She stayed outside the cabin for a second, catching her breath. When her heart started to calm down a little, she quickly and quietly made her way upstairs and into the bed. All of the exhaustion from running caught up to her and it was easy to drift off to sleep, pushing any thoughts of the girl to the back of her mind.
Briar didn’t even notice that the girl had stopped until she spoke.
“How long have you been there?” Her voice was hard, a lilt to it that made her sound a bit foreign. Briar contemplated the accent briefly before snapping out of her daze, realizing the stranger was glaring at her with purple glowing eyes. It made Briar feel guilty for watching the girl without her permission.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t-”
“Leave.”
Briar nodded her head vigorously, not wanting to disturb her any longer, and ran until she could see the cabin.

Briar ended up in a clearing where a girl- most likely a witch considering what she was singing- was dancing in the middle of a stone circle. She watched the girl, mesmerized, as she gracefully moved her body to the rhythm. Briar knew she should just leave so she wouldn’t interrupt the witch’s dance but she found herself planted in the one spot. Her voice surrounded Briar and she found that she couldn’t look away.
Briar stared up at the sky, watching the stars and moon as they traveled though the woods with her. Her mind started to calm and she felt as if she could turn back to the cabin and finally get some sleep when she heard singing. She stopped immediately and listen. Her curiosity piqued, she hesitantly followed the melodic voice.
Briar lied in bed for moment, listening to the seconds tick by on the clock until she couldn’t stand it any longer. She just needed to take a walk, tire herself out so that she would fall asleep the moment her head hit the pillow.
Briar stood up, quickly putting her shoes on. She crept down the stairs as quietly as she could. Briar stepped out into the hot humid summer air and started her trek through the forest.
Briar made her way down stairs and into the kitchen, sitting down at the worn wooden table.
“Morning, Sleeping Beauty.” Avery greeted, as she poured herself some coffee. Briar just groaned in response, still trying to wake up fully. She lied her head on down only to be scolded.
“Head off the table, Darlin’.”
“Sorry, Nana.” Briar apologized, rubbing her eyes.
“Breakfast is almost done.” Lorrie smiled as she shook her head, using her spatula to stir the eggs in the pan.
“Want some coffee, Bug?” Brair nodded her head and thanked her mother when she handed her a mug. She was more awake by the time Lorrie placed her plate in front of her.
“Hey, Mama,” she started, “Now that I’m “older”, can I go explore the woods? I won’t go out far! And I’ll take Teddy with me!”
Avery started at her for a moment, finishing her mouthful before answering, “Be back before noon okay, Bug?”
Briar smiled at her mother brightly, “Yes, ma’am!” She hurriedly finish her breakfast and rinsed off her plate, calling her dog over as she grabbed the leash off the table.
