commerce is the opiate of the people
The greatest threat to democracy - our boldest experiment - is not Trumpian idolatry and his blackshirt troll militia, not Putin’s spies, not even the mafiosa taking control of the internet - it’s corporatism. Only ignorance goes up against it as a serious contender for most venal and perfidious.
We have convinced our finest and brightest minds that the pursuit of money is a  valuable pursuit, that money is a useful measure. So they volunteer in droves to be put to work in corporate gulags analysing spreadsheets, learning to parrot incomprehensible gobbledegook, chasing self-serving targets, regurgitating turgid mission statements, and dreaming of one day flying the corporate VIP jet. They study, they pay, they pray.
All that valuable mind power, wasted. While innocents starve and refugees cry, while vapid politicians lie and dodge - playing some game only they find important, while the world waits and wonders. Many of our great minds are working new ways of flogging new and improved Gizmo X, so the company (their lord and liege) makes more money.
The Company is the earth and mother - it nurtures and suckles, and it punishes and chides. The Company is all. Nothing matters beyond its walls. It is a fortress against reality - it is stability and reliability, policy, and rules. And it looks nothing like the messy, incorrigible real world. Nothing.
The Company is a retreat from a confusing reality. In the Company, things make sense - even if they don’t, they will. The Great Leader will see to that. He, Almighty He, will work everything out and restore profitability. The minions pledge fealty to the great Company, all bow before it. It is more powerful than religion, more important than democracy. It is a beautiful screen that makes the world look good again - rational, reasonable, clear.Â
Commerce is the opiate of the people. It has killed religion stone dead.
the greatest disease on earth is ignorance
Government Is The People
This (luxury tax on female sanitary products) makes me think we have capitalism (and government) wrong. For essential goods like these - and water, power, garbage, internet - the taxpayer (through government) should provide a basic, good-enough product at no or (very) low cost. We’re paying for it anyway. The richies can spend their money on exclusive brands if they want but our government should provide basic services for all its constituents, and provide for the less well off.

Stories like this - and what’s happening in America - make me think the political class has become entrenched and sees itself as above the people, not from and for the people. Government is not like a corporation, a private company. Government is owned by and operated on behalf of the people for their sole benefit.
emotent
Neologism? The emotional moment, or the emotion of the moment. Especially in songwriting - the moment in time the songwriter feels and is trying to express and communicate - the peak emotion. A (for me at least) frustratingly hard thing to capture.
“Global warming” is just too damn pleasant
As a term, “global warming” sounds almost nice: Who wouldn’t want warmth, more sunshine, a permanent summer? Is at least part of the problem of people not believing - despite concrete scientific evidence - in Global Warming that it sounds so damn alright? Warm like a sunny tropical island - swaying palm trees, colorful birds tweeting, pink umbrellas in fancy drinks. Global warming may be a marketing/image problem: the term is too pleasant, too nice - so warm and cozy, like a popping fireplace in winter.
Compare it to other potential disasters we have mitigated - the Ozone Hole (aaarrggh!), Acid Rain (eeeek!), Nuclear Fallout (gasp!) They are much more emotionally immediate - more convincing. Global Warming sounds like an old sweater - comfortable and unintrusive, something to slip into on a nippy day.
Perhaps we need a more convincing term: Global Terror (oops - done), The Great Flood (hmm, also done), Storm Warning (I’ve got a song on that), Heat Apocalypse, Climate-astrophe (better but still abstract - what is climate?), the Rising Tide.Â
It’s hard to make climate sound menacing but maybe it’s time we gave it come teeth so more people take it seriously.

(Simon Jackson (APRA)) Remixed and mastered using LANDR while I should’ve been working. I’m so Lazy (hint!). This is my own actual photo. Snazzy, huh? I just about filled up my phone memory trying to get the damn lightning!
(Simon Jackson (APRA)) Remixed this and mastered using LANDR for a TAXI opp. Rejection pending...
(Simon Jackson (APRA)). I seem to like this song more than anyone else does. Maybe I’m just lazy!
