Nothing like a little string slap for a short, sharp lesson in proper archery form. 50 pounds is no fucking joke.
Homesick for Norway
So I’m posting some pictures I found on google images of Norwegian things.
Cabins used for short-term wilderness trips, called “hytte” (cognate of “hut”)
Galdhøpiggen, the highest mountain in Norway and indeed all of northern Europe.
The majestik møøse (Alces alces) (a møøse once bit my sister)
May 17th parade, commemorating the signing of our constitution at Eidsvoll in 1814.
Our traditional festive clothing, called bunad. Each region has their own bunad, and there are often variations within the region. These images are for my region, Trøndelag.
How we deal with snow. None of those dinky little F150s with a little scraper bolted onto the front that can barely handle a couple of inches, we’re serious about clearing that shit off the road.
Update: My partner J and I are moving to Norway, permanently, in a few weeks. I am excite.
@5triderofthenorth I bought a bow. 50 pound draw weight, 62″
Nice! That’ll be a fun one to shoot. Have a good time!
Thanks, I used to be pretty ok at archery 30 years ago, let’s see if I can get there again with a solid bow and some arrows that are honed to exactly the same weight and so on.
Trad archery is 95% arrow tuning, repeatable shot process, and the gray stuff between your ears.
The arrows want to fly, it’s the inconsistent monkey running the show that’s the hindrance. Which you already know. You got this.
Ook ook, brother. Got half of the arrows ground down to the length I want, going for 101mm (113 with the nock), only cracked one so far. Turns out my draw length is about 24 inches, so I also have some sawing to do on the other end, since I got 30″ arrows.
Not that I’m an expert qualified to teach on this subject, but maybe trim them longer you think you need to at first.
Easier for gap shooting if you’re not shooting instinctive style, and you can always take more off later. Can’t put it back on.
My .02 from having done it a handful of times. Good luck!
Turns out that was good advice, 25 inches is exactly right for my draw, the tip is an inch past the rest at that length, and my grouping at 10 meters hits around 15cm.
Nice shooting, man! I’m glad you’re enjoying getting back into archery. I’ve been shooting once a day in the side yard to tighten up my groups for the fall hunting seasons.
Even better: my youngest brother, who is a contractor, has said he wants us to try hand-making some recurves when we move to Norway. We’re moving to Norway October 18th this year, so 3 weeks at the time of writing this post.
Respect! I got to know @5triderofthenorth when I saw a post of his documenting how he hand-made a bow. I admire the hell out of people who are willing to “do these things not because they are easy but because they are hard.”
I don’t want to hijack your post here, @sincardinality, but I feel like I can share one invaluable tip for heat bending wood. One that I wish I’d known from the outset.
When bending in reflex or recurves, whether using dry heat or steam (some species of wood react better to one over the other), always line the belly of the bow with a strip of metal flashing.
I use a flimsy metal ruler from the dollar store. This conforms to the curve and prevents splinters from popping up, causing a break.
Then you won’t be ten hours into a bow build and hear the dreaded, gut wrenching, crackling sound.
Ask me how I know…
I don’t cuss and rant and throw things, but it’s been close a couple times.
And congrats on the big move, man! Hope it goes smoothly.
Oh, that does sound like useful advice. I’ve used tape when drilling wood for much the same reason, but I hadn’t thought of the metal trick.

Been watching a bunch of videos by bowyers, little did I know heat alone is apparently enough to bend a wood permanently. Makes sense, I would speculate that the heat is what makes the cellulose temporarily more ductile or something like that.

I’m loving everything about this thread: bro’s supporting bro’s, and the finer points of edged weapons.

Appreciate the advice, my friend. I’m just trimming the ass ends now to get them as consistent as possible, going to snip the arrows to probably 25-26 inches and see how they feel before I finalize the length.
With the help of one of my wives, I was able to determine that my draw length is 25″, so the arrows I have left are being snipped accordingly.
... and then this. I grind the shafts down to 330 grains, and ... the lengths are very dissimilar. Maybe I shouldn’t go with the cheapest possible arrows next time

I think @grubby-gerblin was right, there must’ve been some poison ivy around
Correction, @grubby-gerblin was definitely right, that was urushiol dermatitis.
reblog if the first musical you listened to was not Hamilton
for the love of fuck no
You guys know Broadway existed before Hamilton, right?
I think The Sound of Music was released a few year before Hamilton?
“bend over” “bend what? over”

I too hate this place. I’m never leaving. Never.
@5triderofthenorth 😂😂😂 Lookie!
Haha! Old blog sighting!👌
Wow, I didn’t even spot that! Damn, that thread’s been out there for eons, then!
Wait. Y’all wanna see something fucking WEIRD?? Click the link to @5triderofthenorth’s old blog. Just… give it a tap. Then come back and discuss.
I’ve had that pointed out to me before. If somebody more internet savvy than I could explain to me how that happened so quickly after that blog got shitcanned by Tumblr, that would be neat.

Gremlins.
How frustrating. I’m trying to sell my camera (Canon EOS Rebel T8i) but every single offer has involved the same “send a money request to verifymyscam at hotmail dot com, then send me shipping confirmation, and you’ll get your money”
Bullshit. You give me money, I give you thing. That’s how buying has worked since money was invented 5000 years ago.
