agreement.
Plus she talks at some length about how it feels to be at the centre of it all (with bonus stuff on the relationship with Harry) and also says she has to believe that Jason didn't choose the time and place of her being served those custody papers: that bit is very sad. It affected her a lot. I mean it enraged me but she says she's still having therapy about it.
For the record I think she is kinder than I am, because that shit was obviously an entitled man getting his own back. Fuck that guy. And fuck those horrific women who gulped down (then vomited out) the online slop they were being fed by his PR people.

this choice from hudson: “both in the book and in the scripts, shane isn't crying during the break up talk with rose but I wanted it when I read it. I just felt that's exactly what he'd be doing,” is so incredibly moving and indicative of his talent as a actor because it really conveys to the audience that this moment is not fully cathartic for shane. he’s still desperately trying to keep the tears at bay and restrict his emotions. he can’t verbally say yes or no to rose’s questions but it’s a small step in his journey to self acceptance.
