The marquis and marquise de V-----, 1810
In 1809 the duchesse de C-------, by birth Princess Maria Anna of K-------- returned to her fatherland after the suspicious death of her husband in the turmoil that would soon turn into the T---ian revolution. Her arrival was soon followed by that of the Marquis de V-----, her late husband's brother, and, as it turned out, now his successor, the two having secretly married only 10 months after his death, not only without the permission, but even against the express proscription of the by now murdered king. The scandal of this marriage got them banned from attending court, though this was eventually lifted. In the meantime they became indespensable company to her mother at her dower seat Margarethenhof castle, to the immense satisfaction of the Marquise, who had always felt overshadowed by her more sensitive sisters in their mother's affection.
