what if as he gets older simon grows his hair out and stops shaving so often. he keeps seeing himself in the mirror and feeling like he's looking back on those early days of the post-mushroom-war, where he couldn't stop himself from becoming more and more reliant on the crown. what if he starts to see ice king in his appearance more and more as his hair loses pigment but his friends and loved ones tell him "simon, man, come on. you're beautiful. you're growing into yourself." what if he starts to see what they see instead. what if he gets to re-frame his appearance in a new light. what if he gets to look at himself the way the people who love him do.

Fionna holding a sandwich when she bumps into Flame Prince might be the most obscure joke in the whole of Adventure Time.

In the 2013 F&C comic series, Prince Gumball makes a new sword for Fionna.

The sword comes with three wishes, granted by pressing the buttons on the hilt. Fionna uses two of them but keeps one.

In the episode "The Limit" Jake uses his wish at the centre of the labyrinth to wish for a sandwich.

In "Jake the Dog", Jake almost uses his Time Room wish to get a sandwich, establishing the obscure running gag that if Jake is given access to wish magic he will inevitably wish for a sandwich.

In "Graybles 1000+", Jake uses the magic wand to wish for a sandwich.

In today's episode, Fionna is holding her sword with the unused wish when Betty's crown-wish removes magic from the world, and in the non-magic Fionna World, the sword has turned into a sandwich.

Today's episode implies that not only does Jake inevitably wish for a sandwich, but actually "sandwich" is the default result of an unused wish.

Understanding this joke/reveal requires you to be aware of a very obscure running gag that has only occurred like three times across six seasons of the show, and to have remembered an inconsequential detail from a 2013 comic book that was never brought up again, AND to even realise in the first place that the scene in today's episode was depicting the removal of magic from Fionna World, which I didn't at first.

I love this stupid show.

Simon is the best character in any show ever and all the reasons are in the new fionna and cake episode. He's fifty-something and says 'hey girl' to his transdimensional bestie, he's moved in with his vampire daughter but worries that her girlfriend still hates him for all the times he kidnapped her, and he leaves oranges at the grave of some goose he didn't really know because he killed it when it was evil. And he's doing okay, but he's still dealing with The Horrors (tm). I love you simon, we're so back

adventure time slang is weird cuz like. when you first watch the show and hear the slang you're like "oh this is cringy slang but its not like awful" but it gets to a point where the voice actors deliver the slang so naturally you don't even notice it and its just. part of the world's vernacular. I can't think of any other show that's done in-universe slang like this
