My name is Keila Chavez, I am 18 years old and Zeus is my sweet, 4 year old Boxer. Yesterday, I noticed that he began bleeding from his nose. I got scared and tried to clean him up with a napkin but I realized it was too much so I put him in the bath to wash him and thankfully, it stopped. It was one of the scariest things I’ve ever experienced, mostly because Zeus is my closest companion and just the thought that anything may be wrong with him makes my heart hurt. Today, we took him to the vet and found out that he has heartworms. They are already adults and are inside of his heart, unlike baby and teen heartworms that roam around the veins. Zeus has been breathing really fast and hard lately despite being indoors all day, only going outside to use the restroom. The doctor said that his heartbeat is heavy which explains and further proves the diagnoses. If left untreated, heartworm disease is fatal. The fast treatment costs a total of $600, $275 for the first visit and $325 for the second visit. However, this is not within my budget. I want so desperately to get his treatment started as soon as I can. Besides my mom, Zeus has helped me through my toughest days of battling depression and anxiety. I was diagnosed in October 2014 and, very fortunately, have progressively gotten better. Zeus is my best friend, my closest companion, my medicine that brightens my darkest days and so much more. When I look at him, I smile and am reminded of how much I love him and how grateful and lucky I am to have such a loving dog in my life. That is exactly what I want, to continue having him in my life for as long as it’s possible. Knowing that he has a heart disease brings me to tears and I know it does to him too because I see them in his eyes. Zeus does not deserve to live anymore days of pain or discomfort.
