lamine was over, helping you pack your things so you could move in with him. and it was all going good, until lamine discovered your old childhood photos. more specifically, the extremely embarrassing ones.
you had been sitting on the floor of your living room helping your mom sort through old boxes while lamine sprawled across the couch behind you. originally he’d been scrolling on his phone and only half-paying attention to the conversation.
you nagged at him to help you pack, he groaned but listened, then he found the photo album and your entire day was ruined.
“absolutely not.” you said immediately, lunging for the album the second you noticed what he was holding. panic flashed across your face as you reached for it, but lamine was already standing.
“why are you dressed like a pirate?” he asked between laughs, holding the album above his head where you couldn’t reach it. his shoulders shook as he flipped to another page.
“lamine.” you said, while trying to tussle for it.
“no, wait,” he cackled, “there’s more.”
you buried your face in your hands and your mom was no help whatsoever.
“show him the princess phase.” she suggested.
“mom!” you groaned loudly, pushing lamine slightly, trying to get him unbalanced.
“or the horse phase.” she laughed.
lamine’s eyes widened dramatically as he turned another page, “there was a horse phase?”
for the next ten minutes lamine refused to stop looking. and him laughing at every photo somehow made things worse. there was one of you missing your front teeth, another where you’d attempted to cut your own bangs, and one where you were dressed as a tomato plant for a school play.
“i knew i called you tomato face for a reason.” he wheezed, doubling over as he pointed at the page. his curls falling into his eyes while he laughed.
“give it back, lamine.” you pouted, sitting on the ground in front of him.
“never.” he smiled, “these are too cute.”
“lamine.” you jumped up, trying to grab the album.
he immediately lifted it higher, you tried again only to get the same result. the fact that he was taller than you was becoming a serious issue.
eventually, your mom disappeared into the kitchen, leaving the two of you alone in the living room and unfortunately, lamine still had the album.
“okay, this one’s cute though.” he said suddenly.
you froze, it wasn’t the reaction you’d been expecting from any photos in the album. you carefully lowered your hands, you glanced toward the page he was looking at.
it was an old picture from when you were around seven years old. you were sitting on a swing with a huge grin on your face, your hair completely windblown and your knees covered in grass stains.
lamine’s smile softened, “you still make that face.”
your stomach immediately betrayed you.
“what face?” you said, and unbeknownst to you, you were making the exact same face.
“that one.” he said, looking up at you, his smile widening slightly. “the really happy one.”
you felt your chest warm, you were going to say something sincere, but then lamine ruined the moment.
“the tomato picture is still my favorite though.”
you threw a cushion at his head, which he barley dodged.
hours later the two of you ended up walking through the city together after finally escaping the photo album disaster. the streets were busy with people enjoying the warm evening, and the sky overhead was painted shades of orange and pink.
lamine had somehow managed to steal your sunglasses, which didn’t even fit his face.
“give them back.” you demanded, walking beside him.
he placed them on his face immediately. “they look better on me.”
you stared, “they don’t even fit you!”
he grinned, “it’s a trend to get things smaller than your actual size.”
you hated that the grin was kind of working, it always did, “they’re literally my sunglasses.”
“our sunglasses.” he winked, putting an arm around you.
“that’s not how ownership works.” you rolled your eyes, leaning into him, hoping he couldn’t t see your smile.
lamine laughed quietly before continuing down the sidewalk. every few steps he traced random shapes your shoulder.
eventually, you reached a small plaza overlooking the city. people sat around talking while there were other people selling things. the two of you found an empty bench and sat down, enjoying the cooler evening air.
lamine sat beside you with his arms folded across his chest while the sunset reflected in the windows of nearby buildings.
you sat in silence for a bit, unsure of what to say, “that was embarrassing.” you admitted.
“a little bit.” he laughed, taking off the sunglasses.
you only rolled your eyes at him, crossing your legs while bouncing one.
“you know,” he said quietly, leaning back against the bench. “your mom was right.”
you frowned slightly, “about what?”
his grin returned, “the princess phase was way worse than the tomato phase.”
you groaned loudly as he continued to laugh by himself, then placing his hand on your thigh. you rested your head on his shoulder.
“i love you my little tomato.” he whispered, rubbing circles on your thighs.
I see so many arguments over what is and isn't "good queer representation" that really just boil down to "y'all are actually arguing over matters of taste and genre preference, which is incredibly subjective and personal."
Worldbuilding where being queer is normalized and queerphobia has no impact on the plot? THAT'S FINE. Worldbuilding that includes queerphobia and tackles the effects of it as part of the story? THAT'S ALSO FINE.
Low-stakes queer romcom where the characters are fluffy and cute? THAT'S COOL. Messy queer drama with toxic people who fuck each other over and clash repeatedly? THAT'S ALSO COOL.
Stories that center the characters' queerness, show a trans character's transition, and are about the queerness as much as the rest of the plot? AWESOME. Stories where the characters' queerness isn't treated as a big deal, and have trans characters whose transition happened before the story entirely? ALSO AWESOME.
You may PREFER one thing or another, but it is actually good to have all these things. It's about variety. It's about queer characters being allowed to exist without censorship. It's about queer artists getting to make things without being told we're a "niche issue" or "adult content." It's about having as many goddamn cakes as the bakery can produce.
At the end of the day, I'd prefer a media landscape with fifty pieces of problematic queer representation over a media landscape with one single piece of queer representation that's trying (and usually failing) to be 100% perfect for everything and everyone.

♥️Between the two of you it’s most likely for him to confess before you do (unless you’re really impatient)
♥️When you were both in the crush stage he was really shy around you and sometimes couldn’t even make eye contact with you (Gavi and Pau relentlessly bullied him for this)
♥️He also wouldn’t talk to you much during the crush phase and even ignored you (not on purpose in fact he wasn’t ignoring you he just didn’t know what to say or do so acted like he didn’t hear or see you) poor Hector had to assure you that no, Lamine doesn’t hate you, he’s just an idiot (his words)
